madness:  Everyone's ego suffers from madness because in our imagined separation from God we are delusional with respect to all our perceptions and fear-based ideas. We overlook God's Reality, and therefore see and hear only what our dissociated (split) fearful ego-minds project outward. Forgiveness eradicates the ego and its madness. (See also: insanity, delusions, hallucinate)

How much do you desire peace instead of endless strife and misery and pain? These questions are the same, in different form. Forgiveness is your peace, for herein lies the end of separation and the dream of danger and destruction, sin and death; of madness and of murder, grief and loss. (T-#572/615-29.VI.1:2-4)

magic:  The Course, as it does with many words and concepts, presents a view of magic that is somewhat different from our popular definitions, even though the kernel meaning is the same: magic is the art of producing events or perceivable effects by invisible occult powers of the mind, usually using charms, rituals, spells, sleight of hand, sorcery, etc., as a prop or catalyst.

The Course shocks us by including many areas of our lives that we would not normally consider magic: illness, medicines, physical remedies, time, and ego-defenses, just to name a few.

The Truth is that matter-as-such has no power of its own; in other words, matter is totally under the control of Mind, which is why all kinds of miracles can occur right Now in God's on-going Creation -- once we set about dismantling our egos, yielding to Love, and allowing His perfection to unfold through us as us.

So do we lay aside our amulets, our charms and medicines, our chants and bits of magic in whatever form they take.  (W-#264/271-pI.140.10:1)

Atonement heals with certainty, and cures all sickness. For the mind which understands that sickness can be nothing but a dream is not deceived by forms the dream may take. Sickness where guilt is absent cannot come, for it is but another form of guilt. (W-#263/270-pI.140.4:1-3)  Sickness is not an accident. Like all defenses, it is an insane device for self-deception. And like all the rest, its purpose is to hide reality, attack it, change it, render it inept, distort it, twist it, or reduce it to a little pile of unassembled parts. The aim of all defenses is to keep the truth from being whole. The parts are seen as if each one were whole within itself. Defenses are not unintentional, nor are they made without awareness. They are secret, magic wands you wave when truth appears to threaten what you would believe. (W-#250/257-pI.136.2:all) & (W-#250/257-pI.136.3:1-2)

The inconsistencies, the compromises and the rituals the world fosters in its vain attempts to cling to death and yet [at the same time] to think love real are mindless magic, ineffectual and meaningless.  (M-#64/67-27.6:9)

The whole distortion that made magic rests on the belief that there is a creative ability in matter which the mind cannot control.  (T-#19/23-2.IV.2:8)

Yet that is magic's purpose; to make illusions true through false perception.  (P-#9/20-2.IV.7:4)

Time is a trick, a sleight of hand, a vast illusion in which figures come and go as if by magic.  (W-#291/298-pI.158.4:1)

When all magic is recognized as merely nothing, the teacher of God has reached the most advanced state.  (M-#40/42-16.9:5)

magnitude:  Although we had separated from God and our true Divinity and "descended" into the littleness of the ego's myopic world of limitation, in Truth we share the Magnitude of God, because in Reality God is each of us, though each of us is not all of God. Our genuine magnitude is rediscovered when, as Sons and Daughters of God, we decide to Wake Up to our grandeur. (See: grandeur, majesty, littleness, separation)

Yet in the returning the little light must be acknowledged first, for the separation was a descent from magnitude to littleness.  (T-#175/189-10.IV.8:5)

There is no doubt about what your function is, for the Holy Spirit knows what it is. There is no doubt about its magnitude, for it reaches you through Him from Magnitude. You do not have to strive for it, because you have it. All your striving must be directed against littleness, for it does require vigilance to protect your magnitude in this world. To hold your magnitude in perfect awareness in a world of littleness is a task the little cannot undertake. Yet it is asked of you, in tribute to your magnitude and not your littleness. Nor is it asked of you alone. The power of God will support every effort you make on behalf of His dear Son. Search for the little, and you deny yourself His power. God is not willing that His Son be content with less than everything. For He is not content without His Son, and His Son cannot be content with less than His Father has given him. (T-#285/307-15.III.4:all)

majesty:  Majesty is an Attribute of God that acknowledges His grandeur, dignity and sovereign power. God has shared (extended) all His Attributes with His Sons and Daughters and therefore we also have majesty within us as our Birthright. When we recognize each individual human being as a Child of God we will see His Majesty in both them and in ourselves. (See: grandeur, birthright, inheritance)

Recognizing the Majesty of God as your brother is to accept your own inheritance.  (T-#127/137-7.XI.5:4)

Anything in this world that you believe is good and valuable and worth striving for can hurt you, and will do so. Not because it has the power to hurt, but just because you have denied it is but an illusion, and made it real. And it is real to you. It is not nothing. And through its perceived reality has entered all the world of sick illusions. All belief in sin, in power of attack, in hurt and harm, in sacrifice and death, has come to you. For no one can make one illusion real, and still escape the rest. For who can choose to keep the ones that he prefers, and find the safety that the truth alone can give? Who can believe illusions are the same, and still maintain that even one is best? Lead not your little life in solitude, with one illusion as your only friend. This is no friendship worthy of God's Son, nor one with which he could remain content. Yet God has given him a better Friend, in Whom all power in earth and Heaven rests. The one illusion that you think is friend obscures His grace and majesty from you, and keeps His friendship and forgiveness from your welcoming embrace. Without Him you are friendless. Seek not another friend to take His place. There is no other friend. What God appointed has no substitute, for what illusion can replace the truth? Who dwells with shadows is alone indeed, and loneliness is not the Will of God. (T-#513/553-26.VI.1:all) & (T-#514/553-26.VI.2:all) & (T-#514/553-26.VI.3:1)

maker, make:  These words are mostly used in the Course to indicate our egos are the makers of illusions, denials and lies, while, in a duality contrast, the terms "creator" and "create" are usually reserved for God, the Holy Spirit, and the Higher Self or Son of God.

Every symptom the ego makes involves a contradiction in terms, because the mind is split between the ego and the Holy Spirit, so that whatever the ego makes is incomplete and contradictory.  (T-#43/48-3.VI.7:4)

Everyone makes an ego or a self for himself, which is subject to enormous variation because of its instability. He also makes an ego for everyone else he perceives, which is equally variable. Their interaction is a process that alters both, because they were not made by or with the Unalterable. It is important to realize that this alteration can and does occur as readily when the interaction takes place in the mind as when it involves physical proximity. (T-#51/56-4.II.2:1-4)

Your own state of mind is a good example of how the ego was made. When you threw knowledge away it is as if you never had it. (T-#51/57-4.II.3:1-2)

Yet the ego, though encouraging the search for love very actively, makes one proviso; do not find it.  (T-#207/223-12.IV.1:3)

The ego makes illusions.  (W-#458/468-pII.332.1:1)

man, son of: In the Course the term "son of man" is almost a synonym for the ego. But the term "son of man" has in it a flavor of the separated Sons of God that we have chosen to be, the "fallen" Sons who made the ego so as to pretend we are individual human beings who are in denial of their Divinity as Children of God.

The son of man perceives an alien will [the ego] and wishes it were so.  (T-#481/517-24.VII.11:8)

The son of man is not the risen Christ.  (T-#482/518-25.IN.2:6)

For the redeemed son of man is the guiltless Son of God, and to recognize him is your redemption.  (T-#225/241-13.II.9:7)

Thus does the son of man become the Son of God.  (M-#30/31-12.2:1)

He is forever one, because he is as God created him. He has accepted Christ, and he is saved. Thus does the son of man become the Son of God. It is not really a change; it is a change of mind. Nothing external alters, but everything internal now reflects only the Love of God.  (M-#30/31-12.1:9-10) & (M-#30/31-12.2:1-3)

manifest, manifestation:  This is a huge topic which ranges from Jesus manifesting thousands of fish and loaves for his hungry audience, to modern day spiritual people who manifest objects for unselfish purposes. Machaelle Small Wright, who manifests things for her Perelandra Garden in Virginia, points out (in her book: Behaving as if the God in all Life Mattered, see: Q2T) that "there are three different dynamics of manifestation." The first occurs as a more or less synchronous event in that, when we wish for something, it appears shortly afterwards in our immediate environment, in circumstances where we can legitimately have it. The second form of manifestation occurs when devas and nature spirits work with fundamental energy in a co-creator partnership with a human who has "put out the call" for something, and that something is creatively manifested from that energy almost instantly on the spot. The third form of manifestation occurs by (a) going into a meditative state in Void/Oneness and then, (b) in full consciousness to become the object that's to be manifested, (c) decide if it was really what is needed, and then (d) move through the creative process experiencing the energies coming together along with the deva or devas involved.

I personally have assumed that the energies and Void referred to by Machaelle are identical to those involved in the "Casimir Effect" (see: H5).

Sai Baba, who also manifests objects for devotees, has mentioned both the participation of devas and that energy/particles may be involved. (See: Q2F)

We cannot rule out fourth form of manifestation which may simply involve the translocation of the article(s) from one place to another, and that this process may sometimes involve the two-way teleportation of the manifestor.

We should also remember that God is Creating the Universe of Universes as a continuous Movement within His Mind-as-Such only NOW (the past has gone and the future is not yet here), and that any manifestation by devas in cooperation with human beings takes place within the context of Creation Now.

In ACIM the terms "manifest" and "manifestation" are mostly used to encourage us to manifest Peace and Love in ourselves and others. Love, Peace and miracles are also the manifestations of the Holy Spirit.

What you want in yourself you will make manifest, and you will accept it from the world because you put it there by wanting it.  (T-#215/231-12.VII.7:5)

If you make love manifest, its messengers will come to you because you invited them.  (T-#215/231-12.VII.8:6)

When you have accepted your mission to extend peace you will find peace, for by making it manifest you will see it.  (T-#216/232-12.VII.11:1)

Your perception is the result of your invitation, coming to you as you sent for it. Whose [the Holy Spirit's or the ego's] manifestations would you see? Of whose presence would you be convinced? For you will believe in what you manifest, and as you look out, so will you see in. Two ways of looking at the world are in your mind, and your perception will reflect the guidance you have chosen. I [Jesus] am the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, and when you see me it will be because you have invited Him. For He will send you His witnesses if you will but look upon them. Remember always that you see what you seek, for what you seek you will find. The ego finds what it seeks, and only that. It does not find love, for that is not what it is seeking. (T-#214/230-12.VII.5:2-6) & (T-#215/230-12.VII.6:1-5)

manipulate, manipulation: It is our egos that constantly strive to manipulate everyone and everything that comes into our personal lives. Our egos do this continual manipulation of other people and our environment for the purpose of control. The ego's desire for control is a fruitless attempt to reduce or eliminate fear and attack in a wide variety of forms. Strangely, in most human relationships both participants make some use of fear and attack as a manipulative defensiveness against incoming fear and attack. One person shouts in anger to intimidate (cause some form of fear), and the other shouts back in reactive anger in the hope that this challenge will cause the instigator to back down fearfully, however mild that fear may be. All this mutual interaction between egos is manipulative. One of the ego's biggest manipulative tactics is pseudo-love. We may "butter-up" adversaries with affection, praise and caresses in order to calm them down or distract them from negative behaviors.

God never manipulates because God only recognizes Soul which is the Real You, the inner Christ-Self Who is One with God within God's Mind. We are Free Beings within God, not puppets.

And there is no divine puppet at the end of strings that God is manipulating. Your Mind and the Mind of God are One. Your Soul is the Soul that is God. Soul is Mind's Capacity to Feel the Meaning of All of Creation. You don't have a Soul. From a separated standpoint that is the way you would interpret it, that you do have a soul, but the Truth is that You Are Soul. You Are, you might say, God's Capacity to Feel the Meaning of Creation, the Movement of Creation Infinitely. That's not an experience of puppethood. That's an Experience of Oneness with God. (Raj Excerpt – ACIM Study Group with Raj/Jesus -- 2003-07-27)

marriage:  What very few humans seem to understand is that everyone on this planet is platonically married to all the others, and the sooner we all realize the Fact that we do Love one another, not "until death do us part," but for all eternity, then we will all Wake Up. Our basic problem is that we have separated from one another; we have "divorced" not only each other, but also God. Sometimes, I ask clients with jealous egos (out there in separation land) if they realize that, by their definitions of "love," God must be the most unfaithful Being in the Universe because He Loves everyone equally to the maximum. He also forgives all so-called "sins" and "errors" because they only stem from egoic ignorance. Jesus said, and still says, "Forgive everyone Father, for they know not what they do," and that is exactly what God does because there is no sin -- only a lack of Knowledge. There is no contradiction or incongruity between Loving everyone as God does and simultaneously Loving a spouse, or partner, or your family. Simply Love everyone and everything and do no harm.

