Loving Oneness Now
gain: One of the major polarities the Course emphasizes is the ego's belief that one person's gain is another person's loss.
In this ego-world of scarcity we firmly believe that when we give or share anything
with another person, even willingly and happily, we have made a sacrifice while
the other individual or group has gained something. This belief holds even in
our special relationships in terms of exchanges of a variety of forms of ego
"love." These exchanges, in the ego's view, must exclude those
outside the relationship and be mutually reciprocated sooner or later by those
within the relationship "to be fair," otherwise the relationship turns
sour. We humans are also taught that success is the major goal of life
because happiness can only come from worldly gain, from the "good
life," from "having it all," i.e., plentiful gain, not
loss. But Jesus repeats a New Testament (Mark 8:36) saying in the Course: What
profiteth it a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?
(T-5.II.7:11) Earthly gain and success are founded on a fear of lack, a fear of
deprivation in a world of scarcity.
Throughout the Course we are asked to understand that only for-give-ness, giving and sharing can bring spiritual gain and release from fear of lack, whereas earthly gain is the acquisition of nothing. When we place the future in the Hands of God we have Everything as His gift. And it is the Will of God that His abiding Love be shared by everyone through each of us. Teach only Love for that is what you are, now.
game, games: The ego plays many games in order to
maintain its false identity and separation from God. Here are some of the games
we play, each of which is explored in the Course: (1) The game of children's
make-believe, i.e., this world of illusion. (2) The idle game of death. (3) The
game of guilt. (4) Unfairness. (5) Attack. (6) The game of fear. (7) Lost to
hope and abandoned. (8) Identity. (9) The game of sin. (10) Games to occupy our
time and keep sadness away.
But we can replace all these foolish ego games with joyous games such as (11) salvation and happiness. Even these happy games eventually give way to our Awakening to our rightful place at Home where all games are meaningless (12).
gap: The word "gap" is one of several synonyms for "separation" used in the Course. Others are "empty space," "kept apart" and "lack." The basic gap is between all Spirit and ego-mind and includes our separation from God. Neither the gap nor the ego-mind is Real. The Course mentions other gaps between ego and Spirit, namely, (a) perception and Knowledge, (b) past/future and the present moment, (c) ego and Self, (d) dreams/illusions and Reality, (e) brother and brother, (f) bodies and Mind, and (g) illusions and Truth. We fill these gaps with toys, trinkets, idols, dreams and a long list of empty forms none of which satisfies; they are literal stop-gaps. All gaps are eliminated by Wholeness, Oneness, miracles, forgiveness, Innocence, Peace and Love. In passing it is worth noting that these gaps between Spirit and ego (such as for example, Truth and illusions) are vertical dualities rather than horizontal ego-polarities.
garden of Eden: This word is used in several contexts, two of them
biblical. The Course tells us the Garden of Eden is a symbolic one for our
pre-separation condition which was a state of Mind in which nothing was needed;
we were fulfilled, complete and perfect within God's Mind-as-such, i.e., Heaven.
Adam, who symbolizes all of us in the process of separating, listened to
untruths about acquiring a false independence from God by usurping God's powers
(freely given us by God in our creation). These untruths, or false beliefs,
arose when we listened to our own inner impulse (symbolized by the
serpent) to split off from God and replace Heaven with our own Mind-made,
fear-based establishment. But the only way this could be achieved (and we do
have free will) was to detour into a deep sleep and dream unreal dreams
of misperception based on fear, not Love. Adam (all of us), the Course says, is
still asleep dreaming fearful dreams of emptiness, lack, imperfection,
self-changes, distortions, projections, nightmares and illusions, all of which
are lies. In Reality we are only fast asleep in the Mind of God Which we
have never left. When we wake up we will again experience Everything Real
and this is accomplished through our acceptance of the At-one-ment.
Jesus also discusses the crucifixion at length (see: chapter 6, section I) and refers to the so-called "agony in the garden." He points out that, although the disciples slept, he could not be angry with them because he knew he could not be abandoned. The garden referred to here is, of course, the Garden of Gethsemane. (Matthew 26:36)
"Garden" is also used in the Course as a symbol for our states of mind, both as ego and as right-minded.
are the gates to hell (one of our own making) and the gates of Heaven, and which
of these we enter is our decision. If we choose to believe in sin, guilt and
suffering, and to hold our brothers responsible for our "crucifixion"
by blaming them, we lock ourselves and others inside a hell made by our own egos.
Heaven's gate, however, is easily reached through forgiveness, miracles of love, holy vision, faith, and in knowing we still are as God created us. This gate of Heaven is opened from the inside as we reach it; opened wide by God Himself even though we had closed it ourselves with our beliefs in sin and fear. Inside Heaven's gate is the Peace of God and an eternity of Loving Oneness.
gaze: We need to keep our gaze fixed on the Light, the "summer sun," thus aligning our sight with Christ's vision, with the Holy Spirit's loving gaze, and with the Strength of God.
generosity: The term generosity has a special meaning in the Course. To teachers of God it means a giving away, without any fear, in order to keep. This applies especially to Love and all the other Real things that are of God. Note well that the Teacher of God is generous out of Self-interest, not ego-satisfaction. In other words, there comes a point of transition in our spiritual journey where we realize we can only progress further as a Christ-Self by giving and sharing Everything including our-Selves, and that is Love.
gentleness: Numerous uses of the words "gentle" and "gentleness" in the Course refer to the gentle ways in which the Holy Spirit helps us with our transition from fearful ego to Loving Oneness with all our brothers, from sleep to waking, from crucifixion to resurrection. We, too, must learn the ways of gentleness which stem, in essence, from forgiveness. Gentleness is a gracious relationship-contact term that aptly describes how we can relate to one another tenderly in untroubled ways. In chapter 4 of the Manual for Teachers, Jesus devotes a whole section (IV) to the need of God's teachers for the strength of gentleness. Joy is the inevitable result of gentleness because all fear has gone and with it, all pain and suffering disappears. Gentleness is eternal and is of God. Gentleness is Love in action.
genuine: Our forgiveness of ourselves, God and other Sons of God must be genuine in terms of Spirit. The Course states that, because we (as separated egos from God) believe that "sin" is real, we think forgiveness is merely a matter of overlooking a hurt or dereliction. In other words the sin truly happened and therefore our "pardon" of the guilty one is, at best, a condescending decision not to punish or "get back at" the one who actually hurt us. Even when we think we have "sinned" and yet do not punish (i.e., beat up on) ourselves we still feel the sin and guilt are real. But it is sin's unreality as a transitory illusion that makes genuine forgiveness natural and wholly sane. Sin is nothingness because true forgiveness is totally Loving and does not even register (perceive) any sin anywhere.
get, getting: The ego gives to get, but even this giving is only occasional; much of the time the ego demands in order to get, or even attacks in order to get what it wants. What, then, is the ego interested in getting? The ego wants false "love" in a thousand forms, such as for example, special love relationships, money, safety, fantasy, all addictions, adulation, success, entertainment, thrills, toys, trinkets, sympathetic attention, positive confirmation (I'm ok), fame, praise and pleasure. These are not evil or wrong, but they are pseudo-substitutes for the Peace and Love of God, and none of them are Real. In Fact they are nothing. The ego's pseudo-love getting system wants us to "buy into" them as authentic needs, wants and desires in order to divert our attention from Reality where eternal Love is, a Love intimately preferable to the hollow, temporary scrambling of the ego which always gives only to get. The ego and our attraction and interest in bodies has to be undone.
gifts of the ego are valueless and false, as are the gifts of this world. These
gifts include death, insanity, special relationships, suffering and sacrifice.
In contrast the gifts of God are eternal and cannot be withdrawn. The gifts of God include Peace, Joy, Happiness, Love, Strength and Grace. In Fact we were all given Everything by God when we were created. This includes all our brothers, all of whom are Sons of God.
God also gives each of us special gifts that we can use to help ourselves and others in the At-one-ment process of healing the separation. These special gifts may be talents, skills or special characteristics.
We can also give gifts to God and to one another and these are mentioned in the entry under "giving."
Finally, we must understand God gave all of Himself to us in our creation and this gift of Himself is eternal.
To the ego, giving anything away means that it is lost to the giver.
Such a loss is usually seen as a sacrifice or duty; often the giver expects a
reciprocal gift in the future so that the "balance" is re-established.
The fear of a withdrawal of the recipient's affection frequently motivates the
ego's giving even when, superficially, the gift is given with pleasure. Thus
almost always, the ego's giving is "giving to get." The ego also
"gives away" those things it does not want in a vain effort to
get rid of them. This "giving," which is actually projection, is most
often attempted in situations of conflict and blame. The ego tries to get rid of
the problem by projecting it onto other minds, but this method is never
successful because the projected conflict never leaves the mind of the
Love, Light, Peace and Joy, likewise, do not leave the Mind of the giver (be it God, the Holy Spirit or one's Self) when they are given away. Rather, are these gifts increased in the Minds of giver and receiver.
glad: Whereas joy is more
of an inner welling up of spontaneous happy feelings, gladness is usually
associated with a situation or condition. The Course tells us we can be glad about
healing, awakening, guiltlessness, inner glory, grace, happiness and peace.
We are also told we can be glad that all that is not Real (i.e., illusions, ego, this world, bodies, imagination, sins, sorrow, lies, hell, sacrifice, the past, sickness, dreams, littleness, special relationships, crucifixion, pain and misery) is all undone.
Finally, the acceptance of the At-one-ment for oneself is the end of dreams of misery and the glad awareness of the gifts of God.
glimmering: This word is included here because it is part of a key quotation about the Love of God. In our separated state we do not seem to have the faintest glimmering of what Love means, but if we do free our minds from the beliefs and laws of the ego and this unreal world, then we may get some glimmering of the magnitude of God's limitless Love.
glory, glorious: We are glorious creations of a glorious Father. God's power and glory are in us because we are united with Him in His Kingdom, the Kingdom of His Mind-as-such. We are Christs, Sons of God, who live in our Creator eternally. We extend His Love and Light radiantly in the Glorious Oneness That is God.
goals: The ego's goal is your destruction, but the goal of Spirit is holiness. Destructive unholy relationships can be offered to the Holy Spirit and turned into holy relationships. The shift from the ego's unholiness to Spirit's holiness is a vertical one (see: dual). The goal of a holy relationship with all our brothers is not only a goal unchanged throughout eternity but also the goal of resting totally in God. On behalf of the ego, the laws of chaos serve the goals of madness, illusions, attack, hatred and murder. All this is unreal ego-nonsense. We can let it go and, in innocence, lead one another to our Father's House, because this is our only goal.
God: It is important to distinguish between our
illusory ego-generated ideas about God and the Real Attributes of God as
presented in the Course. All the ego's ideas about God are misleading, and so
our best plan is to discard all we ever learned about God and begin anew,
The sequence of "What and Who God is," set out here roughly follows the sequence of ideas and revelations about God given in the Workbook lessons even though many of the statements and quotations come from other parts of the Course. While reading this material it is crucial to keep in mind two key provisos. The first is that God is indefinable in the ultimate sense, and while Jesus' descriptions are accurate they are very incomplete because they are only designed to help us separated ones get some inkling of God in order to Wake us up. The second proviso is that we must realize all descriptions of God are but hollow echoes when compared with the direct experience of God once we do Wake up in Him. While descriptions and the At-one-ment process may help lead us to God they can never substitute for our spiritual experience of God.
God is Mind-as-such: In the Absolute sense of Being, God is Pure, Self-existent, Mind-as-such. Mind-as-such should not be confused with the Ideational content, thinking processes and programs it utilizes (e.g., Reasoning), or the Thoughts (e.g., Love, Will, Revelation) it generates.
God is Strength: Although the word "strength" is not capitalized in the Course some key references to it state clearly that Strength is an attribute of God.
God is the Source: Because we continuously think with His Mind, God is our Source, our Mainspring, our ceaseless Sustainer within Whom we Live. This is true even though we are free to do and think what we like (and even to dream of separation) as Minds within God's Mind.
God is the Light: The Light of God is not physical light because physical light comes in many changing forms and wavelengths and God knows not form (see: T-30.III.4:5). Physical light can, however, be a symbol of God's Light.
What, then, is Real Light? God's Light is the Radiance of His Mind-as-such, the Mind He shares with all his Created Children. God's pure Mind-as-such radiates (communicates brilliantly and perfectly) Knowledge, Understanding, Truth, Reason, Strength, Joy, Love and Tranquility. Light and Life are different aspects of Creation but both are infinite.
God is Love: We were created as Mind-Beings by God in God and that Creation included His Love. In other words we were created by Love like Itself and that Love is maximal. Our minds are encapsulated in God's Love within God's Mind. Note that maximal infinite Love is God's only emotion.
God is Life: God is the Giver of all Life and Life is an eternal attribute of all He created. Anything that is not eternal (i.e., forms) is not Life. There is no Life outside God because God is Life. When we experience direct continuous inner communication with God we are the way, the truth and the life.
God is Cause: God is the only Cause, and we as Minds within His Mind-as-such are His Effects, His Creations, His Sons, "maintained by" His Thoughts. God, as the First Cause, gave all His Sons the power to Create like Him, but we, even as Christs, are still not Cause-as-such because we are only creating Minds of God's Mind within His Mind, which are then kept intact eternally by God's Own Thought because His Thought is Life.
God is Reality: The Reality of God is formless and changeless because that Reality is only the eternal Mind-as-such of God and His perfect Thoughts. Our Minds-as-such live in God's Mind and our Thoughts are Real only when they are identical to God's Thoughts.
God is One, Oneness, Unity, Wholeness: All Mind-Beings share in the One Mind-as-such of God Whose limitless, formless Mind is the only Reality. We need to understand that it is the Mind-as-such of God that is One, and that God's Thoughts which occur in that One Mind are also an eternal Unified changeless Whole, whether those Thoughts are (a) Created Mind-Beings, i.e., Sons, or (b) Thoughts of Love, Reason, Will, etc.
God is Extension: God's extension occurs within His Mind-as-such only, outside of which is nothing. Within His Mind God extends Himself by "encapsulating" "pieces" or "parts" of His Mind with Love and giving them an individualized Mind-Identity as Sons (i.e., Mind-Beings like God). This extension of God by God within Himself as Mind has created the whole Sonship, each of whom (as a Son) has the God-given power of creative extension when in the Christ state-of-Mind.
God is the Prime Creator: God is not only the Prime (Original) Creator, but also the only "Thing-Being" that Exists, outside of Whose Mind-as-such there is no-thing, and "no-thing" does not mean a vacuum. There is only God's Mind-as-such which His Sons share by His inner extension. When an agnostic asks, "Who Created God?" the agnostic is assuming that time, space, Mind-as-such and creation itself can all exist as ideas or potentials outside the Mind-as-such of God; on the contrary God is First, Prime, Absolute, Original, Singular, and He contains All that is Real within Himself.
God is Peace, Stillness and Serenity: Because God is Perfect and His Sons are Perfect, He has no needs or wants because these would imply imperfection. God's Perfection and Changelessness mean He is completely Still and at Peace eternally. This Perfect Peace is also our spiritual goal while we exist as egos in a dreamworld of restless change, fear and meaningless "getting."
God is Perfection: It seems almost unnecessary to comment on this obvious attribute of God but all too often we do not realize the implications of God's Perfect Creations, namely our-Selves. If God created us perfect then we must still be perfect and therefore our egos and dreamworld are not Real and do not even exist.
God is Happiness and Joy: Happiness is the resulting state of mind that arises spontaneously when Love (as an active verb) is in operation. Therefore God being Love and Loving is also Happiness, a state He shares with us. Joy is a synonym for Happiness.
God is Knowledge and Truth: Knowledge as used in the Course comprises Everything God Knows, and only what God Knows. God's Sons share his complete Knowledge but this perfect Knowledge is not accessible to the separated ones because we have temporarily forgotten Knowledge and replaced it with perception and illusions. When we transcend the separation and wake up we will again discover God's True Knowledge.
God is Power: God is the only Power and all Power is of God. In this context His Power includes Vitality, Strength, Love, Capability, Knowledge, Authority, Creativity and Omnipotence. We, as separated egos, have a very warped and insane interpretation of these Attributes of God because we project onto them our human parental authority system with its fictitious ego-polarities of good and evil, dominance and subservience, affection and anger, and praise and punishment. We have imagined, in our separated state, that we have usurped the Power of God and feel fear and guilt about this act, even expecting punishment for it. Of course, we cannot usurp God's Power, and, moreover, we do not have to, because He has freely given us all His Power and other Attributes when He created us as His unlimited Sons.
gods: We are asked in the Course (and the Bible) to have no other gods before God, i.e., in place of Him. In our separated state we worship many other gods, some of which are called idols, toys and laws. The major gods we worship here in this world are fear, cruelty, vengeance, death, sickness, special relationships and bodies. Even routines and rituals can become gods. We also worship "thousands of idols," and certainly we prize all the toys and trinkets we have collectively made in this world. But there are still more gods; we believe faithfully in all the magical laws we have invented here, laws of medicine, economics, nutrition, health, friendship and even some aspects of "religion." There are, however, no laws but God's. The key word in this paragraph is "worship."
God's Answer: God's Answer to the separation is
singular ("let thine eye -- spiritual vision -- be single") but it does have three facets, namely, the Holy Spirit, the Atonement
and Loving Oneness.
The Holy Spirit is the communication system God immediately organized, or rather adapted, which would enable God and His separated children to communicate if the children wished to do so. For the most part the Holy Spirit operates through those Mind-Beings in the Sonship who never separated (e.g., angels) or through those Sons who have re-awakened to the Experience of God (e.g., the Christs). Jesus, of course, is one of the latter.
The Atonement is the psychospiritual process or means we separated ones must utilize in order to undo the unreal separation and all its concomitants such as bodies, egos, fear, death, attack, etc. The principle of the Atonement is Love, which is of God.
Loving Oneness is the goal, the end, the state of Reality we seek because God is Love and God is One. This Loving Oneness is the Answer because we are a part of the Mind of God Which is One.
God's Guarantee: The following quotation speaks
for itself without any elaboration here other than to say it is well worth
memorizing so we come to understand the outcome of accepting God's Plan (the
Atonement) with the clear intention of fulfilling it. (See: God's
In contrast, all the ego can suggest is, (a) that if we don't do certain things it will reward us by keeping us safe, or (b) if we do what it orders we will be rewarded with security and pleasures. But, then, the ego is the ultimate unreliable trickster which will often break its promises and switch tactics unpredictability. The ego can guarantee nothing.
Once you accept His plan as the one function that you would fulfill, there will be nothing else the Holy Spirit will not arrange for you without your effort. He will go before you making straight your path, and leaving in your way no stones to trip on, and no obstacles to bar your way. Nothing you need will be denied you. Not one seeming difficulty but will melt away before you reach it. You need take thought for nothing, careless of everything except the only purpose that you would fulfill. As that was given you, so will its fulfillment be. God's guarantee will hold against all obstacles, for it rests on certainty and not contingency. It rests on you. And what can be more certain than a Son of God? (T-20.IV.8:4-12)
God's Laws: God's Laws are eternal, universal and
immutable but they can be "violated" by our egos, and they may even be
misapplied and misused by us in this world of unreality. God gave us the Freedom
to imagine whatever we wish with respect to unreality. In fact our total Freedom
is one of God's Laws.
But the most fundamental of all God's Laws is the basic Law of Cause and Effect. This Law states that what you desire (want) you will see and have. If we want happiness and peace we will have them but only if they are all we want. A corollary of this Law is that what would have effects through you must also have effects on you. It is this law which will ultimately save us when we extend only Love.
The Law of Creation by Extension is also a fundamental Law of the mind. Mind-Beings, including God Himself, create other Mind-Beings by extending their Minds-as-such internally. An existing Mind, then, can create another Being by encapsulating "pieces" of itself in a Thought of Love and then giving the encapsulated Mind a Life, an Identity, a Being of its own. All these created Minds, though, exist within the Universal Limitless Mind of God and have perfect freedom there, including the freedom to create. (See: create, extension)
The Law of the Kingdom is the extension of Truth, and this law rests only on the certain Knowledge of what Truth is. There is no confusion about Truth in the Kingdom because there is only one meaning and this meaning comes from God and is God.
There is another law associated with extension. It is the law of the Mind which states that without extension there can be no Love. This is the Law of extension by Love and it is by this law we create and were created. In other words creation by extension must always be charged with Love, and vice versa, i.e., Love calls for creation through extension.
Another way of looking at the Law of Creative Extension through Love is to think of it as a Law of Sharing. This is how the Holy Spirit conceptualizes it for us, to help with our understanding of it. To the ego, however, sharing is deprivation because the giver has less.
Understanding Wholeness (Loving Oneness of God's Mind) is essential to our experience of Peace. When we in our world of separation cut off a brother through attack and hate we darken our own minds and so lose the Peace and Light of Wholeness. Only by Loving our brothers as our Selves can we return to God's Wholeness, Peace and Love. This is a Law of God for the protection of the Wholeness, the Loving Oneness of all Creation.
Miracles of healing, which always stem from Love, see no specialness at all and this is the Law of Love the miracle obeys. Love, the Course tells us, is a law without an opposite.
When we give through Love we shall be given everything because this is a Law of God. It is true for each of us as teachers and healers.
The Laws of Happiness were created for us by God because Real Happiness and Joy stem from the Law of Love. The Holy Instant is a perfect example of Completion and Love because in it the Laws of God prevail and they are the Law of Love.
How then, do these Laws of God affect us in this world of unreality? First of all, they protect us and in them lies our safety. God's Laws will keep our minds at peace. His Laws govern us because they govern Everything. Equality is an essential aspect of the applicability of God's Laws, and we must strive to abide by this in our own Loving of everyone. We can never suffer loss under the laws of God. Finally we need to understand fully there are no laws except the Laws of God. We need only Love Everyone.
God's Plan: God's Plan for us is quite clear and
very simple. Through the At-one-ment process we will undo the separation and
re-unite with Him and the whole Sonship in Loving Oneness. The key ingredient in
the At-one-ment process is learning forgiveness. Through forgiveness we
rediscover our inherent, but forgotten, function of Loving all Beings, all
God's Children, everywhere, just as God does.
