Loving Oneness Now
WHAT IS ABUNDANCE?
Over the last two decades there has been an explosion of books and articles on "How to Manifest Abundance in Your Life" and this has, at least, had the desirable effect of drawing attention to the fact that abundance is a God-given right.
AN ABUNDANCE OF WHAT?
This is the question that few ask because they automatically assume it is an abundance of all the kinds of things on this planet that money can buy, even though some people will also add in an abundance of loving relationships, especially in terms of a soul-mate or other loving companions. Actually, there is nothing "wrong" or "sinful" about money, the things it can buy, or having an abundance of loving relationships. It is rather our forgetting of the Source of Abundance and of giving acquisitive priority to material possessions and ego-relationships.
WHO, AND WHERE, IS THE SOURCE OF TRUE ABUNDANCE?
GOD is the only Source of True Abundance. True Abundance is the full Realization, inside One's Self, of Love, Light, Peace, Joy, Happiness, Freedom, Knowledge, Innocence, Imagination, Beauty and Universal Oneness.
We were once advised (by Jesus) not to store up treasures for ourselves on earth where moth and woodworm can destroy them and thieves can break in and steal. Rather, we would be wise to store up treasures for ourselves in Reality, where neither moth nor woodworm destroys them and thieves cannot break in and steal. For wherever our Real Treasure/ false treasure is, there will our Real Heart/ false heart be too.
DOES THIS MEAN THAT WE SHOULD ESCHEW THE THINGS OF THIS WORLD? IS ASCETICISM A VALID PATH HOME?
No. The Buddha established long ago that asceticism gets you nowhere, and to my knowledge no true Master has recommended it. Moderation is the key.
The problem connected with any preoccupation with acquiring and storing up the "treasures" of this physical world is only that we then tend to neglect any desire to Wake Up to Reality in the full Consciousness of God and once again enjoy being immersed in Love, Light, Peace, Joy, Happiness, Freedom, Knowledge, Imagination, Innocence, Beauty and Universal Oneness.
There is much confused thinking among many who practice and promote asceticism as a spiritual path that the denial and renunciation of earthly possessions and enjoyments is the same activity as embracing a Spiritual Life and engaging in Awakening to our Real Selves. But the denial of something acknowledges its Reality to the one who denies it, because one would never bother to deny a delusion for a lifetime. Some religious people even think that crucifying themselves by enduring suffering and pain is the key to their resurrection and ascension. On the basis of this naive philosophy they believe one can only get to Beauty through ugliness, to Health through ill-health, to Happiness through suffering, to Innocence through guilt, etcetera.
Although almost no one in the West practices asceticism, some of us have been traditionally indoctrinated to feel guilty about being well-to-do or successful. Therefore we keep ourselves in a continuous state of struggling to make ends meet so we can get through the eye of that proverbial needle and find ourselves in Heaven. The eye of a needle implies smallness and even insignificance but this attitude confuses ego-grandiosity and our Real Grandeur. Grandiosity is puffed-up ego, while Grandeur is an attribute of Who we Really Are as Children of God -- once we have dismantled our egos forever.
To resolve this dilemma we need only make Waking up to Heaven our primary intent, and then (second) "all else will be added unto us." That "all-else" is God's Abundance which is also our abundance. However, we must not fool ourselves by saying something like, "OK, I will seek to be Awake-in-God so that I can have success and abundance." That is truly putting the ego's cart before the Heavenly horse.
A key question we need to ask ourselves is, "What am I using my abundance for?" What is the purpose/ Purpose of this flower, this table, this hand, this pen, this car, this telephone. Are they being used for ego, or for giving and receiving Real Love?
WHY DOES GOD CONTINUOUSLY CREATE OUR UNIVERSE NOW?
Our infinitely Abundant Universe is continuously created within Absolute Mind-as-Such in the ever-present NOW for our enjoyment of eternal Life NOW. Our multi-level Universe is the "Mansion" of God which has many, many "areas" and "layers" in which His Created Beings can share His Abundance with Him and one another. The Earth is one of those areas, but in our separated egoic state we refuse to perceive it through eyes of Innocence. What we (as egos) see outside is a reflection of our inner insanity, and therefore the lion does not lie down with the lamb, and the disasters which regularly erupt on this planet actually mirror our primitive aggression. While we humans currently co-create this world with our superimposition on it of our warped delusions, callousness and greed, we could equally easily co-create it to be filled with Love, Light, Peace, Joy, Happiness, Freedom, Knowledge, Imagination, Innocence, Beauty and Universal Oneness.
BUT HOW COULD WE BRING ABOUT SUCH A PARADISE ON EARTH?
The Masters have been telling us how to do that for thousands of years but we seem to be both unbelievers of Truth and very slow learners, or rather, unlearners.
Here is a sampling of quotations and sayings which many of us steadfastly ignore:
Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. (Matt 5:44)
You must therefore be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matt 5:48)
You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbor as yourself. (Matt 22:37-39)
The Lord God abides in the hearts of all beings, Ajuna... Flee unto Him with all thy being, Ajuna. By His Grace shalt thou obtain supreme peace and eternal abode. (Krishna in The Bhagavad-Gita; Ajuna is his protégé)
Now this, O monks, is the noble way that leads to the cessation of pain; this is the noble Eightfold Path, namely, right viewpoints, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. (from: The Buddha's first sermon)
Every being in the universe is an expression of the Tao. It springs into existence, unconscious, perfect, free, takes on a physical body, lets circumstances complete it. That is why every being spontaneously honors the Tao. The Tao gives birth to all beings, nourishes them, maintains them, cares for them, protects them, takes them back into itself, creating without possessing, acting without expecting, guiding without interfering. That is why love of the Tao is in the very nature of things. (from the: Tao Te Ching by Lao-Tzu. Translation by Stephen Mitchell, 1988)
Be still and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10)
When the forgetful man gets up in the morning, he reflects on what he is going to do, whereas the sage sees what God is doing with him. (Verse 114 Sufi Book of Wisdom)
He who knows God contemplates Him in everything. He who is ignorant of God is absent from everything. He who loves God prefers nothing to Him. (Verse 163 Sufi Book of Wisdom)
[In the following ACIM Workbook quotations, the word "I" refers to each one of us humans personally.]
I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts: I am alone in nothing. Everything I think or say or do teaches all the universe. A Son of God cannot think or speak or act in vain. He cannot be alone in anything. It is therefore in my power to change every mind along with mine, for mine is the power of God.
I am determined to see (with Spiritual Vision): Recognizing the shared nature of my thoughts, I am determined to see (with Spiritual Vision). I would look upon the witnesses that show me the thinking of the world has been changed. I would behold the proof that what has been done through me has enabled Love to replace fear, laughter to replace tears, and abundance to replace loss. I would look upon the Real World, and let it teach me that my (Real) will and the Will of God are one.
I am determined to see things differently: What I see now (as an ego) are but signs of disease, disaster and death. This cannot be what God created for His beloved Son (each of us humans). The very fact that I see such things, is proof that I do not (yet) understand God. Therefore I also do not understand His Son (each of us humans). What I see tells me that I do not know Who I Am. I am determined to see (with Spiritual Vision) the witnesses (ACIM and all Masters) to the Truth in me, rather than those (witnesses to ego such as fear, disease, disaster and death) which show me an illusion of myself.