You see what I'm saying? It's not about some gentle, unintrusive way of living life that makes it comfortable, while at the bottom line all of you are unconscious of your Birthright. Sometimes sloppy metaphysical thinking seems to justify the right or the rights that individuals have, to be stupid if they want to, to be sick if they want to, to create a drama of death if they want to, to engage in gang fights and squabbles, and even a style of relating in marriages that is constantly argumentative and emotionally dynamic without resolution.  (Raj Excerpt -- Course Study with Raj/Jesus -- 2003-09-07)

Getting is based upon the idea that the only way to survive is for relationships to be transactional. Why? Because the rules of transactional relationships provide you with a guarantee; a guarantee that you will not end up being shortchanged. This for that. I'll take care of you and all your needs if you will take care of me and all my needs. But you begin to fall short of meeting my needs and I'm out of here. This is [laughing]…  this is really the practical bottom line of marriages, isn't it? Or of any somewhat harmonious and ongoing relationship. Another part of the bottom line of transactional relationships is the premise that each of you is perfectly individual--perfectly, independently deposited into the middle of the Universe. You're taught to grow up and learn to stand on your own two feet, aren't you? To be respectably self-sufficient. Living that way is hell, because it's based upon a fundamental illusion. The Truth that counteracts and obliterates that illusion is that every single one of you is irrevocably one with every other individual, irrevocably one with the whole Brotherhood, and even more primarily than that, irrevocably one with your Source. Therefore, there's no way for you to be independent. There's no way for you to be successful, respectably successful in your own right. Whether you want to look at it or not, you are all dependent upon each other. Dependent upon each other not really because you're helpless, but dependent upon each other because you're incomplete without each other. You're incomplete without each other. (Raj Excerpt -- Course Study with Raj/Jesus -- 2004-03-28)

Could you not look with greater charity on whom God loves with perfect love? Do not interpret against God's Love, for you have many witnesses that speak of it so clearly that only the blind and deaf could fail to see and hear them. This year determine not to deny what has been given you by God. Awake and share it, for that is the only reason He has called to you. His Voice has spoken clearly, and yet you have so little faith in what you heard, because you have preferred to place still greater faith in the disaster you have made. Today, let us resolve together to accept the joyful tidings that disaster is not real and that Reality is not disaster. Reality is safe and sure, and wholly kind to everyone and everything. There is no greater love than to accept this and be glad. For Love asks only that you be happy, and will give you everything that makes for happiness. (T-#310/333-16.II.7:8) & (T-#310/334-16.II.8:all)

martyr: The time for martyrs is over. Martyrdom is unnecessary in this day and age of Spiritual Awakening. God does not call for sacrifices. Rather, of our own God-given Free Will, He wants us to Wake up. In ACIM Jesus tells us, "I do not call for martyrs but for teachers." What do we teach ourselves and others? Teach only Love. (See full quotations below.)

Teach only love, and learn that love is yours and you are love.  (T-#92/100-6.III.4:9)

As you read the teachings of the Apostles, remember that I [Jesus] told them myself that there was much they would understand later, because they were not wholly ready to follow me at the time. I do not want you to allow any fear to enter into the thought system toward which I am guiding you. I do not call for martyrs but for teachers. No one is punished for sins, and the Sons of God are not sinners. Any concept of punishment involves the projection of blame, and reinforces the idea that blame is justified. The result is a lesson in blame, for all behavior teaches the beliefs that motivate it.  (T-#87/95-6.I.16:1-6)

Reality is the only safety. Your will is your salvation because it is the same as God's. The separation is nothing more than the belief that it is different. No right mind can believe that its will is stronger than God's. If, then, a mind believes that its will is different from His, it can only decide either that there is no God or that God's Will is fearful. The former accounts for the atheist and the latter for the martyr, who believes that God demands sacrifices. Either of these insane decisions will induce panic, because the atheist believes he is alone, and the martyr believes that God is crucifying him. Yet no one really wants either abandonment or retaliation, even though many may seek both.  (T-#150/161-9.I.7:7-9) & (T-#150/161-9.I.8:1-5)

masterpiece:  All humans, and for that matter, all beings everywhere, are God's masterpieces. God creates only perfect masterpieces by giving every Created Mind-being all God's Attributes -- including a completely Free Will to do whatever he or she likes. If we use our Wills to choose to imagine we are separate from God and His Creations we are Free to do so (in imagination) but, by the same token, we are also always Free to rejoin Creation in the Mind of God and say: "My Father and I are One."

How could the Lord of Heaven not be glad if you appreciate His masterpiece [your brother]? What could He do but offer thanks to you who love His Son as He does? Would He not make known to you His Love, if you but share His praise of what He loves? God cherishes creation as the perfect Father that He is. And so His joy is made complete when any part of Him joins in His praise, to share His joy. This brother [anyone you perceive] is His perfect gift to you. And He [God] is glad and thankful when you thank His perfect Son [anyone you perceive] for being what he is. And all His [God's] thanks and gladness shine on you who would complete His joy, along with Him. And thus is yours [your Joy] completed. Not one ray of darkness can be seen by those who will to make their Father's happiness complete, and theirs along with His. The gratitude of God Himself is freely offered to everyone who shares His purpose [of voluntary Universal Loving Oneness]. It is not His Will to be alone. And neither is it yours.  (T-#486/522-25.II.9:all)

mastery:  This word is used here in the sense of mastering a skill, or, more pertinently here, the mastery of Life that rests on Love. Any "masterful" attempt by the ego to manipulate and cajole oneself or others through fear, domination, coercion and attack is useless because it causes the very conflict it seeks to resolve. Fear cannot eliminate fear. Anger cannot eliminate anger. However, wise persistent Love will always heal. This does not mean anyone need be a doormat. Gandhi, for example, was not a doormat, and neither was Mother Teresa who once stopped a civil war in Beruit while she extracted dozens of handicapped and sick children from behind the Green Line, and then flew them out to safety in Cyprus.

It has already been said that you believe you cannot control fear because you yourself made it, and your belief in it seems to render it out of your control. Yet any attempt to resolve the error through attempting the mastery of fear is useless. In fact, it asserts the power of fear by the very assumption that it need be mastered. The true resolution rests entirely on mastery through love. In the interim, however, the sense of conflict is inevitable, since you have placed yourself in a position where you believe in the power of what does not exist. Nothing and everything cannot coexist. To believe in one is to deny the other. Fear is really nothing and love is everything. Whenever light enters darkness, the darkness is abolished.  (T-#28/32-2.VII.4:all) & (T-#28/32-2.VII.5:1-4)

matter (material):  We separated humans are convinced that material matter not only exists as a physical "reality," but also that our bodies and brains are physical. It is a shock to most of us that this is not True because the substance of everything is Spirit. Even quantum physics says "physical objects" do not exist unless they are being observed by a conscious observer. Raj tells us that, "The body, that which all of you can see when you look at each other, that which all of you can see when you look at the orchid or the leaf or the table, is the visibility and tangibility of an idea--an Idea held in the Mind of God. Its substance is Spirit--Pure, Divine Energy." (See below for full quotations)

RAJ: Okay. I demonstrated both the powerlessness of the body [by my resurrection]. I want you to understand that that statement does not mean I demonstrated the non-existence of the body. I demonstrated the powerlessness of the body and the power of the Mind. The body, that which all of you can see when you look at each other, that which all of you can see when you look at the orchid or the leaf or the table, is the visibility and tangibility of an idea--an Idea held in the Mind of God. Its substance is Spirit--Pure, Divine Energy. Now, you turn your back on God and say, "I'd rather see it myself" and this independent stance and the uneasy undercurrent, or the uncomfortable undercurrent, that accompanies the choice to see things in a way that is not natural to you, causes everything to be seen opposite to what it is. And so, instead of Spirit you see substance as matter, purely physical, a presence of something that has nothing to do with God. And so you see your body as material. You see it as an organism, instead of an incredible symphony of... that is actually musical, of the Energy that is Light.  (C-030601/R-21)

It's a long standing habit which we are in the process of breaking. And we're in the process of breaking it by means of your being confronted over and over again with the Truth that you are Conscious Awareness, not the body. That the only thing confronting you is the Kingdom of Heaven, not a physical universe that came from a big bang. That you are the Christ right now, not the mortal sinner you think you are. That you are in a forever State of Invincibility, and not vulnerable. That the Substance of everything you see is Spirit, not matter. And that every thing you see is an Idea, not a physical form, experienced by Mind. And you are that Mind. That Mind is you. That everything going on is purely mental.  (C-041107/R-161)

Oh, in the last two weeks we've talked about the non-materiality of matter, the fact that everything that you see and can touch is pure Spirit and is Idea rather than a physical object, that the Energy of Spirit that constitutes your body is not a physical energy, it is pure Idea.  (C-031123/R-16)

matter (“It does not matter”):  In our world of misperceptions the ego thinks that everything matters, but we are constantly told by the Course that this is all totally unimportant and "does not matter." Below are some of the beliefs we have that come into the category of not mattering. However we still need to rid ourselves of these erroneous beliefs and fantasies so that we may transcend the illusions of the ego and let it vanish back into the nothingness from whence it came. Our only problem is our delusional separation from one another and from God. Love is the only answer to all our problems.

There is, however, no point in giving an answer in terms of the past because the past does not matter, and history would not exist if the same errors were not being repeated in the present.  (T-#51/56-4.II.1:3)

I elected, for your sake and mine, to demonstrate that the most outrageous assault [the crucifixion], as judged by the ego, does not matter.  (T-#86/93-6.I.9:1)

Recognize what does not matter, and if your brothers ask you for something "outrageous," do it because it does not matter.  (T-#206/221-12.III.4:1)

For every dream is but a dream of fear, no matter what the form it seems to take.  (T-#569/612-29.IV.2:2)

Try to recognize that the direction of your fantasies about yourself does not matter.  (W-#53/53-pI.35.5:3)

If you could recognize that your only problem is separation, no matter what form it takes, you could accept the answer because you would see its relevance.  (W-#139/141-pI.79.6:2)

maze:  Our egos twist and distort our little lives here into a senseless maze which we imagine we must diligently negotiate to discover satisfying fulfillments of our ego's goals, wants and wishes. But this maze is a circular, mostly unconscious, "no-exit set-up" within which we constantly chase after endless possessions, special relationships, security, entertainment, toys, distractions, rank, power, thrills, addictions, and excessive food. All this meaningless complexity goes nowhere because its only scheming purpose is to maintain our separation from God and the Sonship. We have to understand that these incessant ego-preoccupations deprive us from Love, Light, Peace, Joy, Knowledge, Beauty, Freedom, Happiness and GOD.

To you who still believe you live in time and know not it is gone, the Holy Spirit still guides you through the infinitely small and senseless maze you still perceive in time, though it has long since gone.  (T-#511/550-26.V.4:1)

While truth is simple, it must still be taught to those who have already lost their way in endless mazes of complexity.  (P-#10/22-2.V.1:1)

me:  (See: I)

meaning:  This word occurs hundreds of times in ACIM, and therefore I have restricted this entry to the meaning of meaning. From our separated viewpoint we distort all meanings because human perception is very constricted and unreliable. We bring all our past training from conception, into the present, with the result that all meanings are colored by the biased opinions, beliefs, attitudes, prejudices, and judgments with which we were indoctrinated by our societies, religions, families, schools, friends and perceived personal enemies.

Therefore, if we are to find the True Meanings of everyone and everything we have to turn to the Holy Spirit Who will very accurately translate to us what these True Meanings are, and these translations will be in language we can easily understand. In effect A Course in Miracles is one such translation.

You may try to "interpret" meaning, but this is always open to error because it refers to the perception of meaning.  (T-#40/45-3.V.5:2)

Laws [the Laws of God and His Creation] must be communicated if they are to be helpful. In effect, they must be translated for those who speak different languages. Nevertheless, a good translator, although he must alter the form of what he translates, never changes the meaning. In fact, his whole purpose is to change the form so that the original meaning is retained. The Holy Spirit is the translator of the laws of God to those who do not understand them. You could not do this yourself because a conflicted mind cannot be faithful to one meaning, and will therefore change the meaning to preserve the form. The Holy Spirit's purpose in translating is exactly the opposite. He translates only to preserve the original meaning in all respects and in all languages. Therefore, He opposes the idea that differences in form are meaningful, emphasizing always that these differences do not matter. The meaning of His message is always the same; only the meaning matters.  (T-#106/115-7.II.4:all) & (T-#106/115-7.II.5:1-4)

meaningless:  Below is a short selection of ACIM quotations referring to what is meaningless. The Course considers everything related to the world of ego is meaningless because only God's Reality is meaningful.

Ultimately, space is as meaningless as time.  (T-#11/14-1.VI.3:5)

To spirit getting is meaningless and giving is all.  (T-#66/73-5.I.1:7)

Both time and delay are meaningless in eternity.  (T-#72/79-5.III.5:2)

Each one must learn to teach that all forms of rejection are meaningless.  (T-#88/95-6.I.18:3)

The Holy Spirit does not want you to understand conflict; He wants you to realize that, because conflict is meaningless, it is not understandable.  (T-#115/124-7.VI.6:5)

In the security of reality, fear is totally meaningless.  (T-#151/162-9.I.9:4)

There is an advantage to bringing nightmares into awareness, but only to teach that they are not real, and that anything they contain is meaningless.  (T-#159/171-9.V.3:1)

Infinity is meaningless without you, and you are meaningless without God.  (T-#181/195-11.I.5:4)

Different realities are meaningless, for reality must be one.  (T-#270/291-14.IX.2:6)

But nothing you have seen begins to show you the enormity of the original error, which seemed to cast you out of Heaven, to shatter knowledge into meaningless bits of disunited perceptions, and to force you to make further substitutions.  (T-#348/373-18.I.5:6)

means (the way by which…):  Forgiveness is the means by which we will remember God, because it is through the process of withdrawing our own ego's projections outward onto others (which is what forgiveness is) and at that moment, recognize the Christ in them, that our healing (and theirs) is accomplished. This process is the means by which we Wake Up.

Forgiveness is the means by which we will remember. Through forgiveness the thinking of the world is reversed. The forgiven world becomes the gate of Heaven, because by its mercy we can at last forgive ourselves. Holding no one prisoner to guilt, we become free. Acknowledging Christ in all our brothers, we recognize His Presence in ourselves. Forgetting all our misperceptions, and with nothing from the past to hold us back, we can remember God. Beyond this, learning cannot go. When we are ready, God Himself will take the final step in our return to Him.  (T-#/xiii-PRE.14:all)

You can defend Truth as well as error. The means are easier to understand after the value of the goal is firmly established. It is a question of what it is for. Everyone defends his treasure, and will do so automatically. The real questions are, what do you treasure, and how much do you treasure it? Once you have learned to consider these questions and to bring them into all your actions, you will have little difficulty in clarifying the means. The means are available whenever you ask. You can, however, save time if you do not protract this step unduly. The correct focus will shorten it immeasurably.  (T-#16/19-2.II.3:all)

means & end:  The ego believes the satisfactions of the body are its end or purpose. We humans are addicted to our bodies in every way – health, sickness, food, pleasures, attractiveness, etc. We work in order to maintain them. We also use our bodies as the means (the way) to attain our goals (ends) for satisfying it. Thus the body, in itself, becomes both the means and end. For example, we exercise (the means) our bodies to keep the body fit and healthy (as our end or goal).