Only God's Plan for our salvation will work and only it will succeed. The ego's plans, being erroneous, will always fail. Each of us has an essential part to play in the fulfillment of God's Plan, and the people in our lives have been sent to us to fulfill our part in God's Plan. We have to be willing to accept God's Plan because we are forever free to choose the path we wish to take.
God's Promises: The Course mentions several promises made to us by God. However, unlike the ego's promises, God's merely reaffirm our creation as His Sons and that it is His Will we return to Him as "One Son" bringing all our brothers with us. These, then, are God's Promises:
1. There is no real gap between God and his separated Sons. We are One in God's Wholeness.
2. We are immortal.
3. We are forever safe in God.
4. We have life in God as a part of Him, and life in God is the only life there is.
5. Salvation, redemption, the return Home are all promises of God.
6. Our sinlessness as God's Sons is eternally true.
7. God has promised that the truth that we are as He created us will be revealed to everyone who asks for it.
8. God has promised He will take the final step in the Atonement process Himself, and He will reveal Himself to us.
9. God has promised to send His Spirit into any holy relationship.
10. God promises us peace, resurrection, and rebirth as Christs.
11. Finally, God keeps His Promises and His Promises are sure.
God's Will: Because we have separated from God
our so-called "will" or "will power" is defined in terms of
ego-weakness or ego-strength. The degree of will power we have is actually a
resultant effort emerging from a conglomeration of conflicting ego needs,
beliefs, wants and desires. The more inner conflict and confusion there is, the
more indecisive we are. Only by systematically relinquishing all our ego
beliefs, needs, wants and desires to the Holy Spirit can we attain a
single-minded, lucid, spiritual state and align our wills with God's Will. It is
not necessary to use "force" in this At-one-ment process because force
is of the ego. But it is necessary to want re-unification with God and to
be will-ing to hand all that is not real over to the Holy Spirit. Thus it is our
intent that is all-important; it is our intent to return Home
which is our will when it is aligned with God's Will. God wills
that all His Sons wake up in His Mind, His Reality, and that they do this of
their own free will, not by coercion, but only through Love.
The Course contains many references to God's Will and what follows here is a summary.
1. All real pleasure comes from doing God's Will.
2. There is no strain in doing God's Will.
3. The Holy Spirit is the way in which God's Will is done on earth, in us and through us.
4. God's Will is unchangeable, and Creation is His Will.
5. Truth is God's Will and we can share what He Knows.
6. God Wills, He does not wish, and our wills are as powerful as God's because our Real Wills are His.
7. We are God's Will, but if we do not accept His Will we are denying our Joy.
8. God never coerces us because He shares His Will with us. Moreover our will and God's are one, and this is the undoing of everything the ego tries to teach.
9. God's Sons are all equal in will, all being the Will of their Father.
10. God's Will is Thought and it cannot be contradicted by Thought. Ego does not Think.
11. There is no difference between our true will as Sons of God and God's Will. We and God can only truly communicate through both Creation and Love, because Extension of the Kingdom is our Joint Will.
12. God's Will is our salvation, and He has given us the means to find it by Loving all our brothers, now.
13. God wills us perfect Happiness with our brothers through the At-one-ment.
14. To give Love without limit is God's Will for us because only this can bring us God's Joy which He Wills to share with us. Our Real Love is God's Love.
15. It is God's Will that we unite in Love with all our brothers everywhere in Loving Oneness as One Son.
16. It is God's Will that no pain or harm touch us as His Sons, and nothing but God can ever embrace us as the Sonship because God loves his Sons forever.
17. God's Will is done. We will find Peace because God does not change His Mind. We experience only change and shift in our dream world here, but when we Wake-up in Heaven the unreal world of contrast and differences will disappear. However, we are free to dream delusions if we wish.
18. While Holy Relationships with our brothers share God's Will for us as His Sons, special relationships (of "love" and hate) we have made are but sorry substitutes for God's Will of Loving Oneness (for everyone to share).
19. God's Will is unlimited in its Power and therefore if we are truly willing to experience a Holy Instant of Love and Light with Him, even a little willingness on our part is sufficient. God will do the rest. We do not need arrogant preparations to experience a Holy Instant.
20. In our separated state we still tend to oppose the Will of God by just a little, and we have the freedom to do that because God never coerces (see #8 above). He never limits His Children, nor controls them. Yet God's Will is One, not many, therefore any opposition on our part (as egos) is an illusion, a fictitious wall of shadows. Opposition to God is only a tightly-organized, delusional system.
21. The Course continues this theme (in T-21.II.6) by describing the ego as our replacement, our substitute for our Will as Sons of God, in our mad revolt against God and God's Will for us.
22. But our Wills are as powerful as God's Will and that power is not lost in our illusions. God gave us our Will and we can exercise it to delude ourselves that we live as egos and bodies in a world of separation and illusion. Every thought we have contributes to truth or illusion, and it is our thoughts which have given rise to the perception of this whole world of unreality, one we make.
23. God has no secrets and nothing can be secret from His Will. Our so-called "secret sins" are only mistakes which can be corrected easily if we acknowledge them as our own and give them to the Holy Spirit to dissolve.
24. God's Will is for Life, not death. God did not make our changing, dismal world; we did.
25. Only God's Will is immutable, and nothing is immutable besides His Will. If we could only realize that nothing is changeless but the Will of God, our At-one-ment process of waking up would not be difficult for us.
26. Only God's Love is dependable and it is God's Will that we remember that Fact and wake up to perfect Joy.
27. The ego, as a worshipper of idols, always wants more of something; more beauty, more intelligence, more wealth, or even more affliction and pain. An idol, to the ego, is a means for getting more, and it is this that is against God's Will. God has not many sons, only One, therefore who can have more and who can be given less? There is only peace in Heaven where idols are unknown and all share equally in Abundance.
28. Our Will to be Complete and One with God is God's Will and this Completion is given us because we are His. God knows not form and therefore He cannot give us the idols we ask for, no matter what their form takes in our world of separation and illusion.
29. We need to assert our wills to behold the Light (instead of the ego's darkness) by joining our wills with God's Will and uniting with our Selves. They will lead the way.
30. God is the only Will and when we have recognized this Fact, our wills are His Will and Peace has replaced all conflict.
31. God's Will for us is perfect Happiness. Why would we choose to go against His Will?
32. God's Will does not oppose us, or anything we do in our separated state of insanity because we are free Beings to whom He gave the Holy Spirit as His Answer to the separation.
33. Within us all is Eternal Innocence, because it is God's Will that it is there forever. As His Sons, our will is as limitless as God's Will, but if we deny His Will we deny our own. We can re-discover our Real Wills within ourselves when we find the memory of God inside our own Minds.
34. When we have forgiven everyone truly, and Love everyone to the maximum as God does, we will then discover His Will is One, a Will which we all share. This is the way to Peace. There is no will except God's Will of Love.
God's Word: This phrase is used in four closely related
contexts. These are, (a) God Himself as the original Source of the Word or Words
or Thoughts, (b) the Holy Spirit who is the Voice for God, (c) the Truth, which
is often a synonym for the Word of God, and (d) the Course itself which comes
Most of the following quotations, however, have been selected for their emphasis on how we, as students of the Course, can receive God's Words, understand God's Words, and experience spiritual healing through them, especially in terms of miracles and by listening. These quotations need no further elaboration here because they are from the Workbook and Manual for Teachers and make direct simple statements to us as students.
God's Actual Words: The Course contains approximately twelve quotations which are actual Statements by God Himself. These Words of God which are quoted below stand in their own right as Truth. Note that most of these quotations strongly emphasize our Unified Identity as One Son of God in Him.
When God said, "Let there be light," there was light. (T-9.V.6:2)
Such is the promise of the living God; His Son have life and every living thing be part of him, and nothing else have life. (T-29.II.6:1)
God speaks for you in answering your question [Who walks with me?] with these words: I walk with God in perfect holiness. I light the world, I light my mind and all the minds which God created one with me. (W-pI.156.8:4-6)
For God Himself has said, "Your will be done." And it is done to you accordingly. (T-31.VI.4:7-8)
Can you to whom God says, "Release My Son!" be tempted not to listen, when you learn that it is you for whom He asks release? (T-31.VII.15:5)
I am as God created me. This single thought, held firmly in the mind, would save the world. From time to time we will repeat it, as we reach another stage in learning. It will mean far more to you as you advance. These words are sacred, for they are the words God gave in answer to the world you made. By them it disappears, and all things seen within its misty clouds and vaporous illusions vanish as these words are spoken. For they come from God. (W-pI.162.Heading) & (W-pI.162.1:all)
What is the Word of God? "My Son is pure and holy as Myself." And thus did God become the Father of the Son He loves, for thus was he created. (W-pI.276.1:1-2)
We come in honesty to God and say we did not understand, and ask Him to help us to learn His lessons, through the Voice of His Own Teacher. Would He hurt His Son? Or would He rush to answer him, and say, "This is My Son, and all I have is his"? Be certain He will answer thus, for these are His Own Words to you. And more than that can no one ever have, for in these Words is all there is, and all that there will be throughout all time and in eternity. (W-pII.FL.6:all)
"This is my beloved Son, created perfect and forever so." (M-22.7:10)
In his [all of us as God's Sons] creation did his Father say, "You are beloved of Me and I of you forever. Be you perfect as Myself, for you can never be apart from Me." His Son remembers not that he replied "I will," though in that promise he was born. (T-28.VI.6:4-6)
This is God's Final Judgment: "You are still My holy Son, forever innocent, forever loving and forever loved, as limitless as your Creator, and completely changeless and forever pure. Therefore awaken and return to Me. I am your Father and you are My Son." (Commentary 10 on "What is the Last Judgment?" W-pII.10.5:all)
Time pauses as eternity comes near, and silence lies across the world that everyone may hear this Judgment [from God] of the Son of God: Holy are you, eternal, free and whole, at peace forever in the Heart of God. Where is the world, and where is sorrow now? (M-15.1:10-12)
Golden Rule: Jesus quotes his own "Golden Rule" (from Matthew 7:12) in the Course and uses it to affirm another complementary theme from the New Testament, namely, that the ego's perceptions, projections and beliefs are the origins of external behaviors. Therefore while the behaviors themselves may be inappropriate, it is the inner misperceptions, distorted beliefs and erroneous projections that call for correction through miracles and the At-one-ment process. Note that the use of the word "do" in the following passages indicates active behaviors, while "perceive" and "perception" refer to the inner contents of the ego. Note, also, that we, in our ego-state, do not initiate miracles except inasmuch as we have an extensive need for them and ask for them. Miracles may be safely left in the hands of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, Who in their Wisdom, know exactly where miracles may be bestowed.
good and evil: This topic has been included here because it emphasizes the deep and widespread ego-polarity of human moral and ethical beliefs, ever since we alienated ourselves in a wrong-minded separation from God, into a world of dreaming and non-stop judgment. Our religions, our myths, our histories, our laws, our legal systems, our schools, our politics, our armies, our families and our many relationships all reflect this entrenched horizontal conviction that "good" and "evil" are not only very real, but that "good" must fight and conquer "evil" (often personified). "God" is also roped into this battle invariably on the side of the "good guys," i.e., our group.
It is advisable here to recall that Socrates said: All goodness is Knowledge; all evil is ignorance. Jesus said much the same thing about those crucifying him when he was on the cross; Forgive them Father for they know not what they do. Jesus did NOT say, "They are a bunch of evil men who will roast in hell for eternity." Consequently, if so-called "evil" is an ignorance of God's Knowledge then surely we should all be endeavoring to supply that Knowledge to the human race in order to Wake us all up!
Unfortunately, the word "good" is often also used (ambiguously) to refer to a vertical duality, in which case, strictly speaking, it has no opposite because all the lower ego-level is imaginary and mythical. This clarification of the confusion of horizontal and vertical levels is illustrated below. Note that at the God-level of Reality "Goodness" has been capitalized here to distinguish it from the ego-level polarity of "good and evil."

The Course sometimes uses the term "One-mindedness" to indicate the vertical duality of Reality in comparison with illusion (or nothingness, or dreaming). But mostly, in the Course, the student has to rely on the context of any given passage (using the word "good") to work out whether a horizontal, ego-level, polarity meaning, or a Spiritual-level, vertical duality meaning is being referred to. (See also: dual)
good, goodness: Please read the above entry on good
and evil (bad) before reading this one.
Often, in the Course, the word "good" is used as a common adjective (e.g., good advice, good efforts, good things) and this usage need not be considered here. Sometimes in the Course the words "good," "bad," and "evil" are used with quotation marks to indicate that these are the meanings the ego ascribes to them, and that, from the spiritual point of view, these meanings are false. The first quotation below is an example of this usage.
As with the entry on good and evil (bad) above, context is all important in determining whether the word good is used at (a) the ego-polarity level, (b) the right-minded/salvation healing level, or (c) the level of One-Minded Reality. Two examples of each category are given in the quotations below.
The term goodness is sometimes used at the level of One-Minded Reality, or, more usually, at the level of salvation, right-mindedness and healing. One example of each is given below. Note that (in the second goodness quotation) all opposites in terms of both horizontal ego-polarities and vertical Reality/illusion dualities must cease to exist for us if we are to remember our God-level Knowledge.
govern: Laws govern us, but we have a choice in this matter. We can continue to be governed by the chaotic, arbitrary laws of the ego that we have made, or we can accept the Laws of God which govern Everything, whether we are aware of this Fact or not. God's Power is Universal and His Laws of Love, Creation, Truth and Wholeness function flawlessly and eternally, no matter what we may dream in our unreal separated state. One of God's Laws is the total Freedom that He gave us (along with all His other Attributes) when He created us as Minds-as-such Beings within His Mind. This Law of Freedom, strangely, gives us the doubtful privilege (a) of inventing an imaginary world in our God-given Minds, (b) of spuriously "externalizing" this dream-world so that it appears to be outside us holographically, (c) of seeming to "live" in this world inside physical bodies, (d) of relating to one another through these bodies by using false mind-identities called egos, which facilitate these capricious relationships, and (e) of utilizing our fear-based, ego-projections of "authority" onto others, thus allowing ourselves to be governed by all these numerous law-making "authorities." But this entire [(a) through (e)] scenario is fake. In Truth we are under no Laws but God's, Whose Laws radiate perfect Love, Light, Peace, Joy, Happiness, Freedom and Knowledge to, and through, His Sons.
grace: Grace is God's Love in action; in an
active experiential relationship with His Children. In the following sentences
the terms which affirm God's Grace in action have been bolded for emphasis.
There is no suitable synonym for the immeasurable Loving, Beneficent Grace that flows continuously and eternally, at maximum strength, from God's Mind through our Minds which are in His. Yet God's Grace is much more than that, because, in His Grace, God thinks of each of His numberless Creations (Sons) ceaselessly and completely, thus ensuring each of us shares fully in His Own Mind-as-such Wholeness. Thus, in His Grace, God gives Himself including all His Attributes without limitation to each of us, with the absolute Freedom to do whatever we will, because that is His Benign Will for us.
But there is more. Through His Grace God is in perpetual, direct Communion with each of His Sons, both individually and as One, showering us with His Love, Light, Peace, Joy, Happiness, Reason, Knowledge, and with Life-as-Mind. God, in His Grace, Cares for each of us and about each of us. This Caring is unbounded and yet individualized because He bestows on each of us all His Beneficence and gives to us everything we Really need.
God's Grace is also in action throughout the Sonship, through whom it flows freely as an aspect of the Holy Spirit. All Minds-as-such, everywhere, act as communication conduits for God's Grace, and the more open to God any given Mind is, the greater the flow-through of that Grace. We humans, in our (mostly) separated dream-state, are in a state of Grace forever, even though we may be unaware of that constant immersion. There are many effects of God's Grace that are manifested here in our daily lives if we will allow them, freely, to happen. One major block to this flow of Grace is a lack of forgiveness (i.e., our fear and hate of others). Through active forgiveness we can experience God's Grace in our relationships and see the Christ in them. All healing is the result of Grace in action, if we are willing to heal. And our healing brings with it the Grace to heal others. Miracles, too, are acts of Love in this world caused by the flowing of God's Grace through us, miracles that are master-minded by Jesus as the Holy Spirit. The Holy Instant is the perfect now-moment to experience God's Grace directly; all we have to do is be willing to clear our minds of the ego's emotions, preoccupations and insane thoughts so that God can join us at our inner altar of Christ. Experiencing God's Grace continuously is the natural state of every Son of God.
grandeur: Grandeur is of God and the Christ-Self.
As God's Sons we share His Grandeur which is of God and not made by us. While
the central meaning of grandeur comes from the word "grand," it also
includes such concepts as splendor, freedom, abundance, magnificence, noble and
beautiful. God gave us of His Grandeur, out of His Love for us, when He created
us like Himself as Mind-Beings and it is a quality of His we still share. It is
the Reality of our Minds-as-such that is the loveliest of God's
creations, and, if we really looked at the true Grandeur of our own God-given
Mind-Reality, we would experience only Peace.
In the Course Grandeur and the grandiosity of the ego are contrasted, and that discussion is presented in the next entry (on grandiosity) below.
grandiosity: The Course draws a sharp contrast between Grandeur (see above entry) and grandiosity. While Grandeur is of God and the Christ Self in all of us, grandiosity is always of the ego. Grandiosity is defined in the Course as littleness, arrogance, attack, pride, despairing, competitiveness, while "sin" is its underlying illusion. The ego, however, does not understand the differences between spiritual-level Grandeur and its own grandiosity. We made grandiosity, but we are also afraid of it because it is a form of arrogant attack based on pride and ego-inflated, competitive superiority, which, in its turn, compensates for a deep belief in "sin," guilt, shame and littleness. These last characteristics of the ego's shadow may be hidden in us and projected onto the "sins" and "guilt" of other people. Therefore grandiosity is a polarized cover for a fundamental despair and guilt stemming from our continuing separation from both God and our True Grandeur as His Real Creations. Under the general umbrella of grandiosity we can include the ego's delusions of pride, fame, adulation, success, superiority, cleverness, and the hurts that come when any of these inflated bubbles are pricked!
grant: To grant somebody something is to give
them what it is that they have requested, or is their right, such as freedom or
help. The Course states that our brother's guiltlessness is both his
Atonement, as well as our own, and so, when we grant to him his
guiltlessness we will see the Truth that universal Innocence is given by God to all
His Sons, and always was.
In all matters, the Will of God is granted us and therefore our Will is granted. Moreover, we have been granted complete freedom of will.
grasp: There are many concepts in the Course that
Jesus tells us may be difficult to grasp (i.e., understand, comprehend, realize)
mostly because the ego is uncooperative and confused. Some of these
difficult-to-grasp ideas relate to the hidden structures and secret foundations
of our egos, such as guilt, hurting only yourself, perception as a means,
temptation, and a split allegiance between the gap of separation and our oneness
with our brothers.
A second set of difficult-to-grasp processes are those related to the right-minded level of transition and salvation from the ego's pursuits and concerns to One-Mindedness in God. These comprise miracles, equality, charity, abundance, as well as time as the "now" moment.
This aspect of time is also included in the third set of difficult-to-grasp ideas and Facts pertaining to God and Spirit. For example, it is very difficult to grasp the idea of God being in everything we see because He and everything are in our Minds-as-such. Equally, we find it difficult to understand truth as constant, the meaning of Universal Love, abstraction, Reason, Heaven, and God's readiness to give us Everything.
There is one last lesson we-as-egos find it very difficult-to-grasp, namely, the ending of the world itself, a tiny world we myopically cling to out of fear, while Heaven waits for us to come Home to Love Itself.
grateful, gratitude: Jesus tells us that, while
he does not need gratitude (because only an unhealed healer needs
gratitude) we need to develop our weakened ability to be grateful so we
can appreciate God. When we are grateful to our brother, we are grateful for
what God created.
Gratitude is thankfulness and an appreciation for a gift; appreciation is to see or esteem the value of the gift and to enjoy the gift. While we are grateful for the gift, we are also grateful to the person or Being who gives us the gift. We appreciate their gift even as we also appreciate (highly value) them, both for giving the gift and for being the large-hearted person they are. Note that it is the receiver of the gift who is grateful, but the giver of the gift is wrong-mindedly motivated if the thankfulness (gratitude, appreciation) of the receiver is needed and expected. Most of us, in our ego-state are miffed or even offended if the receiver of our gift does not express his or her thanks and appreciation.
We truly give out of Love, and Love is only giving, not taking or needing. Needy love is pseudo-love, which is only giving-to-get. In sincere (Loving) giving we give but to ourselves because all our brothers are our extensions within the Mind of God.
God, Himself, has given us Everything; should we not appreciate Him and be grateful for the Gifts of Life, Love, Peace, Joy, Happiness, Freedom, Knowledge and His Own Being?
The Course places great emphasis on the flow of our gratitude, appreciation and Love to God and all our brothers-in-God. Indeed, God, Himself, is grateful to us for looking peacefully upon our brothers and for sharing His Purpose of At-one-ment for all.
Great Light: There is a Spark in each of us that represents the Great Light of God, a Light that surrounds us and shines through us. This is not the electromagnetic light that the body's eyes behold. God is the Source of the Great Light. The Light-as-such is the medium of Mind-as-such which carries Communication, Knowledge, Reason and Understanding as Thought. But unlike the physical electromagnetic wave phenomena that we use as carrier waves for our media communications such as television and radio, the Great Mind-Light of God (which all His Creation share) is instantaneous, infinite, universally available, constant and maximal. The Great Mind Light of God carries His Thoughts of Love, Peace, Joy, Happiness, etc.
Great Rays: Please read the section above on the Great
Light first. Although the Great Rays operate through the Mind-as-such medium
of Light, they also carry the Life "Force" or Creative
"Energy" of God to each of His Sons. (The only somewhat inaccurate analogy
we have on earth would be the umbilical cord which supplies life-energy to the
child within the mother.) We can, however, in our separated state,
obscure the Great Rays of God's Light and block them from our Vision, even
though, in Fact, they continue to sustain us, quite undisturbed by our ego's
self-imposed blindness. Thus, even in this dreamworld, we still have within our
minds the little spark of Light that holds the Great Rays. That little spark
will burst forth as we Awaken to the Great Rays of Light that carry Love, Peace
and Joy. We also share the Great Rays with all our brothers because the Light of
the Great Rays connects us all with one another.
Thus, summarizing, we can describe the Great Rays as a life-energizing and sustaining Light network connecting every Mind-Being with one another within the Mind of God and with the Mind of God. In Heaven, which is the Mind of God, the Great Rays facilitate continuous Creation and Co-Creation of Mind-Beings within God's Mind.
grief: We separated ones experience the emotion
of grief primarily when a continuing source of affection and ego-love is lost to
us through death, or an unwanted separation (e.g., a soldier goes
off to a war, or a child goes into hospital without his or her parents). Grief,
then, is not on behalf of the person who dies, or is otherwise separated;
grief is only in our own egos which are no longer being filled up with
such pseudo-love as incoming affection, praise and admiration, being wanted,
security, pleasures, gifts and caring intimacy. All these are poor substitutes
for the Real Love of God and all His Sons. Once we Really understand Life
is eternal and Limitless Love is maximal, all grief, misery, loss and despair
become not only laughable, but impossible.
Note that in the Course quotations, grief, fear, pain, misery, loneliness, loss, etc., are usually lumped together, because the wider point that they are all insane and pointless is being made.
grievance: A grievance is a complaint or
resentment held against another person (or persons) about circumstances,
situations and conditions that are thought to be unjust, injurious or causing
hardship. Most often we hold grievances against those (usually in
"authority") who, we consider, have the power to right or
correct the perceived wrong, and if they do not do so the grievance is
The Course explains many times that our grievances and grudges (my word) are solely of the ego and that they block spiritual sight. Along with the whole ego we have to let go all grievances against our brothers and undo them with the help of the Holy Spirit. Real Love holds no grievances because all grievances are founded on fear, lack and ego-demands. Lessons 68 through 72 thoroughly explore the insanity of holding grievances and Lessons 89 and 90 further expand on this topic by pointing out the power of miracles of Love as the solution to every conflict, problem and grievance.
ground: The quotations below refer only to the use of the word "ground" as a symbol for anyone's position in terms of his or her beliefs and the rationale, laws, foundation, principles, and premises these beliefs rest on. In the Course there are three types of grounds on which our belief systems may stand, namely, (a) the nothingness and insanity of the ego/body, (b) the middle ground which is only a dream, and (c) the holy ground of Truth as exemplified in the Course itself. The ground on which the belief systems of the ego rest is described as barren, falsely solid and alien. The middle ground of believing that two or more worlds (some people might include "hell" along with the world of perception and Heaven) are true is untenable because when we seek for one the other disappears, and there is no overlap. But when we teach peace we stand with Jesus on holy ground where Heaven leans to join with it. Christ's Vision, which looks both inwards and outwards with Love and Joy on all people everywhere as Sons of God, is the holy ground in which forgiveness is rooted. Within us is the Christ-Child who knows His Father and whom His Father knows as His Own Son. This inner Christ-Child, who is full of light and innocence, walks on holy ground forever, the Holy "ground" of Heaven.
grow: We can continue to let our egos grow, along
with all their fearful and meaningless characteristics, or we can choose
to grow in Spirit by means of the At-one-ment process and thus resurrect our
eternal Christ-Selves from the separation's "living" death.
Egos can "grow" in many ways, which are not mutually exclusive. We can specialize in special relationships, we can specialize in sickness and hypochondria, we can allow fears and phobias to take over our lives, we can permit guilt and "sin" to dictate our thoughts and actions, and we can "live" in a state of inactive depression or even despair. On the so-called "up-beat" side of the ego we can decide to be addicted to a wide variety of activities, occupations and recreational pursuits. Anything in this world we become interested in and preoccupied with for its own sake falls into this ego-centered "positive" category, and this includes a good self-concept. Most psychotherapy and popular wisdom is dedicated to growing, strengthening and consolidating a dynamic, confident, secure, self-assured and friendly ego; one that can manipulate (handle in the widest sense) all its relationships, competitive goals and leisure activities very successfully. All this is a meaningless preoccupation with nothing.
The Course presents another kind of growth pattern. It is the Plan of God through which we end our dreams of separation and wake up in God. His Plan (the At-one-ment) is that we grow in gratitude, forgiveness, peacefulness, willingness and Love. This growth, brought about with the Holy Spirit's help, leads us to the Real World where God will take the Final Step of awakening us fully to His Awareness.
guarantee: The guarantees of the survival
of the ego are: war, non-solutions to problems, our insane laws, the perception
of form(s), the ego's self-concepts, searching for salvation where it is not,
wanting to keep everything for oneself, guilt and punishment, a belief in past
and future, and a belief in the "innocent face" of the ego.
The guarantees of transition, change and healing are: right motivation, the removal of blocks and obstacles, remembering there is one problem (separation) and one solution (salvation) and that all problems have been solved, that to forgive everyone and so be forgiven is the answer. We must also understand that, in Fact, our Minds hold only what we think with God.
The guarantees of God and the Holy Spirit are numerous. They guarantee: the At-one-ment will succeed, immortality, our safety, our sinlessness, happy outcomes, the transcending of ego, we have Everything, the strength of miracles, our body's health, our happiness as ministers of God, the Oneness of creation and our joy.
guardian: Jesus asks us to cease being the guardians of our thought systems and to open them all up to him so he can gently correct them and lead us to God. We can also share his message of the Love of God and His Grace by giving it to our brothers. We are the guardians of that message in this world. With the Love of God in us we see a Real world of innocence, alive with hope, one blessed with perfect charity, a world that acts as silent guardian to our holy sleep. In the "final analysis" we can affirm that it is the Love of God within us all that Life is all about. This Love is very gentle, even though it is the most powerful thing in Existence. However, because Love never coerces we must be its guardian and protector like a gardener with a new plant.
guest: The Guest Whom God has sent us is the Holy Spirit and we are His host. When we welcome the Holy Spirit as our guest the tiny spark of Spiritual Light in our Minds becomes a blazing Light and the ego vanishes. The Holy Spirit as our Guest will teach us how to bring the Knowledge of God back into our Minds. Our willingness to do this need not be perfect because the willingness of the Holy Spirit is perfect and He will teach us to be reunited with all Creation in a state of Loving Oneness.
guide, guidance: The Course refers to three
spiritual Guides Who, as One, give us the same guidance about the At-one-ment
process of Waking up to the experience of God. They are the Trinity, namely,
God, the Holy Spirit and the Son, the latter (in this instance) being Jesus. God
is a "Guide" only in the sense that it is His Word which is
utilized by the Holy Spirit and Jesus for our guidance. The Course tells us that
Jesus is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit (C-6.1:all) and as the Course comes
from Jesus, its contents are the Voice for God, the Holy Spirit. However, Jesus
is specific in singling out his role as being in charge of the process of
At-one-ment (T-1.III.1:all) and the bestowal of miracles (T-1.III.8:all). The Course
contains 144 references to guides and guidance therefore the following
have been selected as representative. As the ego can be a false guide the first
two quotations refer to that role of the ego.
One last point on guidance. The Course was dictated to Helen Schucman verbatim by Jesus. Therefore we have, in the Course itself, a complete resource for guidance on any topic, issue or confusion that may arise in our lives. All we need contribute is trust and a little willingness.
guilt: Guilt is a complex emotion (the ego
"loves" complexity) which combines fear, anger (aggression),
pseudo-love, authority, and a self-attitude of "sinful" unworthiness.
Here's how it works, but as you read what follows do not fall into the
conventional game of playing ego-polarities by buying into the
"horizontal" opposites. Rather, relinquish it all willingly for the
Holy Spirit to dissolve and allow the miracles of Love to happen.
As we grow up from infancy to adulthood we learn and absorb (introject, internalize) all the beliefs, values, regulations, principles, laws and correct behaviors from our parents, schools, religions, entertainments, government, legal system and other authorities (collectively called the parental authority system, or PAS). We all believe that these dictums and dogmas from the parental authority system (PAS) are right, necessary and proper; even those who rebel against them believe they are real enough to warrant rebellion. When, in childhood or adulthood, we disobey the rules and laws handed down by the parental authority system (PAS) we are, if caught, punished by authoritarian action, be it a reprimand, a deprivation, imprisonment (including grounding) or physical chastisement. Because punishment in all its forms is aggression from "above," i.e., the PAS, we quickly learn to fear its punishments and to conform to the rules, standards, demands and values the PAS imposes. In time we learn to accept the bulk of the decrees and proclamations of the PAS as right and worthy of our obedience. We also learn that if we disobey or transgress them we are not only wrong, but unworthy and guilty; such is the nature and definition of so-called sin, evil, immorality, badness and all iniquity, all of which are, in Fact, unreal. Of course, all this indoctrination by the PAS varies tremendously from religion to religion, from culture to culture, and even from family to family. We usually learn that our culture and family (i.e., our own PAS) are right and not to question them! At this point in our discussion of guilt remember that all the above is based on, (a) the negative premises (such as "sin," anger, etc.,) of a PAS which is usually internalized by us, (b) a fear of some kind of authoritarian pressure/punishment and, (c) an unquestioning belief-absorbing capacity on our part, mostly when we were children.
But there is more to guilt. From birth we, as egos, are taught to attach to, bond with, and show "love" for our parents, family, locality, religion, country, etc. This "attachment-love" is often also called "respect for," "loyalty to," "showing consideration for," "deference to," and "honoring" those involved, be they parents, teachers, clergy, leaders, or our country. It is this ego-"attachment-love" to the PAS combined with the fear of pressure/punishment from the PAS that makes us feel guilty when we disobey or otherwise contravene the PAS code of "legal" acceptable behaviors and desirable acts. Furthermore we feel guilty toward, and because of, those persons in the PAS we "honor, love and respect."
In contrast to the above guilt-making situation by the PAS, merciless tyrants and dictators cause only fear and anxiety in us, but not guilt, because we do not "love" them. We may rebel against such tyrants but the insurrection is, we have decided, quite just and without any of the guilt we usually feel when we "turn away from," or rebel against, respected parents or other respected PAS authorities. Also note that when we "punish," or "turn away from" children, spouses, friends, or significant others the "love-attachment" bond is two-way (i.e., upwards to our own original mothers and fathers and outwards to our child, spouses, friends or significant others) and this often places us in a psychological love-bind which confuses us. For example, when, as a parent, we train a child, do we (a) obey the implanted PAS principles handed down to us by our own "loved" parents and punish him, or (b) allow the "loved" child to continue with what others consider "antisocial" behavior? Either way we will feel guilty to either our PAS parents or to our child. Because the PAS (including "love-bonding" of various sorts) is a part of almost all our past and present relationships, guilt is everywhere. For most of us guilt would seem to be inescapable.
The Course tells us that guilt, projection, blame, and attack, whether incoming or outgoing, are invariably associated with our belief that bodies are real. This is one of the ego's most fundamental beliefs maintaining the separation and therefore it must be included with all our other complex PAS/"love-bonding" ego-beliefs.
Few of us, however, like to feel guilty within ourselves, so the duplicitous ego usually defends itself against the internal discomfort of guilt by ignoring it within itself, and then seeing the projected guilt and "evil sins" in others. This keeps almost all responsibility for sin, crime, guiltiness and perceived aggression outside us because we now judge, blame and condemn others for all our own inner problems, issues and conflicts. As adults we can even "turn around" in our projected guilt and blame our personal parents (as the main contributors to our personal PAS) without understanding they were, and are, in the same insane, separated, ego-PAS "boat" as we still are, and, indeed, all separated humans are. Even this projected blaming of the "loved and respected" PAS makes us feel confused and guilty. [A few people like to take on the long-suffering, guilt-laden victim or martyr role to get attention or be "worthier" and they will beat-up on themselves for their "sins," but they still see themselves surrounded by controlling persons and persecutors onto whom they are projecting.] Thus it is important to realize fully that there is nothing outside us, and that all the (assigned) roles, "sins" and other shortcomings we see in (projected out onto) others are inside us, including the PAS, tyrant, victim and murderer! Therefore we have to withdraw all our projections onto others, and recognize each of us is individually responsible for our separation from God along with all its seeming consequences. Only when we remove "the log" darkening our own eyes (i.e., darkening our spiritual vision) will we see clearly to help others. (See: condemn, identity, martyr)
Indeed, the major foundation of all our guilt is our (imagined) attack on God when we thought we usurped His place, His Throne, and thought we made Him (as our Father) angry. All this act of separation from an imagined "PAS" was not, and is not, Real; it is imagination, projection and delusion. However, we now believe our Father seeks to punish us for this so-called "original sin." This results in massive guilt on our part, but we are still in the irresolvable dilemma of kill or be killed by the Father. Thus we, as egos, tend to seek to kill (i.e., crucify) Spirit (as an aspect of the Father) wherever we find it, especially the Christ in our brothers who may, or may not, be perceived as part of the ego's PAS. Whichever tack we take in this dilemma (e.g., attacking/punishing others or getting sick out of guilt) we will inevitably feel guilty.
How, then, can we relinquish this guilt, the sense of "sinning," the projections and blame, and the externalizing of our own inner ego-darkness and replace all of this nonsense with Love and Peace? The Course presents many answers and solutions to this problem of guilt, even though (in the final analysis) they are all facets of one solution (waking up to One Love) to one problem (our seeming separation from God). All these facets of the Atonement's healing process call for dismantling the ego, and, with a little willingness, at the same time requesting the help of the Holy Spirit, non-stop.
Guilt, "sin," judgment, blame, condemnation, punishment, the PAS, the "laws," etc., are all a meaningless, illusory, collective defense of the ego for the purpose of perpetuating our state of imagined separation from one another and God. In the Light of Love they all become totally unnecessary. As we relinquish these ego-defenses back into the nothingness from whence they came, we will each uncover the eternal Love, Light, Peace, Joy and Knowledge that are a part of our eternal inheritance as Sons of God.
There are 503 references to guilt in the Course which makes guilt one of the key ego-related topics in the curriculum. Whole sections are devoted to discussing the many facets of guilt and the Holy Spirit's solutions, collectively called the Atonement.
guiltless, guiltlessness: God created us
guiltless and the Reality of our guiltlessness is eternal. Synonyms for
guiltlessness are purity and innocence. Only our eternal guiltlessness can
protect us. In Fact we are invulnerable because we are guiltless.
Everyone on this earth is a guiltless Son of God and everyone has a
special part to play in the At-one-ment by giving to each one the same message;
"God's Son is guiltless." Thus, we restore guiltlessness to whomever
we see as guiltless.
Once we realize God's Sons (every one of us) are guiltless we see a world without fear, a Real world which sparkles with hope, friendliness and Love. The Holy Spirit wants to release us from fear and re-establish the reign of Love everywhere.
habit: We can be habituated to the attributes and
"addictions" of the ego, or to engaging with God and His
Creations, i.e., all Sons of God. Almost everything we do as humans in a body is
a habit, such as eating, sleeping, working, talking, etc. Our numerous
ego-habits have become sufficiently ingrained (over eons of time) to keep us
gripped by their core compulsions even after the habits' foundations have been
uprooted by Heaven's "smile of love." This is especially true with
respect to our egos' habit of searching for "sin," both within and
without. But we can learn to see all "sins" as correctable
errors. These mistakes we can (a) easily correct in ourselves, and (b) give to
the Holy Spirit to correct in our brothers, as (c) we forgive everyone for
"sins" that never happened in Reality.
It is a most unnatural habit for us not to communicate continuously with our Creator. We can, however, achieve this constant communion with God and the Sonship if we establish the happy habit of not allowing our minds to slip away into diverse ego-preoccupations; this is a choice.
We never hate our brother for his sins, but only for our own. This realization, the Course says, must become our habitual first response to any temptation to attack and to condemn another person, no matter how much we may consider our accusation justified. Thus we must overlearn that only the self-accused (each of us as ego) condemn.
To aid us with any temptation to perceive ourselves as weak or miserable, Jesus has added a second "happy habit of response," namely: I am as God created me. His Son can suffer nothing. And I am His Son. (Full quotation below)
The thought: I place the future in the Hands of God, can, with practice, become an habitual one in our problem-solving repertoire, one we can use as a quick reaction to any temptation brought about by depression or guilt.
Yet another sound habit we need to cultivate is to ask God and the Holy Spirit for help, wisdom and guidance, morning, noon and night.
Miracles are habits, and should be involuntary. This means that all miracles should be left to Jesus to perform because he is the only one who can perform miracles indiscriminately. Because miracles are natural expressions of Love we can devote each day to the habit of asking for miracles for both ourselves and others. (Refer to: T-1.I.all) None of the above beneficial habits should become automatic, ritualistic or unthinking. Rather, be alert, and apply them quite deliberately to everyone, including yourself.
hallucination: Our hallucinations are many and
varied and all of them serve to meet the ego's goal of insanity. While the Course
uses the words "hallucinates" and "hallucination" in
their dictionary meaning of perceiving sights, sounds, etc., that are not
actually present, the Course extends this delusional perception to
include all that the body's eyes see and the body's ears hear. Thus, this world
is an hallucination and so are our bodies.
But even more important than the unreality of physical forms (and the time/space dimensions which seem to support them) are the delusions and hallucinations of the ego's belief systems such as, "sin," guilt, judgment, blame, death, birth, destruction, lack, fear, hate, evil, specialness, deprivation, betrayal, abandonment, pain, attack, limitation, weakness, sickness, insanity, unforgiveness, sleep, dreams, loneliness, obstacles, sacrifice, secrets, punishment, pleasure, suffering, enemies, grief, murder, change, misery, despair, sorrow, loss, unfairness, vengeance, problems, arrogance, projection, rejection, strife, and darkness, all of which rest on the non-existent foundation of our imagined separation from God. (Note that any of the above terms can be found in this Companion.) Of course, all these insane hallucinatory beliefs, ideas and perceptions of the non-existent ego have to be dismantled, undone and let go. (See: forgive, ego) The Holy Spirit is always ready to help us with this task once we are willing to relinquish the ego and its contents. The one answer to all hallucinations is Truth. (See also: delusion, dream, fantasies, illusion, imagination)
hand: The significance of hands, as a frequently
used symbol in the Course, is important to an understanding of several themes.
Hands carry out and expedite the instructions the mind gives them, and
it is this action
(even when passive) that is often used symbolically in verbal expressions such
as, "you are in good hands" and "we joined hands around the
The Course, then, refers to several "owners" of these, usually, symbolic hands, namely, (a) the ego, (b) each of us as we presently are, (c) our brothers, (d) the Holy Spirit, (e) the inner Christ and Christ-Child, (f) Jesus himself, and (g) God, the Father. The "God. the Father" ACIM quotations below are all sufficiently clear in meaning to need no further explanations.
God holds your hands, and what can separate whom He has joined as one with Him? (T-22.V.3:5)
You are but asked to let the future go, and place it in God's Hands. And you will see by your experience that you have laid the past and present in His Hands as well, because the past will punish you no more, and future dread will now be meaningless. (W-pI.194.4:5-6)
What worry can beset the one who gives his future to the loving Hands of God? What can he suffer? (W-pI.194.7:1-2)
Now are we saved indeed. For in God's Hands we rest untroubled, sure that only good can come to us. (W-pI.194.9:1-2)
happen: It can be a constant surprise to students
of the Course to read many times that God did not allow a place of darkness to
happen. It is not Real. This world of ego could only happen in fantasy, in
dreams and delusions. There is nothing outside us. In Reality our separation
from God into a dreamworld of our own making never happened at all. Forgiveness,
too, merely forgives what never happened.
Another key theme of the Course is that all that happens to us in this dark world of fearful and angry dreams is asked for by us and duly received! It is our own decisions to remain separate that determine every event that happens to us. Nothing happens by chance or accident anywhere or at any time.
Yet, even though we are responsible for our perceptions of (and decisions about) all events, situations and happenings, the Holy Spirit gently plans them with us, never to offer pain or suffering, but to lead us out of the ego's insane maze, to eternal Life. Every happening is another opportunity to choose again that defenselessness is the way Home, and Love is God's Answer.
It is all the laws and beliefs of this world of illusion that we made (to maintain the separation) which govern what happens to us in the dream we dream. However, the miracles wrought by the Holy Spirit (if we allow them to happen) will cause us to change the content of the dream so we realize, usually gradually, who the actual dreamer is, i.e., the sleeping Son of God. (See also: accident, chance, events, happenings)
happenings: Please read the above section above
on happen first. As ego-identified beings we believe that all happenings
are coming to us from outside. We also believe that their causes
are almost all outside us, causes such as other people, nature, germs and
viruses, accidental events, chance, the workplace and, not infrequently, acts of
God. Even many so-called beneficial happenings are ascribed by us to luck,
synchronicities, or "miracles."
The Course, however, states quite unequivocally that it is impossible that all happenings that come to us are not our choice. Even the miracles that happen to us, while they may originate in the Holy Spirit or Jesus, only come to us with our permission or through our direct request.
Nothing is beyond us and there is nothing outside our minds. But because, as egos, we believe outside events influence us and impinge on our daily lives, we spend much of our time preoccupied with setting up control of future happenings. Our basis for all this contingency planning can be found in our fears, fears that have their roots in our past. This planning for, or rather against, expected mishaps or catastrophic happenings lulls our fears and gives us a false sense of security. This is all the more ridiculous when it is realized we are the original cause of everything that happens to us in this world, and that none of it is real.
The way out of this "futurizing" is to see this world through Christ's Vision, because through his spiritual Mind we see out with eyes of Love. To aid in this process we need to dismantle the ego.
happiness: There are subtle differences of
meaning in the terms, happiness, love, peace and joy, and it can be beneficial
to explore these meanings.
Happiness is actually a state of mind; it is not a verb, in that we do not "happy" ourselves or others. What, then, is the verb that brings Happiness? It is Love!
Love is essentially an active verb, inasmuch as we love someone, or even, possibly, ourselves. Perhaps we should define love as an "interactive verb" because, almost always, there is a person, an animal or an object to which we direct our love. However, our ego-love for one another, animals or objects never brings about a state of Real Happiness, even though colloquially we usually affirm we are "happily in love."
It is only when we return to an interactive and ceaseless Love of God and all His Creations including our Selves, that we will be in a True state of eternal Happiness. This Loving state of Supreme Happiness will, in turn, engender Peace which, by definition, is a complete absence of all forms of fear, aggression and ego-needs. In this context, it is important to realize that when, at the Spiritual level, we Love God and all His Sons our Love is for the Oneness of all Being within the Mind-as-such of God.
Spiritual Joy is an experience we feel in the state of Happiness that results from actively Loving God and all His Creations, i.e., the Sonship. This state of Happiness and Joyful Loving is the happy outcome of our complete forgiveness of everyone and everything in this world of unreality.