But, in any Holy Instant, through forgiveness, we can cease to perceive ourselves and our brothers as bodies and Know we have a perfectly Loving relationship with them which is eternal. In this changeless relationship means and end are in perfect Harmony because each sees the Spirit of Christ in the other, instead of a mere physical human being. Waking up to the Christ in us all is both the Spiritual means (process) and the Spiritual end (goal). (See: At-one-ment)

The body exists in a world that seems to contain two voices fighting for its possession. In this perceived constellation the body is seen as capable of shifting its allegiance from one to the other, making the concepts of both health and sickness meaningful. The ego makes a fundamental confusion between means and end as it always does. Regarding the body as an end, the ego has no real use for it because it is not an end. You must have noticed an outstanding characteristic of every end that the ego has accepted as its own. When you have achieved it, it has not satisfied you. This is why the ego is forced to shift ceaselessly from one goal to another, so that you will continue to hope it can yet offer you something. It has been particularly difficult to overcome the ego's belief in the body as an end, because it is synonymous with the belief in attack as an end. The ego has a profound investment in sickness. If you are sick, how can you object to the ego's firm belief that you are not invulnerable? This is an appealing argument from the ego's point of view, because it obscures the obvious attack that underlies the sickness. If you recognized this and also decided against attack, you could not give this false witness to the ego's stand.  (T-#144/155-8.VIII.2:all) & (T-#144/155-8.VIII.3:all)

You look upon each holy instant as a different point in time. It never changes. All that it ever held or will ever hold is here right now. The past takes nothing from it, and the future will add no more. Here, then, is everything. Here is the loveliness of your relationship, with means and end in perfect harmony already. Here is the perfect faith that you will one day offer to your brother already offered you; and here the limitless forgiveness you will give him already given, the face of Christ you yet will look upon already seen.  (T-#405/435-20.V.6:all)

mechanisms (of madness):  The major mechanism behind the ego's madness is taking from others, or giving only to get. The ego believes it possesses what it has taken, and its highest priority is to acquire as much as it can in any situation. How many of us would work steadily if we did not receive money, or praise, or recognition, or personal ego-satisfactions. Not infrequently parents will emotionally reject their children if they are consistently naughty or disobedient. In other words in our egoic special relationships we demand reciprocity of satisfaction or the arrangement is off. Enemies are just people who are continually estranged because each person (or side) perceives the other as trying to take something away, such as freedom, possessions, land, family, money, affections, etc. Enemies may also be seen as causing you mental or physical pain. Of course, we are always the innocent ones, the victims of these other nasty people who attack us to get something from us.

The ego values only what it takes. This leads to the fourth law of chaos, which, if the others are accepted, must be true. This seeming law is the belief you have what you have taken. By this, another's loss becomes your gain, and thus it fails to recognize that you can never take away save from yourself. Yet all the other laws must lead to this. For enemies do not give willingly to one another, nor would they seek to share the things they value. And what your enemies would keep from you must be worth having, because they keep it hidden from your sight. All of the mechanisms of madness are seen emerging here: The "enemy" made strong by keeping hidden the valuable inheritance that should be yours; your justified position and attack for what has been withheld; and the inevitable loss the enemy must suffer to save yourself. Thus do the guilty ones protest their "innocence." Were they not forced into this foul attack by the unscrupulous behavior of the enemy, they would respond with only kindness. But in a savage world the kind cannot survive, so they must take or else be taken from.  (T-#456/491-23.II.9:all) & (T-#457/491-23.II.10:all)

meditation: This is a huge topic, and I recommend you read the Section on this Site on Meditation. However, the ACIM quotation below is a perfect statement (by Jesus) describing the perfect meditation. It is from the Workbook Lesson 189.

Simply do this: Be still, and lay aside all thoughts of what you are and what God is; all concepts you have learned about the world; all images you hold about yourself. Empty your mind of everything it thinks is either true or false, or good or bad, of every thought it judges worthy, and all the ideas of which it is ashamed. Hold onto nothing. Do not bring with you one thought the past has taught, nor one belief you ever learned before from anything. Forget this world, forget this course, and come with wholly empty hands unto your God.

Is it not He Who knows the way to you? You need not know the way to Him. Your part is simply to allow all obstacles that you have interposed between the Son and God the Father to be quietly removed forever. God will do His part in joyful and immediate response. Ask and receive. But do not make demands, nor point the road to God by which He should appear to you. The way to reach Him is merely to let Him be. For in that way is your reality proclaimed as well.

And so today we do not choose the way in which we go to Him. But we do choose to let Him come. And with this choice we rest. And in our quiet hearts and open minds, His Love will blaze its pathway of itself. What has not been denied is surely there, if it be true and can be surely reached. God knows His Son, and knows the way to him. He does not need His Son to show Him how to find His way. Through every opened door His Love shines outward from its home within, and lightens up the world in innocence.

[Prayer]  Father, we do not know the way to You. But we have called, and You have answered us. We will not interfere. Salvation's ways are not our own, for they belong to You. And it is unto You we look for them. Our hands are open to receive Your gifts. We have no thoughts we think apart from You, and cherish no beliefs of what we are, or Who created us. Yours is the way that we would find and follow. And we ask but that Your Will, which is our own as well, be done in us and in the world, that it become a part of Heaven now.  (W-#350/360-pI.189.7:all) & (W-#350/360-pI.189.8:all) & (W-#350/360-pI.189.9:all) & (W-#350/360-pI.189.10:1-9)

meeting:  In spiritual terms we humans seem separated from each other because we believe we are isolated egos in bodies who can only meet through physical processes such as speech and touch and other methods of sensing. Even our communication by language is mediated by sound waves or writing. Judgments and prejudices exacerbate this false belief in separateness. However, when we truly Love one another without judgment, the Course tells us we will feel a tremendous release and deep peace. In Reality, even in this world, we can allow ourselves to experience "The holy meeting place of the unseparated Father and His Son(s)" within our Minds, where "Unbroken and uninterrupted Love flows constantly between the Father and the Son." This Communication is direct and unmediated. (See: altar)

You have no idea of the tremendous release and deep peace that comes from meeting yourself and your brothers totally without judgment.  (T-#42/47-3.VI.3:1)

He [the Holy Spirit or Right Mind] shines not in division, but in the meeting place where God, united with His Son, speaks to His Son through Him. Communication between what cannot be divided cannot cease. The holy meeting place of the unseparated Father and His Son lies in the Holy Spirit and in you. All interference in the communication that God Himself wills with His Son is quite impossible here. Unbroken and uninterrupted love flows constantly between the Father and the Son, as Both would have it be. And so it is.  (T-#269/289-14.VIII.2:11-16)

melting-in:  We can find Peace and Love by utilizing the Holy Instant during meditation (see above) by melting in to inner stillness with an expectant open mind and a keen desire to know God. This meditation method is also stated in Psalm 46:10 "Be still and know I am God."

memory, memory of God:  Even though we seem to have obliterated our memory of God, He is in our memories and we can never truly forget Him. If we ask to Wake Up into our full Consciousness of God we must want only that experience and give up all ego.

Give up gladly everything that would stand in the way of your remembering, for God is in your memory.  (T-#170/183-10.II.2:4)

Because of your Father's Love you can never forget Him, for no one can forget what God Himself placed in his memory.  (T-#218/234-12.VIII.4:1)

Yet His memory shines in your mind and cannot be obliterated.  (T-#218/234-12.VIII.4:7)

You have but to ask for this memory, and you will remember.  (T-#218/234-12.VIII.5:1)

mercy, merciful:  God is infinitely Merciful and never punishes or condemns, and if we are to Wake Up, we must always extend (give unconditionally) this same mercy to everyone and everything. We erroneously think the world is outside us, outside our minds, but it is a projection of a very sophisticated fearful internal dream we superimpose on God's Creation in each Holy Instant. The Universe of Universes is inside God's Mind-as-Such as Ideas which we share with Him in a Singularity we call manifested Creation. (see: Creation)

And to this world [of ego] must you adjust as long as you believe this picture is outside, and has you at its mercy. This world is merciless, and were it outside you, you should indeed be fearful. Yet it was you who made it merciless, and now if mercilessness seems to look back at you, it can be corrected.  (T-#400/430-20.III.5:7-9)

God offers only mercy. Your words should reflect only mercy, because that is what you have received and that is what you should give. (T-#43/48-3.VI.6:1-2)

merit:  The ego has within it a Parental Authority System (PAS) which was incorporated (introjected) into the ego-mind during adolescence after we had suffered from parental control from babyhood through puberty. The main weapons of the inner PAS are control, fear, guilt, punishment and perhaps a few rewards. All this PAS nonsense, although it comes from the past, still controls our lives, especially through guilt, self-judgment and punishment. In the name of the PAS we "beat up" on ourselves for perceived failures, mistakes, sins, and misbehaviors, and all of these transgressions, too, were learned and set in concrete long ago during childhood. Some adult people even commit suicide as a result, but most of us punish ourselves with illness and adversity. Yet our guilt and shame make us feel we certainly merit these and other punishments that the PAS will cause.

Do not underestimate the intensity of the ego's drive for vengeance on the past. It is completely savage and completely insane. For the ego remembers everything you have done that has offended it, and seeks retribution of you. The fantasies it brings to its chosen relationships in which to act out its hate are fantasies of your destruction. For the ego holds the past against you, and in your escape from the past it [the ego] sees itself deprived of the vengeance it believes you so justly merit. Yet without your alliance in your own destruction, the ego could not hold you to the past. In the special relationship you are allowing your destruction to be. That this is insane is obvious. But what is less obvious is that the present is useless to you while you pursue the ego's goal as its ally. (T-#324/348-16.VII.3:all)

message, messenger:  There are two messengers, our inner Holy Spirit and the ego, and each gives to other people its own brand of messages. The Holy Spirit communicates with others by sending them messages of Love and guiltlessness, while the ego sends out distorted messages of hatred, guilt and attack. Below are some samples of each. The message and the messenger are the same in the sense that the Holy Spirit is Real Love, but the ego (even when being "nice") is made of the emotions of fear and hatred.

The only message of the crucifixion is that you can overcome the cross.  (T-#47/52-4.IN.3:8)

The Holy Spirit teaches you to use your body only to reach your brothers, so He can teach His message through you.  (T-#145/157-8.VIII.9:1)

Everyone has a special part to play in the Atonement, but the message given to each one is always the same; God's Son is guiltless.  (T-#262/282-14.V.2:1)

Its bleak sight is distorted, and the messages it transmits to you who made it to limit your awareness are little and limited, and so fragmented they are meaningless.  (T-#367/394-18.IX.2:5)

Who would send messages of hatred and attack if he but understood he sends them to himself?  (T-#387/415-19.IV.B.14:11)

Consciousness is the receptive mechanism, receiving messages from above or below; from the Holy Spirit or the ego.  (C-#75*76/79*80-1.7:3)

The message and the messenger are one.  (T-#483/519-25.I.2:6)

The messengers of God perform their part by their acceptance of His messages as for themselves, and show they understand the messages by giving them away.  (W-#282/289-pI.154.7:2)

mind, Mind:  Each of us is a Mind within the Mind-as-Such of God. It is difficult for most humans in a state of ego to grasp the Essence of what Mind-as-Such is, even though we use our Minds all the time—in fact our Minds-as-such are our Created Being/Identity as Sons of God's Mind-as-Such.  The actual term "Mind-as-such" is not used explicitly in the course, but it is roughly equivalent to the word "Mind" in the phrase, "The Absolute Mind of God." A deeper definition is given below. The word "Mind" with a capital "M" covers the Mind of the Christ-Self, the individual Minds and collective Mind of the Sonship, the Mind of the Holy Spirit and the Mind of God when Thinking Real Thoughts.  This entry on "mind/Mind" calls for extended study rather than a quick reading.

Unfortunately, popular usage has broadened the meanings of the word "mind" to such an extent that the term has become synonymous with ego (my noisy mind), with polarities (an evil or good mind), with bodies (my body has a mind of its own, or "awareness of the inner body is consciousness"), with insanity (he is of unsound mind), with intelligence (he is simple-minded) and with spiritual states (higher mind, right mind). Yet, because the word "mind" is essential to the Course (it is used over 1770 times), to psychology and to spiritual pursuits, we must find a way to make sure its meaning in any given context for the use of the word mind is truly understood, and the best way to do this is to use it with qualifying adjectives and/or capital letters. Using an initial capital (i.e., Mind) always indicates the Mind of God, of Spirit, of the Higher Self, etc.

The explanations set out below begin with Mind-as-such and then continue with additional commentaries on God's Mind and how our Minds and other "minds" interrelate with His, and with one another. These explanations may present new territory for some people, but understanding their meanings will help clarify much of the more esoteric content of the course. Note that this entry on mind/Mind is more suited to extended study than to a quick reading.

Mind-as-such means Pure Mind-Beingness, Which is The Absolute and Primary Reality, The Ultimate Source, The Only Creative Principle, The Only Living Entity, The Only Being that Exists. Mind-as-such is, by definition, subjectively Aware of Itself as Mind. Mind-as-such is also inherently Creative, and this characteristic will be discussed later.

GOD is Mind-as-such and God's One Mind-as-such is literally the only Mind there is; no Minds exist outside the Mind of God because God's Mind-as-Such is indivisibly One, the Only One. Mind-as-such is changeless, timeless and limitless. Nothing can ever be added to the Mind of God and nothing can be subtracted from His Mind-as-such. Everything Real is within the Mind-as-such of God.

God's Mind-as-such has one Supreme Attribute, namely Thinking, and God's Mind-as-such (and each of ours) has three ways or avenues of Thinking. They are (1) emotion/feeling (2) motivation/will (3) cognition/reason/intellect. These three ways of thinking are NOT mutually exclusive; they can occur singly or in any combination, in any Now-moment.