The goal the Course has for us is eternal Happiness and perfect Peace. The Course also states that our ultimate purpose (i.e., activity) after we Awaken again in the Mind of God, is to extend Love, Happiness and Peace eternally as co-creators with Him. We can experience Genuine Happiness in the Holy Instant. (Read Workbook Lesson 109: I rest in God.)
We can evaluate the Truth of our happiness at any time by asking ourselves how constant and maximal it is. If it shifts, fades and changes forms it is false and of the ego; if it does not last it is actually fear or a polarized compensation for fear. Real Happiness can never suffer change of any kind because it is God-given.
We should not be content with the idea of happiness sometime in the future because it can be experienced Joyfully now, in any Holy Instant. This does not contradict what was said in the paragraph above because, in the Holy Instant, we are really tapping into the eternal Happiness of God, within our Selves.
What about our ego-level relationships? It is in these special relationships that the ego plays out its most tricky, hoodwinking deceptions, in terms of its version of our happiness. As egos, we imagine our happiness in relationships comes from assigning roles to those around us and then manipulating or pressuring them (however subtly or gently) to fulfill those roles to our satisfaction. This may include "giving to get." This leveraged happiness is false because it is based on the illusion that someone outside us can make us happy; that our happiness depends on their input. This can never be True. In another ego-scenario many of us think our happiness depends on our being right in any given situation, and so we hold grievances when we perceive others as saying we are wrong. But do we wish to be right or to be happy? Incidentally, the ego (any ego) is always wrong.
The Course says guilt creeps in where happiness has been removed. Thus guilt becomes the ego's substitute for happiness. The ego will even persuade us the body's pleasure is happiness, so much so that even pain can seem to be pleasurable. But pain and pleasure are ego-polarities that are inextricably mixed, and they are never Happiness. Likewise idols, addictions and obsessions, whether powerful or trivial, are guilty substitutes for Happiness which is only of God.
Jesus is our model for attaining Real Happiness because, in his complete identification with the Christ, he became what all of us must be.
happy: Please read the section above on happiness
first. While happiness (in the Course) almost always refers to a spiritual level
state of Mind, the adjective happy is used on all three levels (see:
dual, levels), i.e., body/ego, the right-minded level and the spiritual level.
It is, however, mostly used to describe certain events (e.g., happy
lessons, happy dreams) and the happy feelings which occur at the level of
right-mindedness. These happy events, feeling situations, and reactions (e.g.,
happy laughter) are all defined and described as separate entries in this Companion
following this entry. Here, in this section we will examine the use of the word happy
in more general contexts.
First, it is important to understand all the ploys, preoccupations and devious methods the ego employees to make sure we are not happy, even though, on occasions, we may think we are. Dwelling on the past, and operating our lives on the basis of past events and learning, is the ego's main device for insuring we are not happy. The past has taught us to believe in sin, guilt, blame, judgment and punishment as the ego's main method of handling and manipulating all our special relationships with the purpose of keeping pseudo-love and fleeting satisfactions flowing our way.
We find it hard to credit that the ego's primary goal for us is death. While this always includes the death of the body the Course emphasizes that any ego-activity that is perpetuating our separation from God (and from one another as His Sons), such as sickness, despair, guilt, poverty, insanity and aging, is all bound up in the ego's preoccupation with death (see: death). Death is actually a thought, a belief of the ego that separation is real, but death will not make us happy even though we sometimes believe it will. For example, we may say, "if I kill (i.e., get rid of) my enemy I will be happy." Furthermore the Course states that though we are devoted to misery we think it is happiness. In other words, we are only superficially "happy" as a cover up for the misery of isolation from one another and from God. Special, unholy love and hate relationships will never make us happy, not only because they are founded on sin and guilt, but because they are so limited and binding.
Another great source of pseudo-happiness perpetrated by the ego is to fascinate us with idols, especially those idols associated with special relationships and the bodies they involve. (See: T-20.VI.all) The Course unequivocally states that any relationship in which the body enters is based not on [spiritual] Love, but on idolatry.
When we decide to walk with the Holy Spirit the Light of Christ will light our faces and we will be Happy together. All this requires is forgiveness and universal Love. (See: T-22.IV:all) We can give up the games of sin and guilt and realize we are pure and innocent Children of God. Through forgiveness every fear thought can be exchanged for a happy thought of Love. Love asks us only to be happy and Love will give us everything we need that makes for happiness. The Holy Spirit will ensure this happiness once we give the power of decision to Him. Once we see this world of form and ego as meaningless and let the Holy Spirit write the Truth upon it for us, we will be indescribably happy. In this, as always, total forgiveness is the key to happiness. Once this At-one-ment process is accomplished we will be completely happy because we will Know God, now.
happy dreams: This phrase does not refer primarily to our dreams while asleep at night, though they may be included. It refers to our waking state during the day, when we are operating our lives and relationships on the level of right-mindedness. The Course tells us that while we are in any state of separation from God and the Sonship we are literally dreaming; that this world of ego is only imagination, a fantasy, and it is not Real, even though we may seem to be wide awake. Whenever we function at the ego/body level of deep separation our waking dreams here are fearful, angry nightmares of conflict and sickness, occasionally alleviated by childish dreams of elation or pleasure. These weird dreams, which the Course says would be better termed hallucinations, are based on fear, sin, guilt, lack and condemnation. But when we move up a level into right-mindedness as a part of our spiritual healing (the At-one-ment process), although we are still "dreaming," our lives and all our relationships now tend to become happier, more peaceful and more innocent. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and with our clear willingness to be spiritually transformed, our happy dreams lead us along the path of Truth to God, not to death. And throughout this process Jesus is more than happy to take us by the hand.
happy learners: One of the intermediate
objectives of the Course as we "transition" from an ego/body
orientation and way of perceiving, to a right-minded God-oriented
perception is to transform us into happy learners of the At-one-ment.
Largely as a result of our past training as children and students (mostly at the hands of the parental authority system, we have regarded learning as a chore, one we may even actively resist or reject.
The Course explains that we cannot become happy learners until we relinquish all judgment, and acknowledge that Christ's Vision shows us where to go; that Heaven is our only goal. Once this Vision is accomplished by our learning, our brothers then seeing the Light of Christ in us, will also become happy learners.
happy lessons: The happy lesson the Holy Spirit
teaches is that darkness in any form has no power over the Sons of God. This is
a very important statement because many people seem to believe that there are
times or even "beings" in whom the "powers" of darkness are
more powerful than the Sons of God or even God, Himself.
The only darkness in our lives is that of our separation from God and His Love and Light, and all dark thoughts and situations are projected manifestations of that deliberate separation. The Answer then is to reunite with God as His Sons by waking up from our dreams of darkness, and the Course is full of happy lessons, messages, communications and exercises to fulfill God's Plan for our salvation.
harm: We humans, because we believe we are egos
who live in bodies that seem real, also believe we can cause harm to those
bodies by attacking them, and that they can, in their turn, attack and harm us.
We believe that our safety
depends on attacking others, especially attacking back, i.e., vengeance. We
rationalize all this attacking as self-defense, which we think, keeps us safe.
But this world of ego provides no safety because it is rooted in fear, attack and defensiveness. Any safety we imagine is here is a delusion. The effects of attack harm others as well as ourselves; attack as a harmful purpose hurts all minds as one and thus perpetuates the separation.
The Holy Spirit is a wise teacher who does not emphasize what we must do to avoid harm because that would establish it as real. The Holy Spirit teaches us what we need to learn in order to experience joy.
It is our sinlessness and defenselessness that protects us from all harm. We need do nothing by ourselves, for we need only seek the guidance of our Selves, the Holy Spirit and the Sonship to be free of all harm, forever. God's teachers can neither harm nor be harmed
harmony: The definition of harmony is the
combining of discrete parts into a pleasing, integrated whole. This is a process
which the Course states, takes place during the spiritual healing of our
dissociated fragmentation, i.e., our unreal, chaotic separation from God.
Healing integrates us individually and collectively into one harmonious Whole,
fully Awake in the Mind of God.
The ego will always endeavor to disrupt and disorganize our efforts to heal our minds spiritually because it sees any harmonious Union as an intolerable threat to its own existence. The One Self is Harmony.
In each Holy Instant spent with God every relationship is seen to be within the Loving Harmony of the Whole.
harsh: The Course does not use equivocal language
when describing the attributes of the ego. Consider the first quotation below as
one sample, and there are many, many others.
In a revealing passage the Course tells us the separation was not a loss of perfection but a failure in communication, and that the ego's voice is a harsh and strident disrupter of true communication.
The ego, in the pursuit of this disruption, commands us harshly to use fear in our relationships, usually by getting angry, but the Course says that if we do, we will not escape the punishment the ego offers those who obey it. Furthermore, if we ever question whether or not the ego's demands for cruelty are sensible or sane it will punish us relentlessly.
Whenever guilt harshly intrudes too far into the ego's comfort, the ego advises us to forget it, to sleep, or even die. But underneath all these harsh tactics and bitter ploys of the ego, the Voice of the Holy Spirit speaks to us of God and the wisdom of the Course.
hate: The Course does not shy away from this
word, using it and its derivatives some 226 times. The reason is that the Course
does not recognize differences, degrees or gradations in our ego-emotions and
therefore classifies even the mildest feelings of dislike or vexation as hate.
The ego, of course, wants us to believe we never really hate, except perhaps under extreme provocation, and that all our aggressive thoughts and actions are fully justified because the other person or group is obviously to blame. They are (we say) not only quite wrong, but also they fully deserve the impact of our righteous wrath and everything else they have "coming to them," especially in terms of just punishment. This ego-attitude, we feel, is valid in any relationship including acquaintances, colleagues, family members, friends, groups and nations. We judge as guilty all those whose evil or villainous acts hurt, inconvenience or deprive us, then we hate them and seek vengeance. Although hate always has a deep foundation of fear (usually of something of value being taken from us, or of something we dislike being forced on us) that fear is often overridden by our outrage over the violation of our rights, or the rights of those with whom we identify. Nevertheless, underneath the hate/outrage, the fear is still there.
One of the most bizarre aspects of our imagined separation from God is that we, as self-made egos, fear a revengeful God and therefore hate Him. In this dreamworld we believe God hates us (even if He loves us, too) and will punish us for our separation from Him as well as for our other sins. Moreover, this scenario has been re-enacted within the dream at the ego-level wherein we, as the creator of the figures (i.e., our brothers as projections) in our dream, hate them for their sins (also projected by us) of "separation" (e.g., abandonment, rejection, separation, betrayal, attack). In this same weird ego-dream we also think they hate us because we are revenge-seekers out to punish them for their crimes and misdemeanors of separation committed against us or our group. All this is our on-going personal projected dreamworld scenario, even if a group of us as separated ones, is involved. It is a Fact, there is nothing outside us.
Special love/hate relationships, which are the only kind we humans-as-egos have, are a major topic of investigation in the Course. All special love/hate relationships have as their basis,
(a) an inner emptiness caused by our separation from God,
(b) a consequent deep fear of loneliness here, in this world ruled by ego,
(c) a continuous need for pseudo-love in many forms to fill the empty aloneness feeling (e.g., ego-attachment, bonding, physical contact, verbal reassurances, success),
(d) a continuous need to indulge ourselves with idols, solaces and distractions to fill our empty feelings of loneliness (e.g., money, possessions, entertainment, thrills, food, busyness, highs),
(e) projecting out onto others that they are the cause of our emptiness and loneliness, especially when they do not fulfill and satisfy our needs for pseudo-love, idols and distractions,
(f) when they (i.e., spouse, lover, family, boss, government, etc.,) do not fulfill that role of supplying us with what we think we need or want (e.g., affectionate pseudo-love, money, loyal support, benefits) we get angry, judge them as villainous, and will hate them if the withholding continues--because we believe we are entitled to their commitment, and so,
(g) usually, when one source of pseudo-love supply permanently dries up, we seek another person or situation as a replacement, or we may find a substitute routine such as an addiction or a source of satisfaction that we ourselves can regularly "supply."
There are numerous variations and distortions of the special love/hate relationship described above. In fact they range from almost entirely exclusive "soul-mate" pseudo-love pairings, through transient but frequent partnerships, to well-established, "love-to-hate-you" locked-in unions.
The Course pinpoints bodies as the key focus of our hate, because we can punish and even kill the bodies of our (ego-projected) "enemies," both personal and collective. After all, it is impossible to "get at" a bodiless mind to attack it, still less to kill it, even though a few people try! We may even punish our own bodies through sickness, inflicted pain, accidents, or mutilation especially when we hate our bodies for the habits, addictions and perceived imperfections we drop (project) into them from the ego. We do this without realizing this is one of the ego's major devices for shifting the blame from itself; the psychological error is converted into a physical one where it is thought to be "outside" the mind. In all these ego-to-body hate and conflict conversions, the only true healing is to shift the conflict and hate back into the mind, then own it, withdraw all projections, forgive yourself and others, and then give it all to the Holy Spirit to dissolve with a miracle.
Yet another concomitant of hate is sacrifice, especially sacrifices we have made on behalf of others (e.g., giving time, money, work, effort) which are not returned to us as some satisfying form of pseudo-love. Yet behind all sacrifices (even to God) is the ego's idea of a dutiful giving-to-get bargain in which our giving is required first. This giving-to-get is, we feel, an imposition and deep down we hate the other individual (or God) for requiring such a conditional sacrifice. The Course tells us that all sacrifice is unreal insanity.
Many of us regard love (and Love) as weakness, whereas hate, attack, and defense are seen as strong. We admire strong, honest Knights (of both sexes) and look down on the meek, loving ones who do not stand up for (defend) themselves. This is a constant ego-theme in all our competitive activities (e.g., sports, games, business, armed forces, disciplinary institutions, schools, family life), as well as our entertainments. Most often in this life, in order to win pseudo-love (applause, admiration, adulation, praise, even hugs) we have to succeed, win, triumph, and generally "beat out" the competition. But most "loving" activities in this world of ego, before long, become an expected duty! As parents, teachers, and as a society, almost all of us "love" and admire the strong winners and feel sorry for the weak losers. Of course, this system of earning "love" by being successful in many different areas of life (e.g., school, work, games, relationships), causes us to unconsciously hate the parental authority system (see: authority) which is responsible for this highly conditional "love-getting" arrangement; one which requires us to work hard and succeed at winning, usually for a whole lifetime!
We humans organize groups so that we can participate together in our favorite hates. Remember that, in the Course, "hate" means any dislike, however mild. As egos we all feel these groups (political, religious, environmental, economic, health, sports, etc.,) are quite justified to further our cause, because our shared goal of converting, defeating, even destroying the "hated ones" is quite fair, right, and desirable in terms of our world-view of the greater ego-good. We even form groups to hate the haters! There seems to be no end to this insane nonsense, and at the ego-level there is no end, simply because the polarity process goes in circles.
The Course explains very clearly that all the sins, evil, destructiveness, impositions, deprivations, malice and guilt we impute to others (and accuse them of) are inside our own minds and nowhere else. All the iniquities, sins and guilt we see in others are our own projections onto those we fear, hate, condemn and attack. This is an extremely important (and very healing) understanding for us to grasp, one that is stressed by Jesus throughout the Course. Because it is all in our own minds, it is equally crucial we search out and openly examine all these internal shadow hates, fears, "sins," wrongdoings, destructiveness, malice, guilts, needs, etc. Remember both sides of every ego-polarity (i.e., the "good" and the "evil") are inside each and every human being, and just because one side appears to be in the consciousness of any individual does not mean the other side is not there subconsciously, ready to break out. Once we have acknowledged the shadow aspect of our minds openly to the Holy Spirit, they can be brought to the Light and given to the Holy Spirit to dissolve with miracles. Any guilty secrets we keep from the Holy Spirit hinder our own salvation as well as that of our brothers. Give them all to Him. Through our One Holy Relationship with all our brothers, every Holy Instant we experience with the Holy Spirit will cause thousands to rise to Heaven (the Mind 0f God) with us.
haunt: We are haunted in this world of ego by a
sense of aimlessness, a futility of function, by "evil" thoughts, by a
dismaying array of problems, by lack of meaning in our little lives, and many
bouts of fear. All these "hauntings" are the result of having egos
which rests on nothing but a gap, a void, caused by our separation from God.
Yet, we are also haunted by a faint memory of our Home in God and that there is more to life than an endless round of meaningless pursuits and fluctuating polarities.
We will not be content until we have fulfilled our function of forgiveness and of helping our brothers rise from the past.
haven: The haven of the ego is the special love
relationship which seeks to isolate those involved from hate and guilt by
building barricades against them. Unfortunately, sooner or later, the barricades
are broken and the underlying fears and hatreds burst through.
Our only Real haven is Heaven where fear can never enter because the Love is universal, maximal and eternal.
having: In a few passages the Course uses the
word "having" in a distinct way, and even italicizes it. In the
Kingdom [the Mind] of God in which we have our Being, our Life, there is no
difference between having
and being. As His Sons, His Creations, God has given us all His
Attributes; in Fact He has given us Himself. Therefore,
(a) we have Love and we are Love,
(b) we have Light and we are Light,
(c) we have Peace and we are Peace,
(d) we have Joy and we are Joy,
(e) we have Happiness and we are Happiness,
(f) we have Freedom and we are Freedom,
(g) we have Knowledge and we are Knowledge, and
(h) we have Spirit and we are Spirit.
But the ego acknowledges none of this equality of having and being. To the ego to have something is quite different from being something. We see ourselves as separate living human beings who identify with our bodies; that is who we are. Our possessions, on the other hand, are what we have, what we own, what we have acquired, and superficially we do not admit to identifying with those possessions. We may even "own" a family ("This is my family.") but we distinguish clearly between our own body-mind and the bodies and ego-minds of the others.
The ego, of course, is very mistaken because possessions, bodies, families and even egos are illusions we have invented to blind ourselves to the Oneness of Having and Being which is the Kingdom.
healing [Part 1 of 3]: This is one of the most important entries in the Companion because it lists almost all the healing ideas, themes and practices in the Course, and it also includes those that do not heal us. In order to cope with approximately 900 references to healing and its derivatives and the large number of topics it embraces, this entry on healing has been sectioned into the following comprehensive categories which are self-explanatory. The ego invests heavily in the past, and in the end believes the past is the only aspect of time that is meaningful. Remember that its emphasis on guilt enables it to ensure its continuity by making the future like the past, and thus avoiding the present. By the notion of paying for the past in the future, the past becomes the determiner of the future, making them continuous without an intervening present. For the ego regards the present only as a brief transition to the future, in which it brings the past to the future by interpreting the present in past terms. "Now" has no meaning to the ego. C. EGO: MORE BELIEFS AND BLOCKS, THREATS TO THE EGO AND ITS REACTIONS

Healing and Atonement are not related; they are identical. (M-22.1:1)

F. THE HOLY SPIRIT, JESUS, THE HOLY INSTANT
The Holy Spirit is God's Answer to the separation; the means by which the Atonement heals until the whole mind returns to creating. (T-5.II.2:5
I [Jesus] said before that the Holy Spirit is the Answer. He is the Answer to everything, because He knows what the answer to everything is. (T-8.IX.1:1-2)
Yet I [Jesus] do want to share my mind with you because we are of one Mind, and that Mind is ours. See only this Mind everywhere, because only this is everywhere and in everything. It is everything because it encompasses all things within itself. Blessed are you who perceive only this, because you perceive only what is true. (T-7.V.10:9-12)
There is no sadness where a miracle has come to heal. And nothing more than just one instant of your love without attack is necessary that all this occur. In that one instant you are healed, and in that single instant is all healing done. What stands apart from you, when you accept the blessing that the holy instant [of your Love without attack] brings? Be not afraid of blessing, for the One Who blesses you loves all the world, and leaves nothing within the world that could be feared. (T-27.V.4:1-5)
G. THE PLACE OF LEARNING, UNLEARNING, THERAPY, TEACHING, AND THE HOLY RELATIONSHIP IN HEALING
1. Accept the miracle of healing; accept what the Holy Spirit says in the Course.
The only way to heal is to be healed. The miracle extends without your help, but you are needed that it can begin. Accept the miracle of healing, and it will go forth because of what it is. It is its nature to extend itself the instant it is born. And it is born the instant it is offered and received. No one can ask another to be healed. But he can let himself be healed, and thus offer the other what he has received. Who can bestow upon another what he does not have? And who can share what he denies himself? The Holy Spirit speaks to you. He does not speak to someone else. Yet by your listening His Voice extends, because you have accepted what He says. (T-27.V.1:all)
2. Be willing to abandon all illusions and accept only Completion. (See: completion)
In the Name of God, be wholly willing to abandon all illusions. In any relationship in which you are wholly willing to accept completion, and only this, there is God completed, and His Son with Him. (T-16.IV.9:5-6)
3. Do not seek for love (or Love) outside yourself, but do seek to find and remove all the inner barriers to the Love within you.
Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all of the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. It is not necessary to seek for what is true, but it is necessary to seek for what is false. Every illusion is one of fear, whatever form it takes. And the attempt to escape from one illusion into another must fail. If you seek love outside yourself you can be certain that you perceive hatred within, and are afraid of it. Yet peace will never come from the illusion of love, but only from its reality. (T-16.IV.6:all)
4. Healing is a collaborative venture with Jesus, one in which we choose to follow him, and accept his inner guidance.
Do you not think the world needs peace as much as you do? Do you not want to give it to the world as much as you want to receive it? For unless you do, you will not receive it. If you want to have it of me [Jesus], you must give it. Healing does not come from anyone else. You must accept guidance from within. The guidance must be what you want, or it will be meaningless to you. That is why healing is a collaborative venture. I [Jesus] can tell you what to do, but you must collaborate by believing that I know what you should do. Only then will your mind choose to follow me. Without this choice you could not be healed because you would have decided against healing, and this rejection of my decision for you makes healing impossible. Healing reflects our joint will. This is obvious when you consider what healing is for. Healing is the way in which the separation is overcome. Separation is overcome by union. (T-8.IV.4:all) & (T-8.IV.5:1-4)
5. Healing is the decision to waken to Love.
Healing is release from the fear of waking and the substitution of the decision to wake. The decision to wake is the reflection of the will to love, since all healing involves replacing fear with love. (T-8.IX.5:1-2)
6. Understand so-called sin is not Real; it is only a mistake, an error that is always correctable by our minds, with the help of the Holy Spirit. Every mistake by others is a call for Love.