God's only emotion is Limitless, Continuous, Maximal Love, and because God Thinks it, His Love is Real. God's Love is an eternal Idea, thought by His Mind-as-such.

God's only motivation is His Infallible, Constant, Incontrovertible Will, and because God Thinks it, His Will is Real. God's Will is an eternal Idea thought by His Mind-as-such.

God's only cognition is All-Knowing Awareness plus Perfect, Infallible, Infinite Reason or Reasoning Intelligence. All God's Reasonings (intrinsic to Thinking His Thoughts) are Real. God's Reasoning Intelligence is a Real Idea (as a system or program) thought by God's Mind-as-such. (Note that even in this world of ego our thoughts and thinking processes do have embedded operational levels, as for example in mathematics or computers.)

God's Thinking is also Creative in the sense that His Thinking is the Prime Creator, and What He Thinks is always Real. The Sons that God Creates by Thinking are made of His Own Mind-as-such. To put this in more understandable words let us say that God-as-Father Creates His Mind-Sons or Mind-Children by "encapsulating" a "piece" of His Own Mind-as-such by surrounding it with Love. God then gives that newly Created Mind-Being an "individualized" Mind-Identity as a Son of God within His Mind-as-such. Each Created Mind-Being (Son) has all the Attributes of God because these came with the Love-encased "piece" of God's Mind-as-such, and it is these God-given Attributes that the course refers to as "our inheritance." Thus the Minds-as-such of God's Sons are identical to the Mind-as-such of God except for the Fact that God Created His Children and His Children cannot create their Father! However, like God, the Sons can Create Mind-Beings within their Minds-as-such and give them individualized Beinghood within the Mind-of God, and the Sons' Creations are equally Sons of God. All Creation of Mind-Beings in the Mind of God (by God and His Sins) is always on-going in the Now Instant; as Mind-Beings we are being continuously Created moment-by-moment by the Father.  (Note that this description of the Creation of Eternal Mind-Beings has nothing to do with bodies, physical reproduction or form, all of which came much later in the imagined separation—which itself is still continuing in pseudo-time, right now!)

God's Mind-Being-Sons and their Mind-Being-Sons are all guaranteed Eternal Beinghood (Mind-Life) within the Mind of God, by God. God gives all His Children (and Children's Children) Eternal Life by continuously Thinking of each one of them, and this is the reason the course says we are (as eternal Mind-Beings in Him) Thoughts of God. One startling implication of the Creation by God of Mind-Beings-as-Sons (made of His Mind within His Mind) is that the "piece" of God's Mind-as-Such that each one is, always existed as God's Mind-as-Such; thus only the "encapsulation" with Love and the bestowal of individualized Sonship-Identity was "new." How many Mind-Beings-as-Sons has God Created, including those Created by His Sons? We are told that, Creation is the sum of all God’s Thoughts, in number infinite, and everywhere without all limit. (W-pII.11.1:1). Even so, God Knows each one of His Sons, His Sons all Know one another, and they all Know God. Each of God's Children has unlimited access to the Whole of God's Mind-as-Such.

Real Love is a totally transparent and open Idea of God, therefore all Mind-Beings, including God, are in continuous Peaceful Loving Communion with each other. Active thought-communication can occur whenever any Mind-Beings wish it, while God, as our Source of Mind-Life, shares All of Himself with us non-stop. Other Ideas of God given us by God at our individualized Creation by Him are Real Peace, Joy, Happiness, Innocence, Freedom, a Free Will, Strength, Power, and Knowledge—all of which are eternal Ideas inherent in His Mind-as-such and in our Minds-as-such within His. The course tells us frequently that Ideas/ideas cannot leave their Source/source, therefore we still have them.

The separation occurred when some of God's Sons decided to usurp the Power of God and make their own kingdom apart from Him. These prodigal Sons wanted "to do their own thing" away from the Mind of God, but in no way could that Really happen— because Existence outside God's Mind-as-such is impossible. However, God gave His Children His Own Free Will, and so the only solution to this paradox was for these recalcitrant Sons to fall asleep right there in God's Mind and dream they were "living" in a dreamworld of their own making. Of course, God did not participate in these dreams because they are fictitious forms of nothing based on the pseudo-emotions of fear and guilt. Note that it was the minds of the separating Sons of God that decided (by false reasoning) to separate, at which point each of those minds became dissociated into two disconnected sections, one part (the Christ-Self) remained (and remains) Awake while the other part fell asleep to dream distorted dreams. This second part, which we can call "the separated mind-self" only dreams it is "awake."

What is ego? In this fearful dreamworld-of-separation, we made an artificial identity out of an on-going loose system of insane ideas and beliefs we now call the ego. This chaotic construction is like an unstable house of cards built on the shifting sands of imagination—a house of cards in which we think we hide from God. Subsequently, our separated mind-selves, in collusion with the ego, then manifested biological bodies as an even lower "physical" identification so that we could always look downward (away from God and Mind) and fixate on unreal three-dimensional activity in an environment of manifested forms. Our obsession with the physical world of ego and our identification with it, locks us firmly into our dream-separation from the Mind of God. Yet all the time we are merely fast asleep in His Mind dreaming illusory dreams founded on fear, guilt and special relationships. Note that God does not share our fictitious thoughts, dreams and fantasies. It is important to realize that, strictly speaking, the so-called "ego-mind" is not made of mind/Mind at all. Ideas, beliefs, concepts and the like are generated by mind/Mind and contained within mind/Mind but they are not Mind-as-such. A very imperfect analogy would be your computer; the hardware is like Mind-as-such (or mind/Mind ) while the programs and data files are like the ideas, beliefs and concepts which can be removed, changed, or added to as you go along. The ego is made of removable, changeable ideas, beliefs and self-concepts. Fortunately, the ego's habits, its memory content and its operating systems (a conglomeration of programs) can be uninstalled from mind/Mind! However, we cannot delete the Real ideas (e.g., Love) and Real Programs (e.g., the At-one-ment Plan or Process) of God from our Minds; as egos we can only dissociate them temporarily in pseudo-time.

The importance of identity/Identity: Our false "identity" is a fabricated idea made by our separated mind-selves to overlay our True Identity as God's Sons. Using this spurious self-concept we can adopt any one identity, or a set of false identities. Within the dreamworld we have made we can identify with (a) our bodies, (b) our egos, or more rarely (c) our separated selves. Inside each of these identities we can proliferate numerous polarized sub-identities such as, for example, physical sickness-health, the ego's poverty-wealth, and the humility-arrogance of the separated self. In Reality, however, our only True Identity is one we did not make, namely our Christ-Son-Self. All our imagined false identities have to be relinquished if we intend to Wake-up.

Control, willfulness, taking credit, pride, power, manipulation, false humility, etcetera, are all the ego's ploys to keep it in business (to keep the false identification going), and to keep intact its insane dreamworld of fear, sin and guilt. If we are to reunite with our Higher Selves (the Christ-in-us) and the Sonship, and re-experience the Mind of God, we have to say quite unequivocally, "Thy Will only Father, not mine!" This is only accomplished by stilling the meaningless chatter, antics and preoccupations of the ego-"mind" so we can listen to the Voice for God, the Holy Spirit, Who may come through as our Master-Guides (Awakened Companions/Angels) or Jesus. By persisting in the meditative practice of mind-stillness and silence we will re-open ourselves to God's Mind and His Voice, and soon experience Peace, Bliss/Joy, Love, and Knowledge—in that unfolding order. (See: creation, identity, stillness, will)

God's Mind-as-such brought our Minds into Being: His Mind [God's Mind-as-such] shone on you in your creation and brought your [Real] mind into being. His Mind still shines on you and must shine through you. (T-4.IV.9:4-5)

God Created all Minds Whole: He [the unhealed healer] has not learned that every mind God created is equally worthy of being healed because God created it whole. You are merely asked to return to God the mind as He created it. (T-5.VII.2:5-6)

God gives all our Minds access to All of His Mind-as-such: By not being separate, the Mind of God is established in ours [our Minds] and as ours. This [One] Mind is invincible because it is undivided. (T-8.V.1:7-8)

You dwell [as eternal Minds] in the Mind of God with your brother, for God Himself did not will to be alone. (T-11.I.1:6)

Absolute Pure Mind-as-such is changeless: This [changing of our ego "minds"] in no way contradicts the changelessness of mind [our Minds-as-such] as God created it, but you think [imagine] that you have changed it as long as you learn through the ego. This places you in a position of needing to learn a lesson that seems contradictory;—you must learn to change your mind [your ego's thinking] about your [Real] mind. Only by this can you learn that it [Mind-as-such] is changeless. (T-7.V.7:7-9)

All Knowledge is in our Minds-as-such: You are an aspect of knowledge, being in the Mind of God, Who knows you. All [God's and the Sonship's] knowledge must be yours, for in you [as a Son of God] is all knowledge. (T-13.VIII.2:3-4)

God shares all His Thoughts with all His Sons, including the Holy Spirit who is a Thought of God: Apart from the Father and the Son, the Holy Spirit has no function. He is not separate from either, being in the Mind of Both, and knowing that Mind is one. He is a Thought of God, and God has given Him to you because He has no Thoughts He does not share. (T-13.VIII.4:1-3)

The Thought of God surrounds your little kingdom [of separation and egos], waiting at the barrier you built to come inside and shine upon the barren ground. (T-18.VIII.9:1)

God is the Mind-as-such with which we think, and He shares all His Thoughts with us, as we share all our Real Thoughts with Him: You think with the Mind of God. Therefore you share your thoughts with Him, as He shares His with you. They are the same thoughts, because they are thought by the same Mind. To share is to make alike, or to make one. Nor do the thoughts you think with the Mind of God leave your mind, because thoughts do not leave their source. Therefore, your thoughts are in the Mind of God, as you are. They are in your mind as well, where He is. As you are part of His Mind, so are your [Real] thoughts part of His Mind. (W-pI.45.2:all)

God Created us in Perfect Love: That is how God Himself created you; in understanding, in appreciation and in love. (T-7.V.9:5)

[Father] I am surrounded by Your Love, forever still, forever gentle and forever safe. God’s Son must be as You created him. (W-pII.272.1:7-8)

Out of love he [The Son] was created, and in love he abides. Goodness and mercy have always followed him, for he has always extended the Love of his Father. (T-13.I.6:6-7)

For it is not your Father’s Will that you should offer or receive less than He gave, when He created you in perfect love. (T-26.II.8:6)

Father, Your Mind created all that is, Your Spirit entered into it, Your Love gave life to it. (W-pII.263.1:1)

We are "encapsulated" in the Love of God: The Love of God surrounds His Son whom the god of crucifixion [the ego] condemns. (T-11.VI.7:2)

The world about him shines with love because God placed him in Himself where pain is not, and love surrounds him without end or flaw. Disturbance of his peace can never be. In perfect sanity he looks on love, for it is all about him and within him. (T-13.VII.7:3-5)

God's Love and Joy surround us: How can I suffer when love and joy surround me through Him? (W-pI.rI.59.1:5)

Surrounding me is everlasting Love. I have no cause for anything except the perfect peace and joy I share with You [Father]. (W-pII.348.1:2-3)

Each of us is surrounded by God's Love and by God Himself:  I am surrounded by the Love of God. Father, You stand before me and behind, beside me, in the place I see myself, and everywhere I go. (W-pII.264.Heading) & (W-pII.264.1:1)

God Created us of Mind-Light and in Mind-Light, and we are "encapsulated" in His Great Mind-Light: Walk in light and do not see the dark companions [the ego and separated self, fear, etc.,] for they are not fit companions for the Son of God, who was created of light and in light. The Great Light always surrounds you and shines out from you. (T-11.III.4:6-7)

God watches over him and light surrounds him. (T-13.XI.9:7)

You are surrounded only by Him [God]. What limits can there be on you whom He encompasses? (T-18.VI.10:6-7)

All Sons of God share the Attributes and Life of God, the Creator: And in the Mind of God there is no ending, nor a time in which His Thoughts [the Sonship] were absent or could suffer change. Thoughts [Sons] are not born and cannot die. They share the attributes of their creator, nor have they a separate life apart from his. The [Real] thoughts you think are in your [Real] mind, as you are in the Mind Which thought of you. And so there are no separate parts in what exists within God’s Mind. It is forever one, eternally united and at peace. (T-30.III.6:4-9)

Love created me like Itself; I am not a body: Love created me like Itself. I am in the likeness of my Creator. I cannot suffer, I cannot experience loss and I cannot die. I am not a body. I would recognize my reality today. (W-pI.rII.84.1:1-5)

Perfect Love is an Idea in the Mind of God, and Perfect Love only gives: In the world of scarcity, love has no meaning and peace is impossible. For gain and loss are both accepted, and so no one is aware that perfect love is in him. In the holy instant you recognize the idea of love in you, and unite this idea with the Mind that thought it, and could not relinquish it. By holding it within itself, there is no loss. The holy instant thus becomes a lesson in how to hold all of your brothers in your mind, experiencing not loss but completion. From this it follows you can only give. And this is love, for this alone is natural under the laws of God. (T-15.VI.5:1-7)

Love Knows no bodies and is completely impartial: Love knows no bodies, and reaches to everything created like itself. Its total lack of limit is its meaning. It is completely impartial in its giving, encompassing only to preserve and keep complete what it would give. (T-18.VIII.8:1-3)

God placed His Will in our Minds and keeps it alive until we reconnect with it through the At-one-ment process of Waking up: Your [Real] will is still in you because God placed it in your [Real] mind, and although you can keep it [Will] asleep you cannot obliterate it. God Himself keeps your will alive by transmitting it from His Mind to yours as long as there is time. The miracle itself is a reflection of this union of will between Father and Son. (T-5.II.1:5-7)

Our Wills are the Will of the Father because the Father's Will is His Son—in the sense, God Wills us to BE: There is no confusion in the mind of a Son of God, whose will must be the Will of the Father, because the Father’s Will is His Son. Miracles are in accord with the Will of God, Whose Will you do not know because you [as egos] are confused about what you will. This means that you are confused about what you are [egos or Sons of God]. If you are God’s Will and do not accept His Will, you are denying joy. (T-7.X.7:4) & (T-7.X.8:1-3)