The Holy Spirit cannot punish sin. Mistakes He recognizes, and would correct them all as God entrusted Him to do. But sin He knows not, nor can He recognize mistakes that cannot be corrected. For a mistake that cannot be corrected is meaningless to Him. Mistakes are for correction, and they call for nothing else. What calls for punishment must call for nothing. Every mistake must be a call for love. What, then, is sin? What could it be but a mistake you would keep hidden; a call for help that you would keep unheard and thus unanswered? (T-19.III.4:all)
7. Lay openly before the Holy Spirit all your suffering, hurt and pain, and let Him heal you, and restore your mind to the magnitude of God.
Do not hide suffering from His sight, but bring it gladly to Him. Lay before His eternal sanity all your hurt, and let Him heal you. Do not leave any spot of pain hidden from His Light, and search your mind carefully for any thoughts you may fear to uncover. For He will heal every little thought you have kept to hurt you and cleanse it of its littleness, restoring it to the magnitude of God. (T-13.III.7:3-6)
8. Undoing what the past has taught (including our egos, separation, fear, "getting," and all other illusions) is the Holy Spirit's function once we decide we are willing to relinquish these illusions.
As you share my [Jesus'] unwillingness to accept error in yourself and others, you must join the great crusade to correct it; listen to my voice [as in the Course], learn to undo error and act to correct it. The power to work miracles belongs to you. I will provide the opportunities to do them, but you must be ready and willing. (T-1.III.1:6-8)
Everything that stems from the ego is the natural outcome of its central belief, and the way to undo its results is merely to recognize that their source [ego-autonomy in the separation] is not natural, being out of accord with your true [God-given] nature. (T-11.V.5:2)
Nothing you have ever learned can help you understand the present, or teach you how to undo the past. Your past is what you have taught yourself. Let it all go. Do not attempt to understand any event or anything or anyone in its "light," for the darkness in which you try to see can only obscure. (T-14.XI.3:5-8)
Say this to yourself as sincerely as you can, remembering that the Holy Spirit will respond fully to your slightest invitation: I must have decided wrongly, because I am not at peace. I made the decision myself, but I can also decide otherwise. I want to decide otherwise, because I want to be at peace. I do not feel guilty, because the Holy Spirit will undo all the consequences of my wrong decision if I will let Him. I choose to let Him, by allowing Him to decide for God for me. (T-5.VII.6:6-11)
Questioning illusions is the first step in undoing them. The miracle, or the right answer, corrects them. (T-3.III.2:6-7)
9. Healing is the change of mind that the Holy Spirit seeks for us. He is in our minds.
Healing is the change of mind that the Holy Spirit in the patient's mind is seeking for him. And it is the Holy Spirit in the mind of the giver [the teacher/healer] Who gives the gift [of healing] to him. (M-6.4:3-4)
10. Do not plan because this is a preoccupation with setting up control of future happenings.
The mind engaged in planning for itself [by the ego] is occupied in setting up control of future happenings. It does not think that it will be provided for, unless it makes its own provisions. (W-pI.135.15:1-2)
What could you not accept, if you but knew that everything that happens, all events, past, present and to come, are gently planned by One Whose only purpose is your good? Perhaps you have misunderstood His plan, for He would never offer pain to you. But your defenses did not let you see His loving blessing shine in every step you ever took. While you made plans for death, He led you gently to eternal life. (W-pI.135.18:all)
Try not to shape this day as you believe would benefit you most. For you can not conceive of all the happiness that comes to you without your planning. Learn today. (W-pI.135.26:1-3)
11. Only forgiveness heals an unforgiveness. (Note sentence 3 carefully.) (See: forgive)
Sickness takes many forms, and so does unforgiveness. The forms of one but reproduce the forms of the other, for they are the same illusion. So closely is one translated into the other, that a careful study of the form a sickness takes will point quite clearly to the form of unforgiveness that it represents. Yet seeing this will not effect a cure. That is achieved by only one recognition; that only forgiveness heals an unforgiveness, and only an unforgiveness can possibly give rise to sickness of any kind. (P-2.VI.5:all)
12. Through healing learn Wholeness, and to remember God. To do this hand over all abilities to the Holy Spirit.
All abilities should therefore be given over to the Holy Spirit, Who understands how to use them properly. He uses them only for healing, because He knows you only as whole. By healing you learn of wholeness, and by learning of wholeness you learn to remember God. You have forgotten Him, but the Holy Spirit understands that your forgetting must be translated into a way of remembering. (T-7.IV.4:all)
13. The healing process of therapy/psychotherapy.
The process of psychotherapy, then, can be defined simply as forgiveness, for no healing can be anything else. The unforgiving are sick, believing they are unforgiven. The hanging-on to guilt, its hugging-close and sheltering, its loving protection and alert defense,--all this is but the grim refusal to forgive. "God may not enter here" the sick repeat, over and over, while they mourn their loss and yet rejoice in it. Healing occurs as a patient begins to hear the dirge he sings, and questions its validity. Until he hears it, he cannot understand that it is he who sings it to himself. To hear it is the first step in recovery. To question it must then become his choice. (P-2.VI.1:all)
It is in the instant that the therapist forgets to judge the patient that healing occurs. (P-3.II.6:1)
14. A therapist does not heal, he lets healing be.
A therapist does not heal; he lets healing be. He can point to darkness but he cannot bring light of himself, for light is not of him. Yet, being for him, it must also be for his patient. The Holy Spirit is the only Therapist. He makes healing clear in any situation in which He is the Guide. You can only let Him fulfill His function. He needs no help for this. (T-9.V.8:1-7)
15. Always perceive the healing of your brother as your own healing.
To perceive the healing of your brother as the healing of yourself is thus the way to remember God. (T-12.II.2:9)
Whatever the sickness, there is but one remedy. You will be made whole as you make [your brother] whole, for to perceive in sickness the appeal for health is to recognize in hatred the call for [Real] love. And to give a brother what he really wants is to offer it unto yourself, for your Father wills you to know your brother as yourself. Answer his call for love, and yours is answered. Healing is the Love of Christ for His Father and for Himself. (T-12.II.3:2-6)
16. One Holy Relationship can heal all pain.
This holy relationship, lovely in its innocence, mighty in strength, and blazing with a light far brighter than the sun that lights the sky you see, is chosen of your Father as a means for His Own plan. Be thankful that it serves yours not at all. Nothing entrusted to it can be misused, and nothing given it but will be used. This holy relationship has the power to heal all pain, regardless of its form. Neither you nor your brother alone can serve at all. Only in the joint will of you and your brother does healing lie. For here your healing is, and here will you accept Atonement. And in your healing is the Sonship healed because your and your brother's wills are joined [in Real Love]. (T-22.VI.4:all)
H. GOD AND HEALING, FATHER, SON, CHRIST
Sickness and separation must be healed by [Real] love and [Real] union. Nothing else can heal as God established healing. Without Him there is no healing, for there is no love. (S-3.III.5:7-9)
In his creation did his Father say, "You are beloved of Me and I of you forever. Be you perfect as Myself, for you can never be apart from Me." (T-28.VI.6.4)
I. LAWS OF GOD AND HEALING
When you heal, you are remembering the laws of God and forgetting the laws of the ego. (T-7.IV.2:6)
1. All sickness comes from separation. When the separation is denied, it goes. For it is gone as soon as the idea that brought it has been healed, and been replaced by sanity. (T-26.VII.2:1-3)
2. Guilt asks for punishment, and its request is granted. Not in truth, but in the world of shadows and illusions built on sin. The Son of God perceived what he would see because perception is a wish fulfilled. Perception changes, made to take the place of changeless knowledge. Yet is the truth unchanged. It cannot be perceived, but only known. (T-26.VII.3:1-6)
3. Perception's laws are opposite to truth, and what is true of knowledge is not true of anything that is apart from it. Yet has God given answer to the world of sickness, which applies to all its forms. God's answer is eternal, though it works in time, where it is needed. (T-26.VII.4:1-3)
4. Ideas leave not their source, and their effects but seem to be apart from them. Ideas are of the mind. What is projected out, and seems to be external to the mind, is not outside at all, but an effect of what is in, and has not left its source. (T-26.VII.4:7-9)
5. God's answer lies where the belief in sin must be, for only there [in mind] can its effects be utterly undone and without cause. Perception's laws must be reversed, because they are reversals of the laws of truth. The laws of truth forever will be true, and cannot be reversed; yet can be seen as upside down. And this must be corrected where the illusion of reversal lies. (T-26.VII.5:all)
6. It is impossible that one illusion be less amenable to the truth than are the rest. But it is possible that some are given greater value, and less willingly offered to truth for healing and for help. No illusion has any truth in it. (T-26.VII.6:1-3)
7. Not one [illusion] is true in any way, and all must yield with equal ease to what God gave as answer to them all. God's Will is one. And any wish that seems to go against His Will has no foundation in the truth. (T-26.VII.6:9-11)
8. Sin is not error, for it goes beyond correction to impossibility. Yet the belief that it is real has made some errors seem forever past the hope of healing, and the lasting grounds for hell. (T-26.VII.7:1-2)
Note: To further understand "sin" as merely a mistake that is healed by forgiveness refer to W-pII.359.all.
9. Forgiveness is the only function here, and serves to bring the joy this world denies to every aspect of God's Son where sin was thought to rule. Perhaps you do not see the role forgiveness plays in ending death and all beliefs that rise from mists of guilt. Sins are beliefs that you impose between your brother and yourself. (T-26.VII.8:5-7)
Forgiveness takes away what stands between your brother and yourself. It is the wish that you be joined with him, and not apart. We call it "wish" because it still conceives of other choices, and has not yet reached beyond the world of choice entirely. Yet is this wish in line with Heaven's state, and not in opposition to God's Will. Although it falls far short of giving you your full inheritance, it does remove the obstacles that you have placed between the Heaven where you are, and recognition of where and what you are. (T-26.VII.9:1-5)
10. Salvation, perfect and complete, asks but a little wish that what is true be true; a little willingness to overlook what is not there; a little sigh that speaks for Heaven as a preference to this world that death and desolation seem to rule. In joyous answer will creation rise within you, to replace the world you see with Heaven, wholly perfect and complete. What is forgiveness but a willingness that truth be true? What can remain unhealed and broken from a Unity Which holds all things within Itself? There is no sin. And every miracle is possible the instant that the Son of God perceives his wishes and the Will of God are one. (T-26.VII.10:all)
11. What is the Will of God? He wills His Son have everything. And this He guaranteed when He created him as everything. It is impossible that anything be lost, if what you have is what you are. This is the miracle by which creation became your function, sharing it with God. It is not understood apart from Him, and therefore has no meaning in this world. Here does the Son of God ask not too much, but far too little. (T-26.VII.11:1-7)
12. Let us consider what the error is, so it can be corrected, not protected. Sin is belief attack can be projected outside the mind where the belief arose. Here is the firm conviction that ideas can leave their source made real and meaningful. And from this error does the world of sin and sacrifice arise. This world is an attempt to prove your innocence, while cherishing attack. Its failure lies in that you still feel guilty, though without understanding why. Effects are seen as separate from their source, and seem to be beyond you to control or to prevent. What is thus kept apart can never join. (T-26.VII.12:all)
13. Cause and effect are one, not separate. God wills you learn what always has been true: That He created you as part of Him, and this must still be true because ideas leave not their source. Such is creation's law; that each idea the mind conceives but adds to its abundance, never takes away. This is as true of what is idly wished as what is truly willed, because the mind can wish to be deceived, but cannot make it be what it is not. And to believe ideas can leave their source is to invite illusions to be true, without success. For never will success be possible in trying to deceive the Son of God. (T-26.VII.13:all)
14. The miracle is possible when cause and consequence are brought together, not kept separate. The healing of effect without the cause can merely shift effects to other forms. And this is not release. God's Son could never be content with less than full salvation and escape from guilt. For otherwise he still demands that he must make some sacrifice, and thus denies that everything is his, unlimited by loss of any kind. (T-26.VII.14:1-5)
15. Illusions serves the purpose they were made to serve. And from their purpose they derive whatever meaning that they seem to have. God gave to all illusions that were made another purpose that would justify a miracle whatever form they took. In every miracle all healing lies, for God gave answer to them all as one. (T-26.VII.15:1-4)
16. The miracle but calls your ancient name, which you will recognize because the truth is in your memory. And to this name your brother calls for his release and yours. Heaven is shining on the Son of God. Deny him not, that you may be released. Each instant is the Son of God reborn until he chooses not to die again. (T-26.VII.16:1-5)
17. In crucifixion is redemption laid, for healing is not needed where there is no pain or suffering. Forgiveness is the answer to attack of any kind. So is attack deprived of its effects, and hate is answered in the name of love. To you to whom it has been given to save the Son of God from crucifixion and from hell and death, all glory be forever. For you have power to save the Son of God because his Father willed that it be so. And in your hands does all salvation lie, to be both offered and received as one. (T-26.VII.17:all)
18. To use the power God has given you as He would have it used is natural. It is not arrogant to be as He created you, nor to make use of what He gave to answer all His Son's mistakes and set him free. But it is arrogant to lay aside the power that He gave, and choose a little senseless wish instead of what He wills. The gift of God to you is limitless. There is no circumstance it cannot answer, and no problem which is not resolved within its gracious light. (T-26.VII.18:all)
19. Abide in peace, where God would have you be. And be the means whereby your brother finds the peace in which your wishes are fulfilled. Let us unite in bringing blessing to the world of sin and death. For what can save each one of us can save us all. There is no difference among the Sons of God. The unity [of Loving Oneness] that specialness denies will save them all, for what is one can have no specialness. And everything belongs to each of them. No wishes lie between a brother and his own. To get from one is to deprive them all. And yet to bless but one gives blessing to them all as one. (T-26.VII.19:all)
20. Your ancient name [the Son of God] belongs to everyone, as theirs to you. Call on your brother's name and God will answer, for on Him you call. Could He refuse to answer when He has already answered all who call on Him? A miracle can make no change at all. But it can make what always has been true be recognized by those who know it not; and by this little gift of truth but let to be itself, the Son of God allowed to be himself, and all creation freed to call upon the Name of God as one. (T-26.VII.20:all)
J. CRITERIA FOR COMPLETED HEALING
These criteria are arranged in alphabetical order because the attributes of completed healing have no hierarchical order or levels; they are all simply facets of a state of Loving Oneness within the Mind of God. Note that terms, such as "miracles" and "salvation," which imply that the process of healing is still in progress have not been included here. Also note that the full realization of any one of the following Ideas is sufficient for complete healing because the others will automatically be simultaneously Realized.
1. Communication, communion
When you return to your original form of communication with God by direct revelation, the need for miracles is over. (T-1.I.46:3)
When you have become willing to hide nothing, you will not only be willing to enter into communion but will also understand peace and joy. (T-1.IV.1:5)
The Son of God is egoless. What can he know of madness and the death of God, when he abides in Him? What can he know of sorrow and of suffering, when he lives in eternal joy? What can he know of fear and punishment, of sin and guilt, of hatred and attack, when all there is surrounding him is everlasting peace, forever conflict-free and undisturbed, in deepest silence and tranquility? (Commentary 12 on "What is the Ego?" W-pII.12.3:all)
3. Free will, free, freedom
Everything God created is like Him. Extension, as undertaken by God, is similar to the inner radiance that the children of the Father inherit from Him. Its real source is internal. This is as true of the Son as of the Father. In this sense the creation includes both the creation of the Son by God, and the Son's creations when his mind is healed. This requires God's endowment of the Son with free will, because all loving creation is freely given in one continuous line, in which all aspects are of the same order. (T-2.I.2:3-8)
Freedom is the only gift you can offer to God's Sons, being an acknowledgement of what they are and what He [the Father] is. Freedom is creation, because it is [Real] love. Whom you seek to imprison you do not love. (T-8.IV.8:1-3)
4. Glad, gladness
Healing is a thought by which two minds perceive their oneness and become glad. This gladness calls to every part of the Sonship to rejoice with them, and lets God go out into them and through them. (T-5.I.1:1-2)
5. Happy, happiness
To heal is to make happy. (T-5.IN.1:1)
You are guilty or guiltless, bound or free, unhappy or happy. (T-14.III.4:6)
"I rest in God." This thought will bring to you the rest and quiet, peace and stillness, and the safety and the happiness you seek. (W-pI.109.2:1-2)
Healing always produces harmony, because it proceeds from integration. It is predictable because it can be counted on. Everything that is of God can be counted on, because everything of God is wholly real. (T-7.V.6:6-8)
Endless the harmony, and endless, too, the joyous concord of the Love They [the Father and the Son] give forever to Each Other. (S-1.IN.1:3)
7. Holy relationships
This holy relationship, lovely in its innocence, mighty in strength, and blazing with a light far brighter than the sun that lights the sky you see, is chosen of your Father as a means for His Own plan. (T-22.VI.4:1)
This holy relationship has the power to heal all pain, regardless of its form. (T-22.VI.4:4)
Now in the hands made gentle by His touch, the Holy Spirit lays a picture of a different you. It is a picture of a body still, for what you really are cannot be seen nor pictured. Yet this one has not been used for purpose of attack, and therefore never suffered pain at all. It witnesses to the eternal truth that you cannot be hurt, and points beyond itself to both your innocence and his. Show this unto your brother, who will see that every scar is healed, and every tear is wiped away in laughter and in love. (T-27.I.5:1-5)
9. Join, joining
It is this joining Him [the Holy Spirit] in a united purpose that makes this purpose [of freeing yourself and your brother from ego as one] real, because you make it whole. And this is healing. The body is healed because you came without it, and joined the Mind in which all healing rests. (T-19.I.2:5-7)
10. Joy, joyous
God thanks His healers, for He knows the Cause of healing is Himself, His Love, His Son, restored as His completion and returned to share with Him creation's holy joy. (S-3.IV.3:3)
God's messengers are joyous, and their joy heals sorrow and despair. (W-pI.100.4:3)
11. Knowledge, Know
Knowledge is timeless, because certainty is not questionable. You know when you have ceased to ask questions. (T-3.III.2:10-11)
The sick are healed as you let go all thoughts of sickness, and the dead arise when you let thoughts of [Real] life replace all thoughts you ever held of death. (W-pI.132.8:4)
When I [Jesus] said "I am with you always," I meant it literally. I am not absent to anyone in any situation. Because I am always with you, you are the way, the truth and the life. (T-7.III.1:7-9)
The light that belongs to you is the light of joy. (T-5.IN.1:4)
Yet God has kept the spark alive [in each of us] so that the Rays can never be completely forgotten. If you but see the little spark you will learn of the greater light, for the Rays are there unseen. Perceiving the spark will heal, but knowing the light will create. (T-10.IV.8:2-4)
What occurred within the instant that [Real] love entered in without attack will stay with you forever. Your healing will be one of its effects, as will your brother's. (T-27.V.11:4-5)
God thanks you for your healing, for He knows it is a gift of love unto His Son, and therefore is it given unto Him. (T-27.V.11:9)
15. Messenger of God
You are God's messenger today. You bring His happiness to all you look upon; His peace to everyone who looks on you and sees His message in your happy face. (W-pI.100.6:4-5)
16. Now, the present holy instant
The peace of God passeth your understanding only in the past. Yet here it is, and you can understand it now. God loves His Son forever, and His Son returns his Father's Love forever. The real world is the way that leads you to remembrance of the one thing [your One Reality in God] that is wholly true and wholly yours. (T-13.VII.8:1-4)
In the holy instant you recognize the idea of [Real] love in you, and unite this idea with the Mind that thought it, and could not relinquish it. By holding it within itself, there is no loss. The holy instant thus becomes a lesson in how to hold all of your brothers in your mind, experiencing not loss but completion. From this it follows you can only give. And this is [Real] love, for this [perfect Loving Oneness] alone is natural under the laws of God. In the holy instant the laws of God prevail, and only they have meaning. (T-15.VI.5:3-8)
17. One, Oneness
For healing will be one or not at all, its oneness being where the healing is. (T-28.VII.2:5)
No miracle can ever be denied to those who know that they are one with God. No thought of theirs but has the power to heal all forms of suffering in anyone, in times gone by and times as yet to come, as easily as in the ones who walk beside them now. Their thoughts are timeless, and apart from distance as apart from time. (W-pI.124.6:all)
18. Peace, Tranquility
For [Real] love has come, and healed the world by giving it Christ's peace. (W-pII.305.1:4)
The peace of God is everything I want. The peace of God is my one goal; the aim of all my living here, the end I seek, my purpose and my function and my life, while I abide where I am not at home. (W-pI.205.1:2-3)
Light is tranquility, and in that peace is [spiritual] vision given us, and we can see [truly]. (W-pI.108.7:5)
19. Perfect, Perfection
Deep within you is everything that is perfect, ready to radiate through you and out into the world. It will cure all sorrow and pain and fear and loss because it will heal the mind that thought these things were real, and suffered out of its allegiance to them. You can never be deprived of your perfect holiness because its Source goes with you wherever you go. (W-pI.41.3:all) & (W-pI.41.4:1)
You are a perfect creation, and should experience awe only in the presence of the Creator of perfection. The miracle is therefore a sign of love among equals. (T-1.II.3:3-4)
20. Real, Reality
Being is completely without these distinctions [judgments]. It is a state in which the mind is in communication with everything that is real [the Kingdom]. To whatever extent you permit this state to be curtailed you are limiting your sense of your own reality, which becomes total only by recognizing all reality in the glorious context of its real relationship to you. This is your reality. Do not desecrate it or recoil from it. It is your real home, your real temple and your real Self. (T-4.VII.4:3-8)
Only the healed mind can experience revelation with lasting effect, because revelation is an experience of pure joy. (T-5.I.1:3)
Your resurrection is your reawakening. I [Jesus] am the model for rebirth, but rebirth itself is merely the dawning on your mind of what is already in it. God placed it there Himself, and so it is true forever. (T-6.I.7:1-3)
Reality is the only safety. (T-9.I.7:7)
There is no fear in perfect love because it knows no sin, and it must look on others as on itself. Looking with charity within, what can it fear without? The innocent see safety, and the pure in heart see God within His Son, and look unto the Son to lead them to the Father. (T-20.III.11:3-5)
24. Sanity, Sane
Being sane, the mind heals the body because it has been healed. (T-5.V.5:2)
Sanity is wholeness, and the sanity of your brothers is yours. (T-5.VII.2:8)
God will never cease to love His Son, and His Son will never cease to love Him. That was the condition of His Son's creation, fixed forever in the Mind of God. To know that is sanity. (T-10.V.10:6-8)
25. Second Coming of Christ
The Second Coming of Christ means nothing more than the end of the ego's rule and the healing of the mind. I [Jesus] was created like you in the first [Coming], and I have called you to join with me in the second. (T-4.IV.10:2-3)
The mind we share is shared by all our brothers, and as we see them truly they will be healed. (T-7.V.11:2)
How holy are the healed! For in their sight their brothers share their healing and their love. (S-3.IV.1:1-2)
27. Son; I Am God's Son
I am God's Son, complete and healed and whole, shining in the reflection of His Love. (Commentary 14 on "What am I?" W-pII.14.1:1)
Spirit is the Thought of God which He created like Himself. The unified spirit is God's one Son, or Christ. (C-1.1:3-4)
It [the mind] is therefore described in the Course as if it has two parts; spirit and ego. Spirit is the part that is still in contact with God through the Holy Spirit, Who abides in this part but sees the other part as well. (C-1.2:4) & (C-1.3:1)
Spirit am I, a holy Son of God, free of all limits, safe and healed and whole, free to forgive, and free to save the world. (W-pI.97.7:2)
29. The Thought of God
The Thought of God created you. It left you not, nor have you ever been apart from it an instant. It belongs to you. By it you live. It is your Source of life, holding you one with it, and everything is one with you because it left you not. The Thought of God protects you, cares for you, makes soft your resting place and smooth your way, lighting your mind with happiness and love. Eternity and everlasting life shine in your mind, because the Thought of God has left you not, and still abides with you. (W-pI.165.2:all)
Ask [God] with desire [for Heaven]. You need not be sure that you request the only thing you want. But when you have received, you will be sure you have the treasure you have always sought. What would you then exchange for it? What would induce you now to let it fade away from your ecstatic vision? For this sight proves that you have exchanged your blindness for the seeing eyes of Christ; your mind has come to lay aside denial, and accept the Thought of God as your inheritance [i.e., the Son, the Christ, the Self]. (W-pI.165.5:all)
31. Whole, Wholeness
Yet healing itself is consistent, since only consistency is conflict-free, and only the conflict-free are whole. (T-7.V.5:3)
healer who is unhealed: Two sections of the Course
describe the "unhealed healer" in some detail: (T-9.V.all) and
(P-2.VII.all). Both sections also state the true nature of real healing and how
to accomplish it. Note that the term "healer," in this context, may
include all kinds of teachers, therapists, psychotherapists and
The Course succinctly states that the unhealed healer not only operates out of ego but that he also (perhaps unwittingly) seeks to fulfill the ego's plan of false forgiveness. The unhealed healer confuses himself with God because he does not realize the Holy Spirit is the only Therapist, and that in a holy relationship of therapist/patient, the therapist lets healing be. Healing is the re-awakening of the Light of God in the one's Self, as well as in the student/client/patient. This is only accomplished through true forgiveness in the Atonement process of letting the undone ego go.