If we only Knew what God Wills for us our Joy would be Complete: O my child, if you knew what God wills for you, your joy would be complete! And what He wills has happened, for it was always true. When the light comes and you have said, “God’s Will is mine,” you will see such beauty that you will know it is not of you. Out of your joy you will create beauty in His Name, for your joy could no more be contained than his. The bleak little world will vanish into nothingness, and your heart will be so filled with joy that it will leap into Heaven, and into the Presence of God. (T-11.III.3:1-5)

Real Mind Communication is Natural, Universal and Abstract (and not concrete form like language): This [Real] communication is the Will of God. Creation and [Real] communication are synonymous. God created every mind by communicating His Mind to it, thus establishing it forever as a channel for the reception of His Mind and Will. Since only beings of a like order can truly communicate, His creations naturally communicate with Him and like Him. This communication is perfectly abstract, since its quality is universal in application and not subject to any judgment, any exception or any alteration. God created you by this and for this. (T-4.VII.3:5-10)

Reason lies in the Mind of our Real Selves and the Holy Spirit, and not the ego: You do not realize the whole extent to which the idea of separation has interfered with reason. Reason lies in the other self [the Christ-Self] you have cut off from your awareness. And nothing you have allowed to stay in your awareness is capable of reason. How can the [ego-] segment of the mind devoid of reason understand what reason is, or grasp the information it would give? All sorts of questions may arise in it, but if the basic question stems from reason, it will not ask it. Like all that stems from reason, the basic question is obvious, simple and remains unasked. But think not reason could not answer it. (T-21.V.4:all)

Reason is a means that serves the Holy Spirit’s purpose in its own right. (T-21.V.7:10)

We have in us the Knowledge that we are purely Mind-as-such Beings Created out of Love: What has been given you? The knowledge that you are a mind, in Mind and purely mind, sinless forever, wholly unafraid, because you were created out of Love. Nor have you left your Source, remaining as you were created. This was given you as knowledge which you cannot lose. (W-pI.158.1:1-4)

Fear is the misperception that we have usurped the Power of God by separating from Him, and by making our own dreamworld: All fear is ultimately reducible to the basic misperception that you have the ability to usurp the power of God. Of course, you neither can nor have been able to do this. Here is the real basis for your escape from fear. The escape is brought about by your acceptance of the Atonement, which enables you to realize that your errors never really occurred. (T-2.I.4:1-4)

Our egos try to usurp all the functions of God and interpret them falsely according to its wants: It [the ego] tries to usurp all the functions of God as it perceives them, because it recognizes that only total allegiance can be trusted. The ego cannot oppose the laws of God any more than you can, but it can interpret them according to what it wants, just as you can. (T-5.V.5:9) & (T-5.V.6:1)

As egos in this world of dreams we have dissociated ourselves from our Real Selves: Your other [Real] life [as a Christ] has continued without interruption, and has been and always will be totally unaffected by your attempts to dissociate it. (T-4.VI.1:7)

We have dissociated ourselves from our Real Wholeness, Sanity, and limitless Power: The oneness of the Creator and the creation is your wholeness, your sanity and your limitless power. This limitless power is God’s gift to you, because it is what you are [as the Son]. If you dissociate your mind from it you are perceiving the most powerful force in the universe as if it were weak, because you do not believe you are part of it. (T-7.VI.10:4-6)

Dissociation is a distorted process of thinking whereby two systems of belief which cannot coexist are both maintained. (T-14.VII.4:3)

Our individualized Identities as Sons lies in God, the Father and the Sonship: Think not that you can change Their dwelling place. For your Identity abides in Them, [God, the Father, and the Son] and where They are, forever must you be. The changelessness of Heaven is in you, so deep within that nothing in this world but passes by, unnoticed and unseen. The still infinity of endless peace surrounds you gently in its soft embrace, so strong and quiet, tranquil in the might of its Creator, nothing can intrude upon the sacred Son of God within. (T-29.V.2:all)

Miracles heal by affirming our Spirit-Identification as Sons of God: Miracles praise God through you. They praise Him by honoring His creations, affirming their perfection. They heal because they deny body-identification and affirm spirit-identification. (T-1.I.29:all)

Our egos identify closely with our bodies: But fear of the body, with which the ego identifies so closely, makes no sense at all. The body is the ego’s home by its own election. It is the only identification with which the ego feels safe, since the body’s vulnerability is its own best argument that you cannot be of God. This is the belief that the ego sponsors eagerly. (T-4.V.3:4) & (T-4.V.4:1-3)

The ego is a confusion in identification [between itself and the body]. (T-7.VIII.4:7)

In our identification with our egos we see ourselves as guilty and "worthy" of punishment: We spoke before of the authority problem as based on the concept of usurping God’s power. The ego believes that this is what you did because it believes that it is you. If you identify with the ego, you must perceive yourself as guilty. Whenever you respond to your ego you will experience guilt, and you will fear punishment. The ego is quite literally a fearful thought. However ridiculous the idea of attacking God may be to the sane mind, never forget that the ego is not sane. (T-5.V.3:3-8)

Self-blame is therefore ego identification, and as much an ego defense as blaming others. (T-11.IV.5:5)

Our True Identification with the Kingdom is beyond question: Your mind is dividing its allegiance between two kingdoms, and you are totally committed to neither. Your identification with the Kingdom is totally beyond question except by you, when you are thinking insanely. What you are [a God-Created Son of God] is not established by your perception, and is not influenced by it at all. (T-7.VI.9:1-3)

Your One identification is with the Father and with the Son: Your identification is with the Father and with the Son. It cannot be with one and not the other. If you are part of one you must be part of the other, because they are one. (T-8.IV.8:6-8)

Identify with Love as your Safety and you are Home: Love is your safety. Fear does not exist. Identify with love, and you are safe. Identify with love, and you are home. Identify with love, and find your Self. (W-pII.5.5:4-8)

Silence the ego's thinking in a Holy Instant of Stillness and hear new answers (Guidance) from the Holy Spirit: The holy instant is the interval in which the mind is still enough to hear an answer that is not entailed within the question asked. It offers something new and different from the question. (T-27.IV.6:9-10)

The miracle comes quietly into the mind/Mind that stops an Instant and is Still: The miracle comes quietly into the mind that stops an instant and is still. It reaches gently from that quiet time, and from the mind it healed in quiet then, to other minds to share its quietness. And they will join in doing nothing to prevent its radiant extension back into the Mind Which caused all minds to be. (T-28.I.11:1-3)

Identify with your Still Peaceful Mind and hear God's Voice: Try to identify with the part of your mind where stillness and peace reign forever. Try to hear God’s Voice call to you lovingly, reminding you that your Creator has not forgotten His Son. (W-pI.49.2:5-6)

Let all my ego-thinking stop and in the Peaceful Silence hear God's Voice: Peace to my mind. Let all my thoughts be still. Father, I come to You today to seek the peace that You alone can give. I come in silence. In the quiet of my heart, the deep recesses of my mind, I wait and listen for Your Voice. My Father, speak to me today. (W-pII.221.Heading) & (W-pII.221.1:1-4)

mine:  This entry contains the personal self-references of Jesus that include the word "mine," but in the final quotation the word "Mine" refers to God Who is speaking to us directly through Jesus. This set of quotations was not listed in the Companion entry on "Jesus." Detailed explanations of their content are unnecessary because key words in the quotations can be looked up in the Companion separately. One or two introductory key words introduce the topic of each quotation. (See: Jesus)

Miracles: The miracle acknowledges everyone as your brother and mine [Jesus]. It is a way of perceiving the universal mark of God. (T-1.I.40:all)

Safety: You are perfectly safe as long as you are completely unconcerned about your readiness, but maintain a consistent trust in mine [Jesus]. (T-2.V.4:2)

Making choices: Before you choose to do anything, ask me if your choice is in accord with mine [Jesus]. If you are sure that it is, there will be no fear. (T-2.VI.4:9-10)

Power, Strength: There is no limit to the power of a Son of God, but he can limit the expression of his power as much as he chooses. Your mind and mine [Jesus] can unite in shining your ego away, releasing the strength of God into everything you think and do. (T-4.IV.8:2-3)

Joint decisions: Your mind is the means by which you determine your own condition, because mind is the mechanism of decision. It is the power by which you separate or join, and experience pain or joy accordingly. My decision cannot overcome yours, because yours is as powerful as mine [Jesus]. If it were not so the Sons of God would be unequal. All things are possible through our joint decision, but mine alone cannot help you. Your will is as free as mine [Jesus], and God Himself would not go against it. (T-8.IV.5:7-12)

Will: By the belief that your will is separate from mine [Jesus], you are exempting yourself from the Will of God which is yourself. (T-8.V.2:3)

Joining Minds: By joining your mind with mine [Jesus] you are signifying your awareness that the Will of God is one. (T-8.V.2:12)

Brothers: You do not perceive your brothers as the Holy Spirit does, because you do not regard bodies solely as a means of joining minds and uniting them with yours and mine [Jesus]. (T-8.VII.2:5)

God asks our help: Help Me [God] to wake My children from the dream of retribution and a little life beset with fear, that ends so soon it might as well have never been. Let Me instead remind you of eternity, in which your joy grows greater as your love extends along with Mine beyond infinity, where time and distance have no meaning. (S-3.IV.8:1-2)

minimize:  The ego relentlessly uses an important psychological mechanism to maintain its fundamental fear-based structure. This mechanism is to make us so afraid of fear that we always hasten to get rid of it obliquely; we avoid fear by side-stepping around it. Yet the course tells us we must look at fear openly and face it down if we are to rid ourselves of it permanently. A parallel avoidance-of-fear device used by the ego is to minimize our fearful apprehensions whenever possible, thus dismissing the fear as a minor matter that does not require any closer examination or eradication; after all, does not fear keep us safe in a dangerous world, and does it not do that more effectively than the Holy Spirit? How, then, do we look at our fears openly and squarely, and eradicate them? This calls for a multiple approach, that includes a belief in the Presence of the Holy Spirit, some courage and trust, and a true willingness to be rid of the ego and its fears. The actual procedural steps for overcoming fear and panic is as follows:

1. When you feel any specific fear or panic coming on (about, for example, relationships, disease, death, money, disasters, loneliness, rejection, etc.,) try to find a place at home where you can be alone for a little while.

2. Ask the Holy Spirit to be with you as you face your fear, then feel the fear openly by welcoming it and letting it overwhelm you as much as it wants. This takes courage, faith and trust.

3. Welcome and stay with this overwhelming fear, feeling it freely without any reservations. Keep "thinking of" the situation that arouses the fear so that the fear keeps flowing—you do not want it to wane for extraneous reasons of avoidance. Rather the whole idea is to keep the fear or panic flowing through you until it wanes of its own accord, even though you keep on inviting it to continue non-stop.

4.  When, despite all your best efforts to keep the fear flowing through you, it wanes and dwindles of its own accord, give the fear and the whole scenario that caused it, to the Holy Spirit to take and shine away.

5. If you have done this fear-dismantling practice without reservations, you will now feel a sense of relief and peace into which you can let yourself sink and so feel the Presence of the Holy Spirit within your Mind.

6. Understand this fear-eliminating exercise may take many repetitions because the ego was built over millions of years and we find it difficult to relinquish it in one Holy Instant.

However, there are other factors we can call on to help us dismantle the ego along with its fears. We must withdraw our ego-projections onto others by forgiving them and realizing that any negative events involving them never happened in Reality; they happened only in this unreal world of ego and separation. As we let our fears and projections go, our Vision of this world and our relationships here changes to one of right-mindedness in which Love replaces fear, "sin," guilt and hate. This is when miracles happen because the Holy Spirit contracts time by minimizing it, and shifts us out of the horizontal, bipolar ego-system to a vertical path that moves us up the levels of spiritual change into right-mindedness and Vision.

Always remember that fear is not real and that in Truth, there is nothing to fear. But this does not mean we can simply ignore it (without facing it) at the ego-polarity level because that would mean we do think it real. The only way to prove it is not Real is to walk right through it using the above method. (See: levels, miracles, fear. ego) (For more on ego-dismantling see: forgive)

ministers:  If we choose to be, we can become ministers of God who will help free the world of all the misery and dark delusions that confuse and clutter up the ego-minds of  the separated ones on this planet.

There are, however, prerequisites for this appointment to be messengers who carry Truth to our brothers. We are asked, repeatedly, to be still and listen to the Truth as spoken to us by the Holy Spirit. We are asked to give to others the messages of Truth we have first received. We are asked to purify our minds of ego as we meditate so we can honor God's Sons as God does. We are asked to keep in constant touch with God in our minds all through each day, and we are asked to accept God's Will as our own because it is the only Real Will there is.

Accomplishing all this may seem like a difficult and distant goal, but fortunately we are told that, to begin this At-one-ment process, all we need is a little willingness, because willingness is a choice we make. Once we begin walking along our spiritual path hand in hand with the Holy Spirit, we can begin to help others find that path. Those others will be sent to us, or they may already be in our circle. But they must openly ask us for help if we are to give it to them explicitly, because it is not up to us to change our brother without his express request for spiritual assistance. (Refer to: T-9.III.6:4)

Nevertheless, just by our meditating in stillness and listening to the Holy Spirit a thousand minds can be opened to the Truth because they will hear the Holy Words we hear. This communication is possible because when any one of God's Sons is in quiet communion with the Holy Spirit all our Minds are joined in the Oneness of God's Mind-as-Such. (See: messengers, listen, still, pure)

minute:  Each minute, each second we choose between the ego and the Holy Spirit, between crucifixion and resurrection, between destructive guilt and the At-one-ment. What, then, do we really want—the insanity of the ego, or the Happiness of God?

The choice is always ours because our Minds are easily powerful enough to determine our behavior and experience because we have the God-given Freedom to decide what our courses of action will be, even in this world of separation.