health: Both our physical and mental health depend on the extent to which we remain as God created us as His Sons, as Minds within His Mind. Once we lay aside all ego-purposes, including those we assign to other people, the body's health is guaranteed. A healthy body in a Healthy Mind becomes a serviceable instrument through which that Mind can operate until the body's usefulness is over. This condition of health is referred to in the Course as a "happy dream" of perfect health, freedom and safety. In other places the Course describes health as inner peace, united purpose, and as the natural state of everything when we leave all interpretation [of our perceptions] to the Holy Spirit. Always remember the body is not the source of its own health.
If you remain as God created you, appearances cannot replace the truth, health cannot turn to sickness, nor can death be substitute for life, or fear for love. (W-pI.110.3:1)

Heaven: There is no Real Life outside of Heaven
because Heaven is
God's Perfect Mind together with Its perfect attributes, and His Thoughts or
Sons. God Knows only Perfect Love, Peace, Joy and Freedom as attributes of His
Mind-as-such. As the Creator He also Knows all the innumerable
"pieces" of His Mind-as-such He has individuated as Sons, each of whom
is "encapsulated" in Love and held in His Mind by an eternal Thought.
Thus God is the Cause and His Sons are His Effects who Live only as Minds within
the Heaven of His Mind. All of the Sonship, then, not only has its Being in the
Heaven that is God's Mind, but it also fully shares God's Mind with Him
in complete Awareness and Loving Oneness. All the Sons Know each other
completely and they Know God completely, just as God Knows each of His Perfect
Sons as He created them within Himself.
Outside of Heaven (i.e., the Reality of God's Mind including His Thoughts or Sons) there is nothing and that nothingness includes all perceptions, forms, separated states, projections, fears, illnesses, bodies, death, beliefs, this world, egos, idols, sacrifices, suffering, loss, specialness, special relationships, sins, conflict, change, errors, possessions, aggression, time, differences, inventions, pains, pleasures, successes, failures, waking dreams, sleeping dreams, polarities, the laws of this world, and so on and on. All these, the Course teaches us, are what Heaven is NOT. Heaven cannot be found here in this world of form, ego and separation, and any such search is a waste of time.
We can, however, want all of Heaven and only Heaven, and seek for it within our eternal Minds-as-such where Heaven is. The ego will use every one of its tricks, devices, beliefs and distractions to sabotage this reunification with our Father and our Creations (all our brothers). But the ego is nothing, and it can be easily relinquished if we firmly decide to, (a) want only God and His Heaven, (b) lovingly forgive everyone for everything we thought they did, and, (c) dismantle our egos (see: forgive) in concert with the Holy Spirit. The quotations below have been selected as representative references which will help us hasten along our journey Home to the Heaven that is God.
What and where it is Heaven?
The Kingdom of Heaven is the dwelling place of the Son of God, who left not his Father and dwells not apart from Him. Heaven is not a place nor a condition. It is merely an awareness of perfect oneness, and the knowledge that there is nothing else; nothing outside this oneness, and nothing else within. (T-18.VI.1:4-6)
There is no life [Life] outside of Heaven. Where God created life, there life must be. In any state apart from Heaven [pseudo-] life is illusion. At best it seems like life; at worst, like death. (T-23.II.19:1-4)
The Kingdom of Heaven is you. What else but you [as His Son] did the Creator create, and what else but you is His Kingdom? (T-4.III.1:4-5)
hell: It is our egos and only our egos that make
our lives here a hell, and that is the only hell there is. The traditional hell
of many religions exists (like everything else) only in our own minds and
nowhere else. Our (false) beliefs in separation from God, specialness, fear,
attack, sickness, sin, guilt, judgment, condemnation, pain, punishment and death are
hell. Are not our wars, diseases, insanity, disasters, crimes, accidents,
burnings and wrecks all hell? Even our fictional fantasies and novels and
films are almost entirely preoccupied with hellish horror, illness, pain,
killings, wars, disasters (how many millions saw "Titanic"?) and
warped or doomed special relationships. Why? Because we are fascinated by it; we
"love" it! And every bit of it stems from our minds, our
separated ego-minds to be precise.
The ego even manages to turn everything upside down with our inverted belief that our hell here is Heaven, and that Heaven itself is to be feared as either oblivion or boring. We all "say" we want Love, but mostly it is the passing excitement and thrills (even in "love") that we seek. And all we make is hell!
This is a world of polarities, of opposites and sooner or later the ego's pendulum swings us from pleasure to pain, from "good" to bad, from "health" to sickness, and from "love" to hate.
Every time we attack anyone, however slightly, we again crucify [make hell for] a Son of God, and that attack also attacks the same Christ inside us because God's Christ-Son is One.
To the ego the goal is death, which is its end. But to the Holy Spirit the goal is life [with God], which has no end. (T-15.I.2:8-9) The belief in hell is inescapable to those who identify with the ego. Their nightmares and their fears are all associated with it. The ego teaches that hell is in the future, for this is what all its teaching is directed to. Hell is its goal. (T-15.I.4:1-4)
help, helpers: God is the Source of all Help for
those Sons who have separated from Him. God helps us through His Holy Spirit,
Who, in turn can communicate with us either directly or through any Son of God
as a helper. These helpers are given to us in many forms, Jesus being the one
who saw the face of Christ in all his brothers, who remembered God, and who was
established as the leader in carrying out God's Plan.
The Course, however, contains many helpful ideas and techniques.
1. GOD'S HELP: Yet the Son is helpless without the Father, Who alone is his Help. (T-10.V.4:4)
Only loving thoughts are recognized, and because no one is without your help, the Help of God goes with you everywhere. (T-11.VIII.10:2) God turns to you for help to save the world. (M-29.8:2)
2. THE HOLY SPIRIT'S HELP: The Holy Spirit will help you reinterpret everything that you perceive as fearful, and teach you that only what is loving is true. (T-5.IV.1:3)
If you will listen to His Voice you will know that you cannot either hurt or be hurt, and that many need your blessing to help them hear this for themselves. (T-6.I.19:2)
3. JESUS' HELP: I [Jesus] cannot unite your will with God's for you, but I can erase all misperceptions from your mind if you will bring it under my guidance. Only your misperceptions stand in your way. Without them your choice is certain. Sane perception induces sane choosing. I cannot choose for you, but I can help you make your own right choice. (T-3.IV.7:7-11)
4. ADDITIONAL HELPFUL QUOTATIONS ON "HELP": You can use your body best to help you enlarge your perception so you can achieve real vision [the vision of the inner Christ], of which the physical eye is incapable. (T-1.VII.2:4) The removal of blocks [in your mind], then, is the only way to guarantee help and healing. Help and healing are the normal expressions of a mind that is working through the body, but not in it. (T-8.VII.11:1-2) Love always answers, being unable to deny a call for help, or not to hear the cries of pain that rise to it from every part of this strange world you made but do not want. (T-13.VII.4:3)
helplessness: Our helplessness or powerlessness
is a direct effect of our separation from God which, in turn, resulted in our
formation of the ego or "little self," which is helpless. But
even this relatively powerless state of ego-identification was (and is) not far
enough away from God and Spirit so (in our dreamworld) we invented the body as a
focus for our specialness and weakness. Now, the body has become our central
identification and interest, and it is, indeed, helpless.
Because egos and bodies are based on fear (another of our weird inventions) instead of Love, we were able to introduce the insane, dark ideas of sin, guilt, attack, pain, hurt, war, condemnation, judgment and punishment as compensations and projections to cover up our sense of helplessness.
However, naked fear, pain, sin, guilt and helplessness were too much for us to handle (in our willful isolation from God), therefore, as a further cover we added a variety of diversions and distractions called idols, pleasures, entertainment, thrills, and (in our final mockery of God's Love) special relationships. These body-oriented beguilements of all kinds (in combination with our projection of guilt and blame) usually keep us quite blind to our inherent helplessness.
Only the complete reunion of our Minds (forget the body) with the Mind of our Father and Creator will restore to us the Real Power which He has given us of Himself. God's Strength is our Strength and it emanates from Universal Love.
Depression is an inevitable consequence of separation [from God]. So are anxiety, worry, a deep sense of helplessness, misery, suffering and intense fear of loss. (W-pI.41.1:2-3)
Helpless he stands [in his dreamworld], a victim to a dream conceived and cherished by a separate mind. (T-27.VII.8:4)
heritage: Our heritage, in the context of the Course, includes all that has been given us by God at the time of our creation as a Mind-Being within His Mind-as-such. In this sense we have received all the attributes, characteristics and qualities of our Father including Peace, Love, Truth, Joy, Freedom, His Will, Knowledge, and Life Itself. All this heritage we still possess and much more. Note, though, that this Living Mind heritage does not include bodies, anything physical, or any forms, all of which we made to expedite the separation from God and the Heaven that is His Mind.
Could any part of God be without His Love, and could any part of His Love be contained? God is your heritage, because His one gift is [literally] Himself. How can you give except like Him if you would know His gift to you? (T-11.I.7:1-3)
God has given you a place in His Mind that is yours forever. (T-11.I.6:1)
hero of the dream--the body: In Chapter 27 the Course devotes a whole section (VIII) to "The Hero of the Dream." This "hero" is the perceived physical/biological body with which the ego has us identify. Thus we think we are physical bodies born of a mother and father (who are also bodies) into a physical world where we engage in a short physical life devoted to security and safety, comfort and pleasure, adornment and maintenance, all of which are preoccupations with the body. We also usually project all blame in this world onto other physical bodies and want to attack them for their failures in meeting our needs and demands on them. By shifting the focus of relationships onto physical bodies the crafty ego manages to hide its own key role. But all this is a laughable farce, a series of silly soap operas, which we can give (with forgiveness) to the Holy Spirit and let them go! All our brothers, like ourselves, are Sons of God whose only True Reality is the Mind of God. (See also: body, dream, forgive, identify)
The body is the central figure in the dreaming of the world. There is no dream without it, nor does it exist without the dream in which it acts as if it were a person to be seen and be believed. It takes the central place in every dream, which tells the story of how it was made by other bodies, born into the world outside the body, lives a little while and dies, to be united in the dust with other bodies dying like itself. In the brief time allotted it to live, it seeks for other bodies as its friends and enemies. Its safety is its main concern. Its comfort is its guiding rule. It tries to look for pleasure, and avoid the things that would be hurtful. Above all, it tries to teach itself its pains and joys are different and can be told apart. (T-27.VIII.1:all) The "hero" of this dream will never change, nor will its purpose. (T-27.VIII.3:2)
hesitate: As students of the Course and Children of God we should not hesitate to give as much consistent effort as we can to understand the lessons, undo the separation and illusion and fulfill the At-one-ment as rapidly as possible. Any hesitation on our part is a decision to procrastinate, to prolong our sleeping state and thus delay salvation not only for ourselves but all our brothers. (See also: delay, procrastination)
hide, hidden: If we hide anything of any
in our minds we cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven because the Mind of God
(which is Heaven) is completely open and unified. Therefore nothing must
be hidden away in dark corners, barricaded behind defenses, or suppressed out of
sight. Everything must be brought freely and openly to the Holy Spirit
and given to Him to take, thus leaving our Minds pure and clear.
There are two general types of material we, as egos, endeavor to hide.
The first type comprises all the "sins," errors, shameful acts, guilty thoughts and hurtful deeds we think we have committed in the past, some of which may seem to be continuing in the present. All of these are false illusions which in Reality did not happen. However, we must not hide even a single one of these so-called sins, but, rather, bring them up into the Light, give them to the Holy Spirit, forgive all those involved, and come to Love everyone, everywhere. Only then will they disappear into the nothingness from whence they came.
The second class of erroneous ideas, beliefs and attitudes we "hide" are those that, as egos, we falsely associate (in one way or another) with who we imagine God is. For example, we may "hide" our fear of God because we incorrectly think of Him as an Authoritarian Judge Who will punish us. Of course this fear also makes us hide from God. We, as egos, also fear the Love we have buried. We also hide from both it and the Truth because if it came into everyday consciousness the ego would disappear, a fate we cannot tolerate. Our ego's idols, such as wealth, special relationships and status, keep hidden deep in our Minds our Real Identities as Sons of God, while our grievances hide our Light. Our sicknesses distort and hide all Reality just as our specialness hides the Christ in us. Even the miracles the Holy Spirit gives us are hidden from our sight by our foolish fantasies and daily dreams of this world.
Every one of these hidden erroneous concepts must be raised to the Light of understanding and let go, so that the Voice for God can speak to us of His Truth. (For ego-dismantling see: forgive) (Refer also to: T-13.III.6&7)
A. THE EGO ENDEAVORS TO HIDE THE DARK SHADOW SIDE OF ITSELF.
But if they [us as little children] hide their nightmares they will keep them. It is easy to help an uncertain child, for he recognizes that he does not understand what his perceptions mean. Yet you believe that you do understand yours. Little child, you are hiding your head under the cover of the heavy blankets you have laid upon yourself. You are hiding your nightmares in the darkness of your own false certainty, and refusing to open your eyes and look at them. (T-12.II.4:3-7)
B. DEEPER STILL, UNDER THE SHADOWS OF SIN, FEAR, GUILT AND ATTACK, THE EGO HIDES TRUTH, GOD, SPIRIT AND THE CHRIST-SELF, SURROUNDING THEM WITH FEAR.
All that is needful is to train our minds to overlook all little senseless aims, and to remember that our goal is God. His memory is hidden in our minds [-as-such], obscured but by our pointless little goals which offer nothing, and do not exist. (W-pII.258.1:1-2)
Therefore, you have used the world to cover your [Real] love, and the deeper you go into the blackness of the ego's foundation, the closer you come to the Love that is hidden there. (T-13.III.4:4)
For still deeper than the ego's foundation, and much stronger than it will ever be, is your intense and burning love of God and His for you. This is what you really want to hide. (T-13.III.2:8-9)
C. THE MEANS AND METHODS FOR HEALING THE SPLIT MIND AND FOR BRINGING ALL THE DARK SHADOW, AS WELL AS THE REALITY IT HIDES, UP INTO FULL AWARENESS AND LIGHT.
God hides nothing from His Son, even though His Son would hide himself. Yet the Son of God cannot hide his glory, for God wills him to be glorious, and gave him the light that shines in him. You will never lose your way, for God leads you. (T-11.III.5:1-3)
Do not hide suffering from His [the Holy Spirit's] sight, but bring it gladly to Him. (T-13.III.7:3)
Conflict must be resolved. It cannot be evaded, set aside, denied, disguised, seen somewhere else, called by another name, or hidden by deceit of any kind, if it would be escaped. It must be seen exactly as it is, where it is thought to be, in the reality which has been given it, and with the purpose that the mind accorded it. For only then are its defenses lifted, and the truth can shine upon it as it disappears. (W-pII.333.1:all)
hierarchy: A hierarchical system is one which
contains multiple graded levels or ranks, wherein the people or principles that
are higher, control, influence or organize those immediately below them. Some
hierarchical systems with which most of us are familiar are government, the
courts, businesses, the military, the food chain and pecking orders. Almost all
hierarchies involve some kind of fear-based domination, even those few that are
There are no hierarchies in Reality because there is no fear, or domination, or control, or even influence in Heaven. Only in dreamworlds of illusion are hierarchies possible, because in our fear-based separation we have "cut ourselves off" from God's Peace, Light, Happiness, Knowledge and Loving Oneness. God is our Creator, our Father, but He gave us Everything of Himself including the Perfect Freedom to "do" or "be" whatever we wish in our illusions, our fantastic "waking" dreams. Nevertheless, in Reality, we are still changeless, perfect Mind-as-such Beings; it is impossible to change God or what He creates like Himself.
Note that any "influence" that the Holy Spirit, Jesus or other guides and masters may have in our lives is always by our invitation only and that they immediately "back off" the moment we indicate we wish them to leave us alone, and this non-interference applies even when our wish is not conscious.
Hierarchies of illusions in this world demonstrate differences and preferences, not Reality, and therefore we should eliminate all hierarchies from our minds including those in which we prefer to see ourselves as victims.
hinder, hindrances: Nothing this world believes
is true, and therefore our multitude of false beliefs here can hinder our
progress in dismantling our egos and with Jesus' help releasing the strength of
God into everything we think and do. Special relationships hinder our Completion
of God because they prevent our re-unification with Him by distracting us
through our projections onto others.
Our dream of (and belief in) the illusion of time is a hindrance to our release from this world of illusion, and the Course devotes a whole lengthy section to this "little hindrance." We can easily release ourselves from this "time of terror," this "senseless maze," this "fearful instant," by forgiving everyone the past we hold against them.
hint: This word, which is used in several different contexts in the Course, lets us know how vast, how limitless is the Mind of God and His Love for us. Even the faintest hint of Reality would drive our egos from our minds. We are asked to listen to our own inner Spirit as we can catch a hint of our ancient state of being awake in Heaven, and remember how lovely was the song of Union, the hymn of Love the Son of God sings to his Father still. This is one of the most beautiful poetic passages in the Course. (Refer to: T-21.I.6-10:all)
Even the faintest hint of your reality literally drives the ego from your mind, because you will give up all investment in it. (T-9.VIII.4:2)
Listen,--perhaps you catch a hint of an ancient state not quite forgotten; dim, perhaps, and yet not altogether unfamiliar, like a song whose name is long forgotten, and the circumstances in which you heard completely unremembered. Not the whole song has stayed with you, but just a little wisp of melody, attached not to a person or a place or anything particular. But you remember, from just this little part, how lovely was the song, how wonderful the setting where you heard it, and how you loved those who were there and listened with you. (T-21.I.6:all) This is the vision of the Son of God, whom you know well. Here is the sight of him who knows his Father. Here is the memory of what you are; a part of this, with all of it within, and joined to all as surely as all is joined in you. Accept the vision that can show you this, and not the body. You know the ancient song, and know it well. Nothing will ever be as dear to you as is this ancient hymn of love the Son of God sings to his Father still. (T-21.I.9:all)
hold: Although there are numerous occurrences of "hold" in the Course, two stand out as truly memorable. The first occurs in the middle of the finest description of a "stilling-the-mind" meditation ever written. The second further describes, equally eloquently, how forgiveness saves God's Son from death by offering Christ's Love to him, with the result that we reunite in timelessness with all creation to sing our ceaseless song unto God.
We learn the way today. It is as sure as Love itself, to which it carries us. For its simplicity avoids the snares the foolish convolutions of the world's apparent reasoning but serve to hide. Simply do this: Be still, and lay aside all thoughts of what you are and what God is; all concepts you have learned about the world; all images you hold about yourself. Empty your mind of everything it thinks is either true or false, or good or bad, of every thought it judges worthy, and all the ideas of which it is ashamed. Hold onto nothing. Do not bring with you one thought the past has taught, nor one belief you ever learned before from anything. Forget this world, forget this Course, and come with wholly empty hands unto your God. (W-pI.189.6:2-4) & (W-pI.189.7:all)
holier: Holy means spiritual, and so
"holier" is a comparative term which suggests some people are more
spiritual than others and perhaps, less spiritual than the holiest. All
these comparisons and all degrees of holiness (i.e., spirituality) are debunked
in the Course. There is only one level of Spirituality and that is God,
in Whose Holiness we all participate equally with Him as His Gift.