It only takes a minute, a Holy Instant of genuine meditation, to join with God and experience His Happiness, Love and Peace. Forgiving all our brothers and relinquishing all ego-pursuits is the key but these requirements need only be accomplished during that brief Holy Instant for the Bliss to happen. (See: Holy Instant, meditation)

miracles:  In our ego state we have many misperceptions about the nature of miracles, especially the idea that miracles are mostly all about physical healings, but rather than trying to sort through these misperceptions it is simpler just to state what the course tells us the true characteristics of miracles are.

                            1.       While God, as the Giver of Life and all Power, is the ultimate Source of miracles, they are not needed in Heaven where Perfection reigns.

                            2.       Miracles are in accord with God's Will and are "lessons" in Truth, Love and Joy. They are an aspect of God's Plan for our return Home.

                            3.       The Holy Spirit is the "mechanism" through which miracles dissolve error, and we must only perform miracles with and through the Holy Spirit.

                            4.       Miracles are expressions of Love and come from Love. All expressions of Love are maximal. Note therefore that Love, not fear, generates miracles.

                            5.       The Holy Instant is the key to receiving miracles of Love through the Holy Spirit.

                            6.       The healing power of miracles transcends the body, because it is the Mind that heals the body and not vice versa.

                            7.       Miracles contract time, and in doing so release us from the past. Miracles enable us to see (relate to) others as Sons of God without their past—or ours. A healing that may haven taken years by ordinary means, may happen in an instant through a miracle.

                            8.       There is no order of difficulty in miracles, and by applying them to all situations  equally, we will gain the Real world.

                            9.       Miracles are everyone's natural everyday right, but purification is necessary first because the ego cannot engender miracles. However, we are entitled to receive miracles because of Who We Really Are.

                          10.      While miracles originate from Spiritual Sources, they occur in the realm of perception (not Knowledge) because they are only called for in a world of perception, egos and illusions. Our egos cannot understand the nature or purpose of miracles. Egos view miracles as magic, or with skepticism.

                          11.      Miracles are a choice we make when we choose healing over sickness, Life over death, forgiveness over fear, and Loving Oneness over attack and hate.

                          12.      Miracles, by correcting false thinking, restore us to Right thinking, Wholeness, Reality and Truth. Miracles release us from fear, separation and lack.

                          13.      The True goals of  miracle-workers are (a) to raise our levels of communication from ego to Spirit, (b) to create Holy Relationships here, and (c) to restore the Sonship to Complete Wholeness.

                          14.      Miracle-workers must come to realize that it is our ego's warped mis-thoughts that make miscreations such as war, disease, conflict, fear, etc. However, by guarding against these mis-thoughts, we can allow for miracles to happen—through the auspices of the Holy Spirit.

                          15.      Note well that the miracle is the means, the At-one-ment is the Principle, and healing (primarily the mind) is the result.  Therefore, ask for miracles based on the At-one-ment in order to bring about healing, which is the undoing of the ego. Accept the At-one-ment process of mind-healing and the miracles will follow.

                          16.      Forgiveness is the key to miracles—miracles of undoing all the thoughts and things the world of ego tells us cannot be undone.

                          17.      We cannot directly perform miracles for ourselves because miracles are a way of giving in order to receive, because miracles are based on Love, not selfishness. As we give miracles of forgiveness and Love, so shall we receive them.

                          18.      In this respect, through forgiveness, miracles can turn special relationships into Holy Relationships. All Holy Relationships include God.

                          19.      Miracles are Universal blessings from God through Jesus offered to all his brothers. Jesus inspires all miracles on our behalf, if we let him.

                          20.      Jesus is the only one who can perform miracles indiscriminately when and where they are needed, because he is the "embodiment" of the At-one-ment. In this respect Jesus will dictate our role to us, a role which facilitates the entire Awakening process of everyone—in accordance with God's Plan. Thus role calls for our explicit Trust in God, Jesus and Holy Spirit that They Know what They are doing!

mirror:  The course uses the analogy of a mirror for the perceptual activities in which our minds engage while we remain in a state of seeming separation from God. Perceptions can take place at three levels, the ego level, the level of right-mindedness, or the Christ/Real world level.

When our minds perceive through the distorted eyes of the ego, the world-as-a-mirror reflects back the dark contents of our egos causing us to see fearful objects, bodies, scenes, people, relationships, events and predictions. Examples would be animals, diseased bodies, special love and hate relationships, wars and terrorism and doomsday predictions.

When our minds look through the eyes of right-mindedness, the world-as-a-mirror reflects back the forgiveness, kindness, beauty, safety, friendship and nurturing we freely give to others. Even battlefields and terrorism are seen as deluded games silly children play with sharp-edged toys and fearsome fire-crackers. Remember, no one dies without his own consent, and everyone is in the right place at the right time! (Refer to: W-pI.152.1:4 & W-pI.42.2:4)

When our enlightened Minds look through the eyes of our inner Christs, the world-as-a-mirror reflects back the Real World of Love, Light. Peace, Joy, Freedom and Happiness, because we see all our brothers are Christs too whatever they appear to be doing. We understand we are all Sons of God in a permanent state of Loving Oneness with God, and we Know that is the only Reality there is—despite appearances to the contrary.

When God takes the Final Step, even the perfected perception of the Christ is exchanged for the Direct Experience of God, a State of Being that cannot be described but only experienced. (See: perception, face of Christ, right-mindedness, experience)

miscreate, miscreations:  This is a key entry in the Companion because it explains what we must do to relinquish our miscreations and Wake up in God's Mind-as-such.

But what are miscreations? Our most major miscreation is our separation from God. We made this separation by usurping His Power (which He freely gave us) in order to set up our own dreamworld kingdom of miscreated make-believe. It is important to realize we still continue to miscreate this state of separation during every moment we remain asleep here in our fearful world of ego. The separation is our current denial of God's Love.

Our second major miscreation was fear, an emotion we invented to replace the Love from which we dissociated when we began dreaming. We use fear as a safety device to avoid its concomitant we call danger. We also use fear as a deterrent involving sin, guilt and punishment (see below), concepts we use to try to prop up this fear-based foundationless world.

Our third major miscreation was the artificial identity we call ego which we invented to replace the Son/Self Identity we deny, but which is still present underneath our miscreations.

Our fourth miscreation is the psychological mechanism of projection, a device we use to pretend that thoughts can leave our minds and go into other minds when we do not want to own those thoughts.

Our fifth miscreation is the emotion of aggression (also known as anger, hate and attack) which is the flip-side polarity of fear. In ego-terms the less fear we exhibit, the more aggression we wield. This aggression is the basis of the victim (fear) versus the victimizer (aggression) polarity. We are aggressive to those whom we fear least, and this accounts for the bully syndrome and pecking-order chains.

Our sixth miscreation is a combination of sin, guilt, judgment, blame and punishment, all of which are elaborations based on the fear-aggression polarity of the ego. Sin is seen as an "aggressive" act that hurts and harms, guilt is an aggressive accusation that someone has sinned (even oneself), blame is the projected aggressive accusation that someone has sinned and so we pass an aggressive judgment on the sinner which in ego-terms is an aggressive punishment that causes the sinner pain and suffering.

Our seventh miscreation is pain, which we invented to try to limit the more extreme physical and psychological outcomes of the ego's behaviors and judgments. Thus our lives are much more based on the avoidance and fear of pain than on an attraction to Peace and Love. Sickness, suffering, misery, depression, and anguish are merely aspects of pain and punishment. Note that fear, aggression and punishment would be meaningless without the existence of physical and psychological pain.

Our eighth miscreation is a combination of pleasure and distraction at the ego level.  Pleasure and distraction form a compensatory ego-polarity with pain and suffering and as such give us ego-devised satisfactions to lock onto. Of course, this does not mean the pleasures and distractions of the ego are sins. Rather they are "harmless" attention-getters that we use not only to compensate for pain but also to distract us from reunification with God.

Our ninth miscreation is the combination of physical birth and death, with our  "little life" sandwiched in between. This is probably our cleverest invention because it is the series of events or happenings in which we most firmly believe. After all, doesn't everyone get born, and doesn't everyone die? And is not "living here" what creation is all about? Is not this physical life-in-form much more real than Mind-as-such?

The extensive network of multiplying miscreations which have stemmed from these nine basic miscreations, and which continue to branch in every aspect of our lives here, are almost endless in their chaotic confusion.

Note that the quotations below do not necessarily refer some of the miscreation topics outlined above, but it is important to remember that anything that egos have made without Love (i.e., God) are technically our miscreations. (See: made, fear, attack, error, projection, ego, pain, sickness, sin)

misdirected:  Jesus tells us that, as egos separated from God and the Sonship, we are prone to several misdirected notions, all of which need correction if we are to Wake up.

As egos we are inclined to have a misdirected loyalty to the ego-body system, a loyalty that is best directed to God's reassurances that our only Reality is Spirit. We defend our loyalty to our ego-body identification by projecting our errors out onto others, a situation that can be reversed by forgiving our brothers, withdrawing the projections, and blessing them. All our "errors" are only illusions which can then be given to the Holy Spirit to dissolve. This healing process is what we do as miracle-workers.

Jesus also tells us that pleasurable physical impulses are misdirected impulses, and that we are very confused by this major perceptual distortion. While physical pleasure is, in itself, harmless and certainly not a "sin," it can distract us from doing God's Will which is the undoing of the separation so we can return Home. Physical pleasures are, in Reality, nothing. Doing God's Will is our only Real Pleasure, while not doing His Will is a denial of our Real Selves. Special relationships capitalize on physical union and physical pleasure distracting us from Real Loving Union and real Pleasure.

Likewise, any belief that what the physical eyes behold (such as seeing only physical bodies) is where the error and the healing must be, is a misdirected focus onto the physical; the only genuine healing is in our minds which is where the errors are, and it is only at the inner altar of the mind (where we communicate with the Holy Spirit) that the illusory errors (called "defilement") can be corrected and where the Real Vision of the Real Mind Self can be restored.

In the final quotation we are reminded that the traditional Christian point of view that God judged us and threw us out of the Garden of Eden as a punishment for sin is an ego belief which keeps the separation going.  God know nothing of sin, judgment, and punishment, or of sacrifice for redemption. We will think Jesus is misdirecting us (in the course) if we believe all those lies of our egos. God is only Loving and Merciful and never condemns. (See: pleasure, sin, altar, sacrifice, condemn)

misery:  Here in this world where we identify with our egos and imagine we are physical bodies we always find we are on a bipolar yo-yo which plunges us into depression and misery, or lifts us up to the temporary false heights of elation, success and special relationships. Of course, the ego promises that you can "stay up there" despite all evidence to the contrary. Sooner or later the downswing happens and the misery returns, at which point we search for the next "high," the next lover, the next addictive "hit" or perhaps the next medication to blur the underlying despair. None of these ego-boosters will work for long, and none will bring salvation.

Jesus, himself, repeatedly tells us in the course that our only salvation is through any combination of the following methods:

1.       Forgiveness: We have to forgive everyone, which means we let go of all grievances and relinquish the pain and misery that accompanies them. (See: forgive)

2.       Realize we are miserable: All to often we delude ourselves we are happy, especially when we are successful, living in abundance and have a good special relationship. Our egos are capable of endless rationalization and false "highs." Sooner or later every ego-polarity switches and misery kicks in! Heaven cannot be woven into illusions. (See: special relationships)

3.       Let go of keeping secrets from the Holy Spirit: In our insanity we believe that if no one knows our "guilty, sinful" secrets the Holy Spirit also does not know them, but this is nonsense. The Holy Spirit knows everything about us, and He also knows whatever we did to feel guilty never happened in Reality. All we have to do is open our whole mind to Real Love if we are to become enlightened and Know God. (See: secrets)

4.       Stop all ego-thinking, go into the Silence and Listen to the Holy Spirit: We have dissociated ourselves from God, Spirit, the Awake Sonship and our own Christ Selves all of which Live in our Mind-as-such. To restore our connection with Them the ego must be dismantled (See: forgive)

misguided:  The course tells us quite plainly that we are misguided about several important spiritual matters.

We are misguided about performing miracles because we think it is up to us to decide which miracles we should perform—or request God to perform on our behalf—usually over a serious crisis or illness. Yet Jesus tells us that miracles should be involuntary, and therefore we should ask him which miracles we should perform because he is the only one who can perform miracles indiscriminately on our behalf. (See: miracles)

We, who have made our egos as false personal identities, can be very misguided because our egos' decisions are in direct opposition to Spirit and God's Self. Nevertheless our egos can gradually learn (or rather, unlearn, through the contents of the course) that they are unnecessary false identities which we, as Sons of God, can happily relinquish. (See: unlearn, relinquish)

Our misguidedness as egos comes from not listening to the Holy Spirit and Jesus (who is the Holy Spirit), and so we are not so much misguided as we are ignorant of Real Guidance. However, the course is such Guidance, and we can listen to and learn from its wisdom if we wish. (See: guides, guidance)

It has taken time for us to become misguided, actually more than a million years according to the course. Time places a misguided emphasis on past and future and tends to regard the present as merely a transition phase from one to the other. However, Jesus tells us that it is only in the present Holy Instant that we can find Happiness and Peace. In the Holy Instant (the Now moment) there is no fear and we experience our Holiness as changeless because that is the way God Created us. To experience the Holy Instant Now we must regularly practice meditation morning and night, using the method described in Workbook Lesson 189, Paragraphs 7 and 8. (See: meditation, experience)

misperceive:  Because we seem to be separated from God and His Sonship, our insane egos misperceive everything we see through the body's eyes. The list of the ego's misperceptions in this world is long: sin, sickness, attack, injustices, grievances, defenses, guilt, and the ability to usurp the power of God. This last misperception is the major cause of all our fears. In the past we were all taught that "God helps those who help themselves" —which means we always try to "do something about" our egos and lives here before we ever think of consulting with God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit. However the course states we should consult with the Holy Spirit first and then follow His guidance.

Misperceptions are linked with the past, because past events in our lives distort and color the present negatively or "positively." These current misperceptions, in turn, cause us to expect a future filled with events similar to our past experiences. In this strange past-to-future process of "living" in non-existent time we entirely miss the present Holy Instant with God and never truly live in the eternal Now.

Jesus tells us that the best way to eliminate misperceptions and, indeed, our egos as well, is to follow his guidance (he is the manifestation of the Holy Spirit) all the time by asking him what we should choose and do in every moment.

Once we remember our Innocence by waking up spiritually, we will stop misperceiving and see with Spiritual Vision. Then every moment will be a peaceful Holy Instant and every person will be seen by us as a Holy Son of God. (See: perceive, vision, past)

misplaced:  In our separated state in this insane world, we have misplaced our faith by transferring it from a Faith in God to a faith in our egos and physical bodies. We have also misplaced our identity by transferring it from our Identification with the Son of God we Really Are to a false identity which is comprised of those false egos and bodies.

The tragedy is that these misplaced loyalties to egos and bodies lead to expanding outward circles of distortions and errors in our ego-ridden relationships with others—whom we tend to perceive as useful need-fulfilling resources, or as tyrants, victims and enemies. All this occurs through the outward projection of our dis-owned "sins," guilt, shame and deep fears of abandonment. These ego errors and distortions may also be misplaced into our bodies, thus causing sickness and other disorders.

We even project the ego's built-in parental authority system (taught us by our parents, teachers and churches) onto God and so perceive Him as the punishing, threatening parental "father" who may cast us "sinners" into "hell." Of course, this whole crazy scenario is illusion, but how do we let it go?

The At-one-ment process undoes all errors, false beliefs, and misplaced identities. The course presents us with numerous At-one-ment healing techniques, the main one of which is forgiveness—forgiveness of ourselves as well as others. Other valuable techniques are endeavoring to access the Present Holy Instant Now, meditation, ego-dismantling, repeating the Name of God, sorting out the Real from the unreal, listening to the inner guidance of the Holy Spirit and (in humility) identifying with the Son of God we Really Are. All these ways of healing have been given us by our Loving Creator to help us end the separation and return Home. (See: forgive, meditation, Holy Instant, sin)

missing:  Because we separated ourselves from God and substituted a dreamworld of our own making for Heaven, we perpetually feel there is some-thing missing that we lack in our lives, and even (through projection) that some-thing is missing from our bodies. We even feel we need to fill these lacks by being close to another person or persons.

Instead of reuniting with God by waking up from the dream, we confirm our continuing dream-state by searching outside ourselves for special relationships and/or running after all manner of idols—which take many forms. Yet the inner gap of yearning for God can never be filled by these illusory external forms no matter how many relationships we have, and no matter how many possessions or successes we rack up.

However, there is a sure way to wake up to full Consciousness in God, namely through forgiveness. Our self-made separation from God has spilled over into a separation from our brothers, but by ending this fragmentation through total forgiveness we remember that we Love all of them and our Selves thus restoring the Wholeness of Creation. That accomplished we discover God has given us Everything of Himself and that nothing is missing—not any our Brothers or one iota of God's gifts of Love, Light, Peace, Joy and Happiness . (See: forgiveness, separation, lack, gifts)

mission:  The course refers to (a) the ego's mission, (b) Jesus joint mission with us, (c) our specific missions, (d) the mission of teachers of God and (e) the Holy Spirit's mission.

Because each of these various missions is clearly explained in the introductory sentences to each quotation below there is no need to elaborate further here. Suffice it to say that it is our mission to accept the At-one-ment process for ourselves, and by Waking up share the experience with all our brothers Lovingly. (See: Atonement, experience, teacher of God)

The ego's false mission is always to point us back in the direction of the past: You can not go back. And everything that points the way in the direction of the past but sets you on a mission [by the ego] whose accomplishment can only be unreal. (T-26.V.9:4-5)

Jesus' mission was simply to unite the will of the Sonship with the Will of the Father: My [Jesus] mission was simply to unite the will of the Sonship with the Will of the Father by being aware of the Father’s Will myself. This is the awareness I came to give you, and your problem in accepting it is the problem of this world. Dispelling it is salvation, and in this sense I am the salvation of the world. (T-8.IV.3:4-6)

Our joint mission with Jesus is to escape from crucifixion, not from redemption, so we can trust in Jesus' help: I [Jesus] will awaken you as surely as I awakened myself, for I awoke for you. In my resurrection is your release. Our mission is to escape from crucifixion, not from redemption. Trust in my help, for I did not walk alone, and I will walk with you as our Father walked with me. Do you not know that I walked with Him in peace? And does not that mean that peace goes with us on the journey? (T-12.II.7:2-7)

We will not fail in our mission: You will not fail in your mission because I did not fail in mine. Give me but a little trust in the name of the complete trust I have in you, and we will easily accomplish the goal of perfection together. (T-12.II.8:4-5)

Our mission is simply to live so we demonstrate we are not egos: My [Jesus] trust in you is greater than yours in me at the moment, but it will not always be that way. Your mission is very simple. You are asked to live so as to demonstrate that you are not an ego, and I do not choose God’s channels wrongly. (T-4.VI.6:1-3)

We need to accept our mission of extending Peace because this is God's Will: For we are there in the peace of the Father, Who wills to extend His peace through you. When you have accepted your mission to extend peace you will find peace, for by making it manifest you will see it. Its holy witnesses will surround you because you called upon them, and they will come to you. (T-12.VII.10:6) & (T-12.VII.11:1-2)

Our mission is: I will accept Atonement for myself: We start with this review of what our mission is: I will accept Atonement for myself, For I remain as God created me. We have not lost the knowledge that God gave to us when He created us like Him. We can remember it for everyone, for in creation are all minds as one. (W-pI.139.11:2-5)

It is our mission now to share God's Gifts and Joy with everyone in the world: God has entrusted all His gifts to you. Be witness in your happiness to how transformed the mind becomes which chooses to accept His gifts, and feel the touch of Christ. Such is your mission now. For God entrusts the giving of His gifts to all who have received them. He has shared His joy with you. And now you go to share it with the world. (W-pI.166.15:3-8)

It is the mission of teachers of God to become Perfect here and to teach Perfection until they have learned it: This is a manual for the teachers of God. They are not perfect, or they would not be here. Yet it is their mission to become perfect here, and so they teach perfection over and over, in many, many ways, until they have learned it. And then they are seen no more, although their thoughts remain a source of strength and truth forever. (M-IN.5:4-7)

The mission of the Holy Spirit is to guide us Home: Yet the Holy Spirit remembers it for you, and He will guide you to your [Real] home because that is His mission. As He fulfills His mission He will teach you yours, for your mission is the same as His. By guiding your brothers home you are but following Him. Behold the Guide your Father gave you, that you might learn you have eternal life. (T-12.IV.5:5-7) & (T-12.IV.6:1)

The Holy Spirit needs a happy learner: The Holy Spirit needs a happy learner, in whom His mission can be happily accomplished. You who are steadfastly devoted to misery must first recognize that you are miserable and not happy. (T-14.II.1:1-2)

Because we are asleep, the Holy Spirit's mission is to open our eyes to Christ's Vision: Correction is for all who cannot see. To open the eyes of the blind is the Holy Spirit’s mission, for He knows that they have not lost their vision, but merely sleep. He would awaken them from the sleep of forgetting to the remembering of God. Christ’s eyes are open, and He will look upon whatever you see with love if you accept His vision as yours. The Holy Spirit keeps the vision of Christ for every Son of God who sleeps. (T-12.VI.4:1-5)

The Holy Spirit has already undone everything unworthy of the Son of God, for such was His mission: The Holy Spirit stands at the end of time, where you must be because He is with you. He has already undone everything unworthy of the Son of God, for such was His mission, given Him by God. And what God gives has always been. (T-13.I.4:4-6)

God gave the Holy Spirit the mission to remove all doubt and every trace of guilt that His dear Son has laid upon himself, and God's Will is done: You whose mind is darkened by doubt and guilt, remember this: God gave the Holy Spirit to you, and gave Him the mission to remove all doubt and every trace of guilt that His dear Son has laid upon himself. It is impossible that this mission fail. Nothing can prevent what God would have accomplished from accomplishment. Whatever your reactions to the Holy Spirit’s Voice may be, whatever voice you choose to listen to, whatever strange thoughts may occur to you, God’s Will is done. You will find the peace in which He has established you, because He does not change His Mind. (T-13.XI.5:1-5)

mistake:  As egos who are separated from God we make many mistakes, and these are listed below. However all our mistakes are correctable. Once corrected they vanish from our minds forever so that we can return Home as the perfect Beings that God created us to be and intends us to be. There is a lot of help available to us whenever we wish to eradicate our mistakes and dismantle our egos.

Our mistakes are errors of anger, attack and lack of love—all of which are reversible through forgiveness.  (See: T-PRE.6:5-6)

It is our mistake to believe we understand what we (as egos) perceive; not one thought we hold is wholly True.  (See: T-11.VIII.2:3-5) & (T-11.VIII.3:1-3)

We separated ones fear redemption (Waking up) and think it will kill us.  (See:T-13.II.8:4-6) & (T-13.II.9:1)

The Son of God can be mistaken but he cannot "sin" because he cannot change his Reality in any way.  (See: T-19.II.3:1-5)

The ego would preserve all errors and make them uncorrectable "sins."  (See: T-22.III.4:1-6)

Sin (as a lack of love) is only a mistake to be corrected, not an evil to be punished.  (See: T-PRE.7:all)

We have not sinned, we have only been much mistaken, and this can be corrected.  (See: T-10.V.6:1-3)

"Sin" is kept in place by giving it the status of "truth" but all mistakes can be brought to Truth to be corrected and undone.  (See: T-19.II.6:5-13)

We can voluntarily change the status of a repetitive "sin" (such as guilt and anger) to a mistake so it can stop, and we can let it go.  (See: T-19.III.3:3-5)

It is a mistake to think the crucifixion established the At-one-ment; the resurrection did. (See: T-3.I.1:2-6)

The ego makes the mistake of looking for the Holy Spirit only inside itself.  (See: T-5.III.4:6-7)

It is a mistake to believe that a thought system based on lies is weak.  (See:  T-3.VII.1:6-8) & (T-3.VII.2:1)

The ego believes it is far better to be sinful than mistaken.  (See: T-19.II.8:3-5)

Do not have faith in the physical body and ego to give what they cannot give; it is a mistaken identification with the pleasure/pain polarity which will fail you.  (See: T-19.IV.B.11:4-9) & (T-19.IV.B.12:1-5)

Do not mistake truce for Peace or compromise for escape from conflict, because these ploys are of the ego.  (See: T-23.III.6:1-2)

The ego focuses on error and interprets mistakes (its own and the mistakes of others) as real and true—thus making Truth meaningless.  (See:T-11.V.14:all)

Do not refuse a brother's request to do something harmless that you do not want to do; and walk the second mile.  (See: T-12.III.2:1-4)

All we have ever done in our dreams of separation from God is to be mistaken, and all these mistakes can be corrected with God's help.  (See: T-10.V.6:1-3)

All mistakes must be corrected at the ego-mind level because only the ego-mind is capable of error—not the body or Right-Mind; miracles correct this level-confusion.   (See: T-2.IV.2:2-4)

The body's eyes (in the service of the ego) see only form and by not seeing beyond forms (such as incoming attack) see only illusions such as massive "sins" everywhere. But when we "see through" form to mistakes, form cannot prevent correction.  (See: T-22.III.5:1-6)

Let not the form of his mistakes keep you from him whose holiness is yours.  (See: T-22.III.8:1-3)

In order to Wake up, only one change of perception is necessary; we must come to understand that what is not Love (all forms of fear) are one false idea which we can let go all at once.  (See:T-15.X.4:all) & (T-15.X.5:1-3)

By releasing our brother from our mutual belief in "sin," and by seeing "sins" as correctable errors, we will both be healed in a Holy Instant.  (See:T-19.III.9:all) & (T-19.III.10:1)

Salvation lies in being responsible for what we see and choose, but once we freely acknowledge we have been mistaken and choose Love, the Way Home is open.  (See: T-21.II.2:all) & (T-21.II.3:1)

Forgiveness of our own and our brothers mistakes is the Answer.  (See: T-22.VI.7:1)

Jesus has chosen us to help him with the Second Coming and this is not a mistake.  (See: T-4.IV.10:4-9)

The Holy Spirit cannot punish "sin;" mistakes He recognizes, and would correct them all as God entrusted Him to do. (See: T-19.III.4:1-7)

The Holy Spirit's goal is to help us unlearn our mistakes through forgiveness. (See: T-PRE.5:6-7)

By inviting the Holy Spirit into our relationships, we will see He does not see our mistakes at all, and so we should extend the same consideration to our brothers.  (See: T-17.V.11:1-8)

money:  The ego does not understand that money is only "solidified Love" the purpose of which is to make sure everyone's simple essential physical needs are wisely met. This is not to imply that money is the only "cure" for poverty, and this is not to imply that by throwing money at a human problem it will be solved. Education, loving care, vocational training, psycho-spiritual therapy as well as a host of other healing activities can be supported by charitable donations. Much Love can be expressed through giving money, and it need not always be in the form of direct gifts. The next time you pay at the checkout in your supermarket, realize your payment of money is helping to support the families of thousands of employees and shareholders. Also, do not judge those who cling to their money and hoard it, or you will sink into an ego-polarity of envy and greed; just remember the only value money has lies not in itself, but in the goodness it can achieve in the At-One-ment process of helping all people Wake Up to Loving Oneness

Your faith is placed in the most trivial and insane symbols; pills, money, "protective" clothing, influence, prestige, being liked, knowing the "right" people, and an endless list of forms of nothingness that you endow with magical powers.  (W-#79/79-pI.50.1:3)

Power, fame, money, physical pleasure; who is the "hero" to whom all these things belong? [The ego.] (M-#32/33-13.2:6)

Should he need money it will be given him, not in payment, but to help him better serve the plan [of God].  (P-#21/43-3.III.1:4)

It has well been said that to him who hath shall be given. Because he has, he can give. And because he gives, he shall be given. This is the law of God, and not of the world. So it is with God's healers. They give because they have heard His Word and understood it. All that they need will thus be given them. (P-#22/45-3.III.5:1-7)

moods:  Human moods, from the deepest despair to the highest elation, and all the shades of variegated emotions in between (including pseudo-love) are of the ego and are not Real. There is only God's Reality Which, being wholly Loving, engenders only changeless, permanent Joy in our Minds. To experience this state of Real Joy we must reject and dismantle everything that our egos espouse, and be willing to allow the Holy Spirit (Who is our Right Minds) to replace those egos completely.