Thus we can never be any holier or less holy than any of our brothers. Each one of us is a Son of God who is a piece of the Mind of God eternally and like Him in every way except that He created us and we did not create Him.
The only time "holier" can be legitimately used is when describing our attitudes and actions towards a brother in the sense that the less the ego has to do with our relationships the holier those relationships (and their personal interactions) become. Therefore, as Jesus says, "The holiest of all spots on earth is where an ancient hatred has become a present love." (Full quotation below) (See also: holy, forgive, mind, spirit)
The holiest of all the spots on earth is where an ancient hatred has become a present love. And They come quickly to the living temple, where a home for Them has been set up. There is no place in Heaven holier. And They have come to dwell within the temple offered Them, to be Their resting place as well as yours. (T-26.IX.6:1-4)
holy, holiness: These traditional words (as used in the Course) are best translated as "spiritual" and "spirituality." The word "holy" originated from the Old English word "hal" which meant "whole" and was first used as a translation of the Latin words for "sacred" and "sacrosanct." In this spiritual sense, then, holy means, "belonging to or coming wholly from God." Note that "whole" also stems from "hal" and includes the meaning of "complete and perfect health." Putting all this together we can say "holy" describes anything that is sacred, spiritual, whole, complete and perfect because it is of God. The adjective "holy" is used over 1600 times in the Course.
holy instant: In the holy instant we remember God, and we experience our Selves as perfectly Free. For a brief time we awaken gently in the Mind of God. A holy instant may last seconds, minutes, hours or days; it is to be found, potentially, in this instant now, and every instant, now. There are several synonyms for "holy instant" that are used in spiritual literature: present moment, right now, be here now, now is the only time there is.
We can claim the holy instant at anytime and anywhere we
want it. Without our private ego-thoughts we could live forever in the holy
instant in perfect open communication
with God and the Sonship. In the holy instant we accept God's Will and our will
as the single Will that governs all thought. However, it is important to
realize that we do not need to try to remove all fear and hatred from
our minds before we approach the holy instant. It is the purpose
of the holy instant to allow the Holy Spirit to take our fears, hatreds and
guilt from us if we are willing to relinquish them to Him. We tend to be
convinced we are not worthy of experiencing a holy instant of Love,
Light, Peace, Joy, Freedom and Expansion in God, but we must remember the
preparation for the holy instant belongs to the Holy Spirit and our part is only
to want it and release ourselves to Him; to place ourselves in His care.
The effects of the holy instant will help us correct our mistakes and
free us from their results.
In the holy instant we experience a release from the physical restrictions of the body and from our preoccupation with the things of time and space. But the holy instant is not an "out of body" experience, such as some psychic people may have; it is more an awareness of Mind-as-Self expanding limitlessly in the Mind of God. Thus in the holy instant of Mind-Expansion we see no past and future; we Live only in the present moment, now.
Another sure and certain experience we have during the holy instant is our reunification with all our brothers (i.e., the whole Sonship) as our Minds all join as the One Christ in God. But to have this instant we have to desire that it be all that there is and want nothing else.
Some people experience the holy instant as a flooding of their Minds with tremendous Light, while others may experience a great outpouring of Limitless Love for everyone, everywhere. Still others may experience the Perfect Peace that passes all understanding, or the ecstatic Happiness and Joyful Laughter in the Heaven that is the Mind of God. And all of these can be experienced at the same time in the holy instant.
God has given us the holy instant along with Himself and all His Attributes and Thoughts. All these gifts of God were given us by Him at our creation and we can now receive them again during the holy instant because they have never left us. Indeed, Heaven smiles on us in the holy instant during which we love our brothers in one holy relationship.
In the holy instant, in which you see yourself as bright with freedom, you will remember God. (T-15.I.10:7)
An instant offered to the Holy Spirit is offered to God on your behalf, and in that instant you will awaken gently in Him. (T-15.II.1:6)
The holy instant is this instant and every instant. (T-15.IV.1:3)
You can claim the holy instant any time and anywhere you want it. (T-15.IV.4:4)
You could live forever in the holy instant, beginning now and reaching to eternity, but for a very simple reason. (T-15.IV.6:3)
The simple reason, simply stated, is this: The holy instant is a time in which you receive and give perfect communication. (T-15.IV.6:5)
holy relationship: The holy relationship is such
an integral part of the course's curriculum that we need to understand clearly
both what it is, and what it is not.
Obviously, a holy relationship is not a special "love" relationship of the kind we separated ones have, in this world, with the people close to us. Nor is it a special hate relationship. Both of these special relationships use people, keep us out of Heaven, consist of ritual and form, and rest on a twisted foundation of sin, guilt and attack. All the special "love" relationship does is try to offset the hate inherent in it and drive that hate underground. Furthermore the special love relationship strives to exclude other people from it whereas the holy relationship always extends its Love to include everyone everywhere. God knows no special love.
Thus all our holy relationships are Really extensions of our Loving Oneness Relationship with God, a Relationship which includes all our brothers in the Sonship universally. God's Son is One and whom God has joined in the Sonship the ego cannot separate. Eternal Happiness is God's purpose for all holy relationships.
The Holy Spirit is the key to purifying all our relationships in this world of ego so that they may become holy. We offer our relationships to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to enter. He will accept our invitation and replace our ego's insane goals with His goal of holiness. Such relationships are now reborn as holy, and in a truly holy relationship its holiness goes with it everywhere. A holy relationship with the Holy Spirit in it accesses the Real World of Love and of happy dreams which lead to full Awakening in God. Through our holy relationships thousands will rise to Heaven with us, and much time will be saved.
Jesus is with us in the spiritual union of our holy relationships. Note that each person in a holy relationship has looked within and seen no lack; he sees only Completion which he extends to others, whole as himself as Self. We cease to see differences because we see, with Christ's Vision, only Sons of God we Love.
We will always meet those numerous people with whom we have the potential to form a holy relationship. Each of us also has special gifts which, when nurtured in a holy relationship, can be used beneficially in a given teaching-learning situation by all advanced teachers of God. All teaching-learning situations have the goal of becoming holy relationships. Thus we strive to have holy relationships with everyone we meet or know.
Remember, though, that the Holy Spirit's temple is not a body but a holy relationship, and that bodies can never be the seat of Love. The Holy Spirit's purpose lies safe in our holy relationships and not in bodies, and, in fact, bodies do not intrude upon holy relationships.
Christ and God are in the holy relationship which is filled with God's Light because it is chosen by Him as the fulfillment of His Own Plan.
SPECIAL LOVE RELATIONSHIPS ARE NOT HOLY RELATIONSHIPS
For the special love relationship, in which the meaning of love is hidden, is undertaken solely to offset the hate, but not to let it go. (T-16.IV.1:3)
You cannot limit hate. The special love relationship will not offset it [hate], but will merely drive it underground and out of sight. (T-16.IV.1:5-6)
The special love relationship is an attempt to bring love into separation. And, as such, it is nothing more than an attempt to bring love into fear, and make it real in fear [an impossibility]. (T-16.IV.7:1-2)
WHAT ARE HOLY RELATIONSHIPS?
You cannot enter into real [Love] relationships with any of God's Sons unless you love them all and equally. Love is not special. If you single out part of the Sonship for your love, you are imposing guilt on all your relationships and making them unreal. You can love only as God loves. Seek not to love unlike Him, for there is no love apart from His. Until you recognize that this is true, you will have no idea what love is like. (T-13.X.11:1-6)
Holy Spirit: The identity of the Holy
Spirit as an Idea is one of the most difficult to understand in the Course, in
that He seems to be everywhere; in God, in the Sonship, in the Christ and
even in all our "human" minds here on earth! Raj/Jesus defines the
Holy Spirit as none other than our own Right Mind, or Higher Self, or
Christ/Buddha Self, or Son-of-God Self, all of which we are as
Beings within the Mind-of-God. Although the Holy Spirit is
personified as "He," a close study reveals that the Holy Spirit is not
an independent Being-as-such. Traditionally, the Holy Spirit seems to
operate in a Self-autonomous way alongside God and the Sonship, and the term
"Trinity" would seem to suggest such an "independent"
status. However, hundreds of quotations in the Course affirm that the Holy
Spirit is a One Unified Spiritual Thought (Idea) of God. As this Spiritual Thought System,
the Holy Spirit is equally shared
by God and all His Creations--who are the Sonship within God.
In understanding God's Spiritual Thought concept of the Holy Spirit we first have to distinguish clearly between the Mind-as-such Beingness (Existence), and the Thoughts which that Mind-as-such not only generates, but also contains and holds. The Holy Spirit, then, is an Idea System, or Communication Network (as a Thought) joining God's Mind-as such with all the other Minds (the Sonship) who exist within God's Mind-as-such. If this is hard to understand, please read on.
All of the above is the reason why,
in the Course, Jesus can say that not only is he the manifestation of the Holy
Spirit, but also that the Holy Spirit abides in the part of our Minds-as-such
that is part of the universal Christ Mind. The Course, itself, has come from
Jesus (he says) and in that sense Jesus is the Holy Spirit communicating God's
Wisdom and Knowledge to us, intertwined with much practical curriculum content,
lessons and exercises.
In our everyday lives here, in this world, we are able to open our closed ego-minds if that is our only wish. Then we have to choose to act on that wish. To facilitate this At-one-ment healing process, we have to meditate, pray, study and learn from the Course, and connect and communicate through the Holy Spirit with Jesus, other helpful teachers, our brothers and, above all, God Himself. The Holy Spirit within us links all our Minds within the Absolute One Mind of God. Through His Holy Spirit, God actively shares His Spiritual Gifts of Love, Light, Peace, Joy, Happiness, Freedom, Reason and Knowledge with EveryOne.
But in order to empty our closed, cluttered minds of their meaningless junk-beliefs and useless accumulated past errors of learning, we must (with continuous guidance and help through the Holy Spirit) dismantle our egos totally, and change all our relationships to Holy ones. When that "sweet transition" is completed, and the desire to Wake Up is all we want or desire, God will Take His Final Step in our Awakening so that we experience Him directly as One.

B. THE IDENTITY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ARE AS FOLLOWS:
The Holy Spirit is the mechanism of miracles. (T-1.I.38:1)
The Holy Spirit is the highest communication medium. (T-1.I.46:1)
The Holy Spirit is described as the remaining communication link between God and His separated Sons. (C-6.3:1)
He [the Holy Spirit] knows because he is part of God; He perceives because He was sent to save humanity. (C-6.3:3)
CORRECTION PRINCIPLE, THE ANSWER:
He [the Holy Spirit] is the great correction principle; the bringer of true perception, the inherent power of the vision of Christ. (C-6.3:4)
The Holy Spirit is described throughout the Course as giving us the answer to the separation and bringing the [God-given] plan of the Atonement to us, establishing our particular part in it and showing us exactly what it is. (C-6.2:1)
I have said before that the Holy Spirit is God's Answer to the ego. (T-5.III.5:3)
He is the light in which the forgiven world is perceived; in which the face of Christ alone is seen. (C-6.3:5)
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS IN OUR MINDS, THE CHRIST MIND:
The Holy Spirit abides in the part of your mind that is part of the Christ Mind. He represents your Self and your Creator, Who are one. (C-6.4:1-2)
Since the Holy Spirit is in your mind, your mind can also believe only what is true. (T-6.II.10:3)
The Holy Spirit is the Mediator between the interpretations of the ego and the knowledge of the Spirit. (T-5.III.7:1)
The Holy Spirit mediates higher to lower communication, keeping the direct channel from God to you open for revelation. (T-1.II.5:3)
Salvation is nothing more than "right-mindedness," which is not the One-mindedness of the Holy Spirit, but which must be achieved before One-mindedness is restored. (T-4.II.10:1)
As a man and also one of God's creations, my [Jesus'] right thinking, which came from the Holy Spirit or the Universal Inspiration, taught me first and foremost that this Inspiration is for all. (T-5.I.4:6)
The Holy Spirit is the Mind of the Atonement. (T-5.I.6:3)
THERAPIST, HEALER, TEACHER, GUIDE:
The Holy Spirit is the only Therapist. (T-9.V.8:4)
All healing is release from the past. That is why the Holy Spirit is the only Healer. (T-13.VIII.1:1-2)
The holy instant does not replace the need for learning, for the Holy Spirit must not leave you as your Teacher until the holy instant has extended far beyond time. (T-15.VIII.1:1)
The Holy Spirit is my only Guide. (W-pI.rVI.215.1:2)
The Voice of the Holy Spirit is the Call to Atonement, or the restoration of the integrity of the mind. (T-5.I.5:4)
Nothing that is [Truly] good can be lost because it comes from the Holy Spirit, the Voice for creation. (T-5.IV.1:7)
THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:
The Holy Spirit is invisible, but you can see the results of His Presence, and through them [these results] you will learn that He is there. (T-12.VII.3:1)
The limits the world places on communication are the chief barriers to direct experience of the Holy Spirit, Whose Presence is always there and Whose Voice is available but for the hearing. (M-25.2:5)
AS THE BRIDGE:
I [Jesus] have already said that the Holy Spirit is the bridge for the transfer of perception to knowledge, so we can use the terms as if they were related, because in His Mind they are. (T-5.III.1:2)
The ego's perception has no counterpart in God, but the Holy Spirit remains the bridge between perception and knowledge. (T-6.II.7:2)
The Holy Spirit is the bridge to Him [the Father], made from your willingness to unite with Him and created by His joy in union with you. (T-16.IV.12:2)
The Holy Spirit is the only part of the Holy Trinity that has a symbolic function. (T-5.I.4:1)
He [the Holy Spirit] is part of the Holy Trinity, because His Mind is partly yours and also partly God's. (T-5.III.1:4)
However, the Holy Spirit has the task of translating the useless into the useful, the meaningless into the meaningful, and the temporary into the timeless. (T-7.I.6:5)
The Holy Spirit is the translator of the laws of God to those who do not understand them. (T-7.II.4:5)
The Holy Spirit must still translate the fear into truth. (T-12.I.8:3)
Thus does the Holy Spirit replace fear with love and translate error into truth. (T-12.I.10:4)
THE HOLY SPIRIT AS AN IDEA:
The Holy Spirit is the idea of healing. Being thought, the idea gains as it is shared. Being the Call for God, it is also the idea of God. Since you are part of God it is also the idea of yourself [as Self], as well as of all His creations. The idea of the Holy Spirit shares the property of other ideas because it follows the laws of the Universe [all His Creations] of which it is a part. (T-5.III.2:1-5)
God did create spirit in His Own Thought and of a quality like to His Own. There is nothing else. (T-3.V.7:3-4)
Spirit is the Thought of God which He created like Himself. The unified spirit is God's one Son, or Christ. (C-1.1:3)
Spirit is the part [of our minds] that is still in contact with God through the Holy Spirit, Who abides in this part but sees the other part [ego] as well. (C-1.3:1)
C. JESUS' ROLE AS A MANIFESTATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Jesus is the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, Whom he called down upon the earth after he ascended into Heaven, or became completely identified with the Christ, the Son of God as He created Him. (C-6.1:1)
I [Jesus] am the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, and when you see me it will be because you have invited Him. (T-12.VII.6:1)
The Atonement principle was given to the Holy Spirit [by God] long before Jesus set in motion. (C-6.2:4)
HIGHER MIND, RIGHT MIND:
I [Jesus] do work with your higher mind, the home of the Holy Spirit, whether you are asleep or awake, just as your ego does with your lower mind, which is its home. (T-4.IV.11:2)
The Holy Spirit is in your right mind, as He was in mine. (T-5.I.3:3)
Revelations are indirectly inspired by me [Jesus] because I am close to the Holy Spirit, and alert to the revelation-readiness of my brothers. (T-1.II.5:1)
Miracles are the way in which minds that serve the Holy Spirit unite with me [Jesus] for the salvation or release of all God's creations. (T-1.III.3:4)
JESUS AS OUR MODEL:
I [Jesus] have enjoined you to behave as I behaved, but we must respond to the same Mind to do this. This Mind is the Holy Spirit, Whose Will is for God always. He teaches you how to keep me as a model for your thought, and to behave like me as a result. The power of our joint motivation is beyond belief, but not beyond accomplishment. (T-5.II.12:1-4)
You are not asked to repeat my [Jesus'] experiences because the Holy Spirit, Whom we share, makes this unnecessary. (T-6.I.11:2)
The Holy Spirit has one direction for all minds, and the one He taught me [Jesus] is yours. (T-8.V.6:2)
D. THE HOLY SPIRIT'S ROLE IN UNDOING ERRORS AND DISMANTLING THE EGO
ALL ERRORS ARE UNREAL:
The miracle dissolves error because the Holy Spirit identifies error as false or unreal. (T-1.I.39:1)
Although perception of any kind is unreal, you made it and the Holy Spirit can therefore use it well. (T-6.II.9:6)
The ego therefore is totally committed to untruth, perceiving in total contradiction to the Holy Spirit and to the knowledge of God. (T-7.VI.9:8)
THE BODY AND SICKNESS:
When the ego tempts you to sickness do not ask the Holy Spirit to heal the body, for this would merely be to accept the ego's belief that the body is the proper aim of healing. Ask, rather, that the Holy Spirit teach you the right perception of the body, for perception alone can be distorted. (T-8.IX.1:5-6)
LIMITING THE HOLY SPIRIT:
It is only because you think that you can run some little part, or deal with certain aspects of your life alone, that the guidance of the Holy Spirit is limited. (T-14.XI.8:4)
Any relationship you would substitute for another has not been offered to the Holy Spirit for His use. (T-15.V.6:1)
In a sense, the special relationship was the ego's answer to the creation of the Holy Spirit, Who was God's Answer to the separation. (T-17.IV.4:1)
The Holy Spirit asks only this little help of you: Whenever your thoughts wander to a special relationship which still attracts you, enter with Him into a holy instant, and there let Him release you. (T-16.VI.12:1)
UNDOING THE EGO THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT:
A major step in the Atonement plan is to undo error at all levels. (T-2.IV.2:1)
Give it [vengeance] therefore to the Holy Spirit, Who will undo it in you because it does not belong in your mind, which is part of God. (T-5.VI.7:3)
The Answer merely undoes the question by establishing the fact that to question reality [that God's Light is in you] is to question meaninglessly. That is why the Holy Spirit never questions. His sole function is to undo the questionable and thus lead to certainty. (T-7.III.5:3-5)
The Holy Spirit will undo for you everything you have learned that teaches that what is not true must be reconciled with truth. (T-13.XI.11:1)
The Holy Spirit has the task of undoing what the ego has made. (T-5.III.5:5)
But having accepted the errors as yours [without projecting them], do not keep them. Give them over quickly to the Holy Spirit to be undone completely, so that all their effects will vanish from your mind and from the Sonship as a whole. (T-7.VIII.5:5-6)
For the Holy Spirit, Who knows only the present, uses it to undo the fear by which the ego would make the present useless. (T-15.I.7:5) The Holy Spirit would undo all this now. (T-15.I.8:1)
E. THE HOLY SPIRIT'S ROLE IN OUR LEARNING PROCESSES OF REMEMBERING, RELINQUISHING, RECOGNIZING, ETC.
The Holy Spirit cannot ask more than you are willing to do. (T-2.VI.6:2)
I [Jesus] have said already that I can reach up and bring the Holy Spirit down to you, but I can bring Him to you only at your own invitation. (T-5.I.3:2)
The way to recognize your brother is by recognizing the Holy Spirit in him. (T-5.III.1:1)
You may let your mind misperceive, but the Holy Spirit lets your mind reinterpret its own misperceptions. (T-5.III.9:6)
Offer the Holy Spirit only your willingness to remember [Reality, Knowledge and Truth], for He retains the knowledge of God and of yourself [as a Son] for you, waiting for your acceptance. (T-10.II.2:3)
Yet to find the place [of Peace in God], you must relinquish your investment in the world as you project it, allowing the Holy Spirit to extend the real world to you from the altar of God. (T-12.III.10:9)
If you would be a happy learner, you must give everything you have learned to the Holy Spirit, to be unlearned for you. (T-14.II.6:1)
The Holy Spirit asks of you but this; bring to Him every secret you have locked away from Him. (T-14.VII.6:1)
Yet God can bring you there [to what lies underneath this little kingdom], if you are willing to follow the Holy Spirit through seeming terror, trusting Him not to abandon you and leave you there. For it is not His purpose to frighten you, but only yours. You are severely tempted to abandon Him at the outside ring of fear, but He would lead you safely through and far beyond [to the Real World]. (T-18.IX.3:7-9)
There is another advantage,--and a very important one,--in referring decisions to the Holy Spirit with increasing frequency. Perhaps you have not thought of this aspect, but its centrality is obvious. To follow the Holy Spirit's guidance is to let yourself be absolved from guilt. It is the essence of the Atonement. (M-29.3:1-4)
Say to the Holy Spirit only, "Decide for me," and it is done. (T-14.III.16:1)
F. THE HOLY SPIRIT'S ROLE IN TEACHING GOD'S TEACHERS HOW TO TEACH
What better vocation could there be for any part of the Kingdom than to restore it to the perfect integration that can make it whole? Hear only this through the Holy Spirit within you, and teach your brothers to listen as I [Jesus] am teaching you. (T-5.II.10:9-10)
The Holy Spirit is the perfect teacher. (T-5.III.10:1)
Like any good teacher, the Holy Spirit knows more than you do now, but He teaches only to make you equal with Him. (T-6.V.1:1)
You have never given any problem to the Holy Spirit He has not solved for you, nor will you ever do so. (T-16.II.9:1)
G. THE HOLY SPIRIT'S ANSWERS THAT LEAD US TO GOD'S FINAL STEP
The Holy Spirit is the home of minds that seek for freedom. In Him they have found what they have sought. (W-pI.199.6:1-2)
The Holy Spirit does not speak first, but He always answers. Everyone has called upon Him for help at one time or another and in one way or another, and has been answered. Since the Holy Spirit answers truly He answers for all time, which means that everyone has the answer now. (T-6.IV.3:2-4)
Hear, then, the one answer of the Holy Spirit to all questions the ego raises: You are a child of God, a priceless part of His Kingdom, which He created as part of Him. Nothing else exists and only this is real. (T-6.IV.6:1-2)
The mind that serves the Holy Spirit is unlimited forever, in all ways, beyond the laws of time and space, unbound by any preconceptions, and with strength and power to do whatever it is asked. (W-pI.199.2:1)
Accept your Father's gift. It is a call from Love to Love, that It be but Itself. The Holy Spirit is His gift, by which the quietness of Heaven is restored to God's beloved Son. (Commentary 7 on "What is the Holy Spirit?" W-pII.7.5:1-3)
Right-mindedness listens to the Holy Spirit, forgives the world, and through Christ's vision sees the real world in its place. This is the final vision, the last perception, the condition in which God takes the final step Himself. (C-1.5:2-3)
Holy Trinity, Trinity: In traditional
Christianity the Trinity consists of God the Father, God the Son and God the
Holy Spirit. The Course, while adopting a similar three-part Trinity, clarifies
the relationships of Father, Son and Spirit, as well as emphasizing their
The only difference, Jesus states, between the Creator and His Creations (the Sonship) is that the Creator created His Sons, but the Sons did not create their Creator. All God's creations (collectively described in the Course as God's One Son) have their Being as Minds within the Mind of God--Who is only Mind and without form. The "piece" of His Mind that God gave (and still gives) each Son is maintained in God's Mind by the Thoughts of Love with which God surrounds each Son's Mind.
Only what God creates as His Sons and what His Sons create in an identical way has any Real Existence. This creation of Mind Beings within Mind has nothing to do with forms, bodies, the earth or anything physical; it has nothing to do with space, time, matter, ego or any other aspect of the separation. Only Mind-as-such Really Exists and the Thoughts that Mind-as-such thinks are formless Life-in-action.
The Holy Spirit is an Idea or Thought of God. The Holy Spirit is the highest communication medium and is further described as being the remaining communication link between God and His separated Sons. Thus the Holy Spirit is God's Answer to the separation, in that God's Thoughts of Love, Light, Peace, Joy, Happiness, Freedom, Innocence, Strength and Knowledge can be communicated to the separated Sons through those in the Sonship, who, like Jesus himself, can understand perception, forms and symbols, none of which are real.
Nevertheless, because nothing in this world of separation is real, the Holy Trinity is of One Mind and One Will in God, of God.
The Son of God is part of the Holy Trinity, but the Trinity Itself is one. There is no confusion within Its Levels, because They are of one Mind and one Will. This single purpose creates perfect integration and establishes the peace of God. Yet this vision can be perceived only by the truly innocent. (T-3.II.5:4-7)
God's Oneness and ours are not separate, because His Oneness encompasses ours. (T-8.V.3:1)
home: There are two types of homes mentioned
frequently in the Course, and there are two different "entities" who
dwell in them. One "entity" is the ego which, although an artificial
belief-system in our minds, "inhabits" the body as its home. The other
Home is Heaven which is the Mind of God together with All that His Mind
contains, including the Sonship. Heaven is our Real Home where we abide
eternally as God's created Sons. This Home we have never actually left, except
in dreams of exile, within which we "live" false lives of fear, based
solely on lies.
The Course hints in several places, that it was the separated Son/Self who made the ego, the body, and this unreal world of form which we perceive through the body's eyes. This separated Son/Self then identified with the ego he had made in order to increase his distance from God. This sense of separation was further increased and literally "solidified" by having the ego (in its turn) identify with the (imaginary) physical body which now became the ego's home.
Furthermore the ego looks out through the body's eyes (in fact, all five senses) to perceive a "holographic" world of form which is not there in Reality. This perception through the body's five senses completes our firm, but insane, identification with ourselves as humans (from "humus" meaning earth); the present tense has been used here because this three-step separation from God (i.e., separated Self, ego, body/form) still continues unabated in every "ego-now" moment, moments in which we see only the past and future. We humans, who are Really eternal Mind-Sons of God created by Him, are sojourning here in a self-made separation, while obsessively addicted to our bodies as our home.
Heaven, however, is our Real Home, so the key question now becomes, how do we get from here to There, or, to put it another way, how do we wake up to God in God? The Course describes many methods for relinquishing this world of dreams and this includes relinquishing the ego/body belief system with which we identify.
What follows is a summary of most of the major methods for Waking up, each of which may be reviewed in more detail by selecting the requisite key words in the Main Word Index of this Companion. This list of healing/Waking-up techniques is in no particular order, because each individual has personal preferences related to his or her own At-one-ment path for going Home.

14. Understanding that there are no laws but God's

17. Realizing truly that all "sin," "guilt" and "blame" are merely correctable errors
18. Accepting God's Plan in place of the ego's plan
19. Being totally defenseless
20. Understanding that all sickness and sacrifice are defenses of the ego
21. Choosing the Joy of God; not pain, misery, and suffering
22. Wanting only God
23. Remembering we are all limitless Sons of God who are still as God created us as Minds in His Mind
honesty: Honesty is a complex problem for most
students of the Course and it calls for considerable clarification.
Traditionally honesty is a simple matter of always telling the truth,
but then the ethical philosopher promptly asks us, "Do we tell a lie to
save a thousand people from certain death?" In a different ego-context, do
we bluntly tell a mentally handicapped person he is simple-minded, or a
disfigured child she looks ugly?
Honesty, then, in this world, is mixed up with truth and falsity as an ego-polarity, and with our judgments and projections as egos. We might go so far as to say nothing this world believes is true, that egos are never honest and that the past is totally dishonest. (See quotations below.)
What else does the Course tell us about honesty? The most important application of honesty advocated by the Course is self-honesty. Almost every paragraph asks us to seek Truth honestly, and, with the help of the Holy Spirit, undo the false in ourselves. Any statement or act that is associated with, and motivated by, hate, fear and attack in our minds is dishonest. All ego-judgments of any Sons of God, which claim they are something other than Sons of God, are lies.
We must strive to undo the polarity of the ego's pseudo-truth and lies, a polarity which includes all illusions, judgments, ego-perceptions, projections, special relations, specialness, fear, sin, guilt, blame, magic, idols, anger, sickness, pain, control, lack, the laws of this world, etc. This undoing can be accomplished by using the ego-dismantling method (see: forgive). Note that ego-dismantling, with the help of the Holy Spirit, calls for great self-honesty, no hidden secrets, no rationalizations, and no evasions or self-delusions (refer to W-pI.333:all).
As we rise above ego-polarities into right-mindedness we come to realize honesty and Truth are inextricably mixed with Love and Peace. In other words, if God's Love and Peace are not present in any communication or situation it is dishonest and unreal. If as Christs we Love everyone, everywhere, as Children of God, we are automatically honest because there is nothing to forgive. Only the ego judges and praises illusions, and this is the root of ego-"honesty/dishonesty."
Another essential attribute of real honesty is Trust, but this kind of Trust has nothing to do with the controlling, binding, and fear-laden aspects of what the ego calls "trust," because all Sons of God are perfectly Free. The ACIM Manual for Teachers contains a section on Honesty (see M-4.II:all).
Judgment destroys honesty and shatters trust. (M-4.III.1:10)
Bring this light [of God] fearlessly with you, and bravely hold it up to the foundation of the ego's [insane] thought system. Be willing to judge it with perfect honesty. Open the dark cornerstone of terror [fear] on which it rests, and bring it out into the light. (T-11.IN.3:7-9)
honor: An honored person is held in high regard
or great respect, one who is trustworthy and held in esteem for his or her
worthiness of character. The Course uses the term in a similar way, especially
when referring to Sons of God. Jesus, himself, says he honors each of us because
he loves us. Jesus also honors every Attribute of God, all of which God gave to
each of His Creations. Because each of us still retains these Gifts of God we,
too, must honor both our brothers and our Selves as Sons.
On the other hand honor is not due to any illusions because, when we honor anything of form (including bodies), we honor nothing. However, we must not therefore fall into the ego's polarity trap and despise all form, because it is ridiculous to hate "nothing." The Course states we can use some of the things we have made (in form) to assist us on our journey Home.
In addition to honoring God, His Attributes and His Creations, we can honor all the spiritual ways and means designed to wake us up, and these would include miracles, holy relationships, and any beliefs that contribute to our spiritual progress.
When honor is combined with our Love we deeply respect all God's Creations and in doing so we honor our Creator.
hope: Hope is one of those few words in the Course
that is applicable to all the vertical "levels" of the duality
(see: dual). These include our hopes for the body, the ego's vain hopes, the
aspirations of right-mindedness, the hopes for sanity and healing that both the
Holy Spirit and the Christ-Self hold for us, and God Himself as our Hope, our
only certain Goal.
We feel that we must sacrifice the hope of the body's pleasure as we progress along our journey Home but the Course assures us the body has no hope of pleasure. It also has no pain because the polarity of pleasure and pain is only in the ego-mind as a set of false beliefs.
The ego holds out to us a long list of hopes almost all of which it promises for the future. Even on the rare occasions that these ego-hopes are fulfilled they are almost always fleeting and shallow. Very rarely do they live up to the ego's expectations of joy or ecstasy. This is why the ego constantly shifts from one goal to another with new expectations, and with new hopes that this time the (false) goal will be satisfying. Even if we do manage to attain a temporary "high" (of ego-inflation) it fades rapidly or, worse, crashes abruptly. In this respect the Course contrasts hope with its polar opposite, despair, a deflating device the ego uses temporarily before re-cycling us once again into elevated false hopes. This is especially true for all special relationships, and our cravings for specialness.
Any problem we strive to judge or solve for ourselves without the help of the Holy Spirit, puts it past the hope of healing. But the Voice for God constantly reminds us that all hope is ours, and that this will become more certain as we move into right-mindedness and see the world as a place of genuine hope, spiritual happiness and Love. We are all guiltless in a world of sparkling spiritual hope and Loving friendliness.
At the Highest Level of God and the Sonship we unite with our only spiritual Hope, Who is God. When this state of Loving Oneness is reached, all separation disappears from the Sonship, and all our little hopes and despairs go with it. God is our only Hope, and we walk to Him hand in hand with all our brothers including Jesus.
hopelessness: Please read the above entry on hope
first. Many of us try to cling to some aspects of the ego, some aspects of the
body, some of the idols of this world, but all these little worldly addictions,
false comforts and fanciful fascinations are hopeless substitutes for
the Love, Light, Peace, Joy and Comfort of God. It is difficult for us humans,
after millions of years of separation from God and the Sonship, to undo
our fixed beliefs in what we have made to replace God and His Love. Yet all we
made here (in this world of physical perception) is without hope because it is
based on fear, guilt, sin, judgment and attack. It is truly a hopeless situation
in which we find ourselves here; one of insanity, disease, destruction and
And thus our only hope is to end the separation and wake up in the Mind of God. To do this we must make the decision whether to stay on the path of separation and ego, or to choose the way of Love and Light that leads us Home to God. Many Teachers are happy to help us on our journey to Heaven, not least Jesus through his own curriculum, the Course he has given us personally.

horrors: We are told in the Course (Workbook
Lesson 14) that our egos have a "personal repertory of horrors," some
of which are shared illusions and some of which are not. We are advised to list
these horrors temporarily in our minds (not to keep them there--they are
already etched on our ego-minds) but to look at them. We must realize
that God did not
create any of the horrors or disasters in this world, and did not
create anything that arouses fear in us.
Anything we fear, or hate, or regard as terrible or horrible, exists only as illusions in our own ego-minds--apart from God's Mind. In order to let these insane thoughts go, put each one through the ego-dismantling method.
With eyes closed, think of all the horrors in the world that cross your mind. Name each one as it occurs to you, and then deny its reality. God did not create it, and so it is not real. Say, for example: God did not create that war, and so it is not real. God did not create that airplane crash, and so it is not real. God did not create that disaster [specify], and so it is not real.
Suitable subjects for the application of today's idea also include anything you are afraid might happen to you, or to anyone about whom you are concerned. In each case, name the "disaster" quite specifically. Do not use general terms. For example, do not say, "God did not create illness," but, "God did not create cancer," or heart attacks, or whatever may arouse fear in you.
This is your personal repertory of horrors at which you are looking. These things are part of the world you see. Some of them are shared illusions, and others are part of your personal hell. It does not matter. What God did not create can only be in your own mind apart from His. Therefore, it has no meaning. In recognition of this fact, conclude the practice periods by repeating today's idea: God did not create a meaningless world. (W-pI.14.4,5&6:all)
host: A good host is someone who makes all his or her visitors, guests and lodgers completely at home, very comfortable and at ease. In the Course the word "host" is used as a two-way analogy for each of us individually and God (as Mind-Beings). Thus God is our Host because we each have our Being, our mind-existence, within His Universal Mind. And each of us is host to God because He exists completely in each of our Minds, the Minds that He gave us within His Mind when we were created. This mutual "hosting" of God and each Son-as-Mind is, in Reality, eternal and changeless and has nothing to do with form or bodies. The separation, which is an illusion, has never altered the Reality of Who we are as hosts of God. In Fact, we have never left His Mind. (See: hostage)
hostage: The Course asks us several times whether
we (as Sons) prefer to be hostage to the ego, or host to God. A hostage is any
person who is held, against their free will, by a terrorist, criminal or enemy
until certain demands or conditions are met. The ego, then, is a terrorist who
holds our Christ-Self hostage against his free will preventing our return to our
Home in God. The ego demands its own false "freedom" from God, whom it
sees as an Authority to be escaped from. The ego also demands all kinds of
booty, idols and recognition, and constantly threatens the Christ-Self with
suffering and death. Of course, in Fact, the Christ-Self is impervious to
suffering and death which are not Real.
But it is impossible to negotiate with the ego because it is untrustworthy, keeps none of its bargains, and in the end, it will leave you with nothing but death.
The ego, however, inherently carries the seeds of its own demise such as fear, sin, guilt and attack. Sooner or later it bottoms-out and starts to realize there has to be a "better way" to live than being a terrorist and hostage-taker. It begins to see itself, its victims and its "authorities," not as pawns in a battle of survival and success, but as Real Beings, as Christs. For this seeing it needs Christ's Vision and so, more and more, in a state of right-mindedness and with much help from the Holy Spirit, the ego voluntarily yields its "power," hands over its defensiveness and, eventually, agrees to its own gentle dissolution. At this point of total forgiveness "it is finished" and the eternal Christ in us is resurrected. There is no death. (See: host)
Would you be hostage to the ego or host to God? You will accept only whom you invite. You are free to determine who shall be your guest, and how long he shall remain with you. Yet this is not real freedom, for it still depends on how you see it. The Holy Spirit is there, although He cannot help you without your invitation. And the ego is nothing, whether you invite it in or not. Real freedom depends on welcoming reality, and of your guests only the Holy Spirit is real. Know, then, Who abides with you merely by recognizing what is there already, and do not be satisfied with imaginary comforters, for the Comforter of God is in you. (T-11.II.7:all)
house: The Course uses the analogy of a house to
symbolize the type of
mind-environment with which we surround ourselves. This mind-environment
actually consists of our beliefs, thoughts, ideas and attitudes, and it can take
many symbolic forms, such as a prison house or Heaven.
Most of us think we, as minds are housed within our bodies, and that the body is a "window" (an interface) through which the mind looks out on an "external" world. Thus these bodies are seen as special prison houses of sin and hate which keep our minds separate from one another. This ego/body house is also described as an impoverished house, a house set upon straw, a house of death and a slaughter house. But this extremely limited view that we are ego-minds housed inside bodies, separate and sinful, and doomed to die, is not only insane but also a major illusion of our own making.
In Truth we Live in our Father's House, the Heaven of His Mind all of which is also our House. The House, the Mind of God, is filled with His Treasures which include all His Creations (Sons) as well as Love, Light, Peace, Joy, Happiness, Freedom and Knowledge. God's Mind is always an open House, quite limitless, within which there is perfect communication and endless Love.
With this Vision of Christ, why would we want to stay in a slaughter house of bodies where all "life" feeds on "life" and eventually seems to die?
human: This word literally means, "people of
the humus, the earth," and in the Course, it is associated with our false
identities as egos and bodies who are separated from God and the Sonship. But
we, who are slaves of time and changing human destiny, must practice freeing
our minds of all human laws, limits, special relationships and fears.
The Holy Spirit, Who is God's Voice will help us hear and understand the Word of God, which we can come to know through the Course. To do this we have to stop thinking like human beings bound by bodies and egos, and start thinking and feeling as the Christ in us, who knows only Truth, Love, Peace and God.
humble, humility: Jesus distinguishes very
clearly between false humility and true humility, which, in the Course, he turns
upside-down. Humility, we are told, is a lesson for the ego, not Spirit.
The ego confuses humility with self-debasement, abnegation, servility,
self-effacement and sacrifice. To the ego all these are desirable
characteristics of a humble person, but to Spirit (when observing the fictional
ego) they are merely the horizontal polar ego-opposites of arrogance, dominance,
pushiness and pomposity. Self-debasement and arrogance, then, are only the flip
sides of the same ego coin!
But the ego has another cunning ploy to humiliate us, and to "win-out" over Spirit in defining our own identity. The ego states it is unforgivable arrogance to identify yourself as a Son of God; it is a sin of the first magnitude, and if you commit that sin you will be severely punished by God. But, says the ego, if you berate yourself for being bad, and punish yourself for being the sinner you are, then this is "genuine" humility for which God Himself, being pleased with your abject penance and repentance, will eventually reward you in the future.
The Course asserts this is all non-existent ego-nonsense. In this world of illusions, forms and bodies we make mistakes, not sins, and with the constant help of the Holy Spirit these mistakes are easily correctable and undone until they soon disappear into the nothingness from whence they came. There is no sin.
God has created each of us as His eternal Sons. In Reality we are immaculate Mind-Beings who have everlasting Life within His Mind-as-such, created in the exact image of our Creator. God Himself says that this is our true Identity-in-Him, and if (as egos) we deny that Identity, we are being very arrogant because we are contradicting God's Word.
But when we fully accept the Fact we are God's perfect Sons we are being truly humble because we are accepting His Will. If ever we need to ask ourselves the question, "What am I?" it is wise not to buy into the ego's arrogant answer ("You are an eternal sinner"), but to read and perhaps memorize the quotation given below.
I am God's Son, complete and healed and whole, shining in the reflection of His Love. In me is His creation sanctified and guaranteed eternal life. In me is love perfected, fear impossible, and joy established without opposite. I am the holy home of God Himself. I am the Heaven where His Love resides. I am His holy Sinlessness Itself, for in my purity abides His Own. (Commentary 14 on "What am I?" W-pII.14.1:all)
hurt: As egos and bodies we are easily hurt, even
though, in Reality, neither are real. Because egos and bodies can be hurt, we
can hurt others by attacking them in numerous ways; some subtle, some
forthright. All anger, attack, defensiveness, verbal abuse and vengeance or
getting even, hurt both parties to the conflict whichever way the flow of battle
may be going at any given moment.
But it is the ego that is the essential player behind all hurt and hurting, and paradoxically, it is the ego's constant search for specialness, success, comfort, "love" and satisfactions that render it vulnerable to hurt, pain and misery. If the ego did not need or want anything in this world (on behalf of itself, its body, or other ego-bodies) it could never be hurt. However, imaginary needs and wants are what the core of the ego is all about, and when the ego does not get what it wants, it is hurt--or hurts others to get what it wants. One of our ego's favorite cries is, "I will hate you and hurt you until you learn to love me." And that goes for all special relationships, and is as true for couples as it is for families. Resentful withdrawal of love is a favorite way to hurt, but we usually call it punishment, defensiveness, tit-for-tat, setting him straight, come uppance, etc. When we say, "I will teach him (or her) a lesson!" we rarely think through what the lesson is; almost invariably the lesson is, "Hate and hurt people to get their love, to get what we want from them." For most of us obedient behavior in another is love.
Behind all this ego-body hurtful stupidity is our separation from Real Love and Happiness. We chase around on this planet searching for pseudo-loves and false satisfactions in thousands of forms, all of them fictitious, and when an idol falls we are hurt, until we foolishly try yet again. In this insane scenario we always see other people as the source of the love we seek and we strive to get it from them. If a third person or party blocks our way we hurt them to be rid of them as an obstacle.
God is the only Source of all Love, and there is no other love besides His. Understanding this Truth will eliminate all hurt and hurting, because all other fruitless searching for pseudo-love and it substitutes will cease. Egos will be undone, and bodies will be seen and used solely for spiritual communication. Once the utter futility of seeking love where it is not, is fully realized, we can go Home to limitless Love and eternal Happiness as Minds within the Mind of God (Heaven).
hush: The Course becomes quite lyrical in places and nowhere is this poetic quality better seen than in "The hush of Heaven holds my heart today." (Lesson 286). This theme is also found in the Text, a theme of stillness and happy expectancy in which all illusions end as we discover that Heaven is God's Love and we are One with Him.
There is a hush in Heaven, a happy expectancy, a little pause of gladness in acknowledgement of the journey's end. For Heaven knows you well, as you know Heaven. No illusions stand between you and your brother now. (T-19.IV.A.6:1-3)
The hush of Heaven holds my heart today. Father, how still today! How quietly do all things fall in place! This is the day that has been chosen as the time in which I come to understand the lesson that there is no need that I do anything. In You is every choice already made. In You has every conflict been resolved. In You is everything I hope to find already given me. Your peace is mine. My heart is quiet, and my mind at rest. Your Love is Heaven, and Your Love is mine. The stillness of today will give us hope that we have found the way, and traveled far along it to a wholly certain goal. Today we will not doubt the end which God Himself has promised us. We trust in Him, and in our Self, Who still is one with Him. (W-pII.286.all)
hymns: Hymns and chants are found in all
religions, because it is natural to sing in praise of God, and to express
gratitude to Him for His Gifts of Love and eternal Life.
In the Course Jesus even makes oblique references to several traditional hymns such as, "The old rugged cross," "O come [all] ye faithful," "Abide in me," and "Glory to God in the highest." (Refer to quotations below.)
The themes of the hymns we are encouraged to sing in the Course invoke gladness, thanksgiving, praise, redemption, freedom, love, gratitude, Heaven and God.
Do not make the pathetic error of "clinging to the old rugged cross." (T-4.IN.3:7)
O come ye faithful to the holy union of the Father and the Son in you! (T-19.IV.B.7:4)
Light and joy and peace abide in me. (W-pI.93.8:2)
God would have His host abide in perfect freedom. (T-15.IV.3:5)
Glory to God in the highest, and to you because He has so willed it. (T-8.III.1:1)