Our very being seems to change as we experience a thousand shifts in mood, and our emotions raise us high indeed, or dash us to the ground in hopelessness.  (W-#343/352-pI.186.8:5)

When your mood tells you that you have chosen wrongly, and this is so whenever you are not joyous, then know this need not be.  (T-#57/63-4.IV.2:2)

Different realities are meaningless, for reality must be one. It cannot change with time or mood or chance. Its changelessness is what makes it real. This cannot be undone. Undoing is for unreality. And this reality will do for you.  (T-#270/291-14.IX.2:6-11)

Remember, however, that what the Holy Spirit rejects the ego accepts. This is because they are in fundamental disagreement about everything, being in fundamental disagreement about what you are. The ego's beliefs on this crucial issue vary, and that is why it promotes different moods. The Holy Spirit never varies on this point, and so the one mood He engenders is joy. He protects it by rejecting everything that does not foster joy, and so He alone can keep you wholly joyous.  (T-#100/108-6.V.C.1:7-11)

morals, morality:  These words do not occur anywhere in any of the ACIM books, including the Urtext, HLC, First and Second editions and for a very good reason: morality and moral codes are relative to the individual, group, society or culture in which they occur and therefore morals are as variable as the people who inhabit the earth. All good, bad or somewhere in-between morals and morality are products of capricious egos. It is interesting the founding fathers of the United States decided that the individual states had the right to determine most of their own moral codes and how they would be administered. You may wish to compare the laws of Massachusetts, New Jersey, Georgia, Nevada and Oregon on the way the handle some very controversial and sensitive issues. Individual nations vary even more widely on such issues, even in those countries which have democratic governments. Examine too, the history of the human race and note how laws and their punishments have changed down the ages, and continue to do so each month. (See: laws. Laws)

When you heal, you are remembering the laws of God and forgetting the laws of the ego.  (T-#109/118-7.IV.2:6)

The laws of God work only for your good, and there are no other laws beside His.  (T-#174/188-10.IV.4:4)

Salvation is a lesson in giving, as the Holy Spirit interprets it. It is the reawakening of the laws of God in minds that have established other laws, and given them power to enforce what God created not. Your insane laws were made to guarantee that you would make mistakes, and give them power over you by accepting their results as your just due. What could this be but madness?  (T-#403/432-20.IV.2:9-10) & (T-#403/432-20.IV.3:1-2)

Reality observes the laws of God, and not the rules you set.  (T-#589/634-30.IV.4:1)

motivation, motive(s):  After we chose to separate from God we left Love behind and substituted our human ego's motives and motivations most of which it projects down into the body. Our ego-motivations are all based on the emotion of fear. Our defenses against fear and our satisfying distractions from fearful events (including fantasies of such situations) preoccupy our minds minute-by-minute for centuries, until we decide to Wake up and return to the Loving Oneness of God. (See: fear)

After the Separation, needs became the most powerful source of motivation for human action.  (UT-#A51-1:1)

The body appears to be largely self-motivated and independent, yet it actually responds only to the intentions of the mind.  (T-#/xii-PRE.10:4)

Change in motivation is a change of mind, and this will inevitably produce fundamental change because the mind is fundamental.  (T-#98/106-6.V.B.2:5)

The Holy Spirit does not need your help in interpreting motivation, but you do need His.  (T-#201/216-12.I.5:8)

Would you not be willing to relinquish your grievances if you believed all this were so? Perhaps you do not think you can let your grievances go. That, however, is simply a matter of motivation. Today we will try to find out how you would feel without them. If you succeed even by ever so little, there will never be a problem in motivation ever again.  (W-#114/115-pI.68.4:all)

murder, murderers:  The Course does not shy away from these terms, and indeed uses one or the other over fifty times. In our separation from God and His Love we have made an ego-world riddled with fear, attack, destruction and death. In our present state of ego-mindedness we all eventually kill our own bodies by dying, and not infrequently (directly or indirectly) the bodies of others. We cause all illness in both ourselves and others. Every bit of anger is an attack that "crucifies" a body -- our own or others. All illness is anger and fear dropped into the body. Most humans believe in defense and almost all countries have armed services who have no other purpose than to murder the enemy. Some murder their murderers!

Thus everyone who experiences any form of fear or anger is a murderer because attack is the flip side of fear. What is not Love is murder, and the realization that the murderer is inside every one of us is a tremendous step forward in the process of Waking up. We can only eradicate what is inside our minds and so only we can dissolve our inner angry murderer and replace it with our inner Loving Oneness after we accept the fact we are the murderer.

Do you like what you have made?--a world of murder and attack, through which you thread your timid way through constant dangers, alone and frightened, hoping at most that death will wait a little longer before it overtakes you and you disappear.  (T-#400/429-20.III.4:2)

You are not asked to fight against your wish to murder. But you are asked to realize the form it takes conceals the same intent. And it is this you fear, and not the form. What is not love is murder. What is not loving must be an attack.  (T-#461/496-23.IV.1:7-11)

A brother separated from yourself, an ancient enemy, a murderer who stalks you in the night and plots your death, yet plans that it be lingering and slow; of this you dream. Yet underneath this dream is yet another, in which you become the murderer, the secret enemy, the scavenger and the destroyer of your brother and the world alike. Here is the cause of suffering, the space between your little dreams and your reality. The little gap you do not even see, the birthplace of illusions and of fear, the time of terror and of ancient hate, the instant of disaster, all are here. Here is the cause of unreality. And it is here that it will be undone. You are the dreamer of the world of dreams. No other cause it has, nor ever will. Nothing more fearful than an idle dream has terrified God's Son, and made him think that he has lost his innocence, denied his Father, and made war upon himself.  (T-#542/584-27.VII.12:all) & (T-#542/584-27.VII.13:1-3)

There is an instant in which terror seems to grip your mind so wholly that escape appears quite hopeless. When you realize, once and for all, that it is you [as ego], you fear, the mind perceives itself as split.  (W-#365/375-pI.196.10:1-2)

Now, for an instant, is a murderer perceived within you, eager for your death, intent on plotting punishment for you until the time when it can kill at last. Yet in this instant is the time as well in which salvation comes. For fear of God has disappeared. And you can call on Him to save you from illusions by His Love, calling Him Father and yourself His Son.  (W-#365/375-pI.196.11:1-4)

my (See: I)

mystery, mysteries:  In ACIM all mysteries are considered to be of the ego. The reason is that the ego must preserve itself as a fictitious complex of false identities, and anything that is Real must be either denied, or relegated to the nebulous realm of mysteries. All unawakened humans engage in a wide range of denials of the Real, or assign any curiosity about Reality to the ego's inactive folder-file entitled, "Mysteries." However ACIM states quite clearly that, "All knowledge must be yours, for in you is all knowledge.  (T-#240/258-13.VIII.2:4)  In other words, within the Reality of our God-created Minds, there are NO veils or mysteries whatsoever, therefore let us all Wake up to the complete Knowledge which is inside our Minds right Now. Just ask and receive – revelation.

The ego's plan is to have you see error clearly first, and then overlook it. Yet how can you overlook what you have made "real?" By seeing it clearly, you have made it "real" and cannot overlook it. This is where the ego is forced to appeal to "mysteries," insisting that you must accept the meaningless [ego's fear/attack-based plan for salvation] to save yourself.  (T-#157/169-9.IV.4:4-7)

The ego therefore opposes all appreciation, all recognition, all sane perception and all knowledge.  (T-#115/124-7.VI.5:1)

Healing is not mysterious.  (T-#160/172-9.V.6:4)

Love has no darkened temples [i.e., physical bodies] where mysteries are kept obscure and hidden from the sun.  (T-#407/436-20.VI.4:1)

The body is an isolated speck of darkness; a hidden secret room, a tiny spot of senseless mystery, a meaningless enclosure carefully protected, yet hiding nothing.  (T-#407/437-20.VI.5:2)

Even the idols that are worshipped here [in, and as, a body] are shrouded in mystery, and kept apart from those who worship them.  (T-#407/437-20.VI.6:4)

Here [in a body seen as only physical] is the "mystery" of separation [from God and one another] perceived in awe and held in reverence.  (T-#407/437-20.VI.6:6)

myths:  The Text quotations below contain all the information that the Course has on myths, which are entirely "created" by the ego to serve its own continued existence as a false identity. This fictional ego resorts to making up (among other falsehoods) both myths and magic in its endless struggle to preserve itself from its own fearful and angry projections onto a perceived hostile world that appears to attack it and undermine its security and stability. But, "There is nothing outside you." (T-#358/384-18.VI.1:1), so this split, this fantasy of there being an inside us and an outside of us, is itself a myth that we, as egos, believe, in order to preserve our separated, independent, egoic autonomy. Only by dismantling and eradicating all egos and their myths can we return to our Unified Reality with God, all His Mind-as-such Beings and His Creation.

The ego is the mind's belief that it is completely on its own. The ego's ceaseless attempts to gain the spirit's acknowledgment and thus establish its own existence are useless. Spirit in its knowledge is unaware of the ego. It does not attack it; it merely cannot conceive of it at all. While the ego is equally unaware of spirit, it does perceive itself as being rejected by something greater than itself. This is why self-esteem in ego terms must be delusional. The creations of God do not create myths, although creative effort can be turned to mythology. It can do so, however, only under one condition; what it makes is then no longer creative. Myths are entirely perceptual, and so ambiguous in form and characteristically good-and-evil in nature that the most benevolent of them is not without fearful connotations. Myths and magic are closely associated, since myths are usually related to ego origins, and magic to the powers the ego ascribes to itself. Mythological systems generally include some account of "the creation," and associate this with its particular form of magic. The so-called "battle for survival" is only the ego's struggle to preserve itself, and its interpretation of its own beginning. This beginning is usually associated with physical birth, because it is hard to maintain that the ego existed before that point in time. The more "religiously" ego-oriented may believe that the soul existed before, and will continue to exist after a temporary lapse into ego life. Some even believe that the soul will be punished for this lapse. However, salvation does not apply to spirit, which is not in danger and does not need to be salvaged.  (T-#53/58-4.II.8:4-12) & (T-#53/59-4.II.9:all)

Name of God: Just repeating the Name of God unceasingly can be a very powerful aid to Waking up. In the ACIM Workbook the whole of Lesson 183 is dedicated to spending an entire day to doing little else other than repeating God's Name very sincerely non-stop. We do not have to use the actual word "God" if that is awkward for us; we can say "Father" as does Jesus. We may wish to use a variety of God's names at random, such as God, Father, Creator, Oneness, Almighty, One Mind. Do not rattle them off meaninglessly. Rather say them (or it) carefully and meaningfully, preferably on a day devoted to this meditative task.

The Name of God's Son is one, and you are enjoined to do the works of love because we share this oneness. (T-#147/159-8.IX.7:3)

In the Name of God, be wholly willing to abandon all illusions. (T-#315/339-16.IV.9:5)

God's Name is holy, but no holier than yours. (W-#334/342-pI.183.1:1)

Practice but this today; repeat God's Name slowly again and still again. (W-#334/343-pI.183.6:1)

Repeat God's Name, and all the world responds by laying down illusions. (W-#334/342-pI.183.3:1)

Repeat His Name, and see how easily you will forget the names of all the gods you valued. (W-#334/342-pI.183.4:3)

Repeat the Name of God, and call upon your Self, Whose Name is His. (W-#334/342-pI.183.5:1)

Repeat God's Name, and you acknowledge Him as sole Creator of reality. (W-#335/343-pI.183.8:1)

Words [of a conversational nature] are insignificant, and all requests unneeded when God's Son calls on his Father's Name. (W-#335/343-pI.183.10:3)

name: We are all Sons of God along with Jesus, and therefore the name of each and every Being in the Universe of Universes is the Christ. This Fact has traditionally been denied by most churches, but Jesus and all the Masters, including the Universal Awakened Brotherhood, confirm it. Actually, the Christ is still hidden inside us right NOW -- even while we seem to be full of egos, and identified with our material bodies.

Let us ask the Father in my name to keep you mindful of His Love for you and yours for Him. (T-#55/61-4.III.6:3)

You and your brother will yet come together in my name, and your sanity will be restored. (T-#59/65-4.IV.11:6)

This is not my name alone, for ours is a shared identification. (T-#147/159-8.IX.7:2)

The Name of God's Son is one, and you are enjoined to do the works of love because we share this oneness. (T-#147/159-8.IX.7:3)

When God has taken the last step Himself, the Holy Spirit will gather all the thanks and gratitude that you have offered Him, and lay them gently before His Creator in the name of His most holy Son. And the Father will accept them in His Name. (T-#379/407-19.IV.3:9) (T-#379/407-19.IV.3:8)

needs: The following ACIM quotation puts our ego's wants and needs into a true perspective. We human egos are very needy. Why? Because we have separated ourselves from God's Love, Light, Joy, Happiness and Freedom which, in Reality we have in unlimited Abundance. Therefore our True Selves, as Created by God, have no needs and wants. Surely then, it becomes obvious that the Answer is to rediscover that True God-Self within our Minds, instead of pursuing this constant preoccupation with satisfying all our silly little ego-needs and wants in this world of artificial selfish scarcity.

Only minds can really join, and whom God has joined no man can put asunder (Text, page 356). It is, however, only at the level of Christ Mind that true union is possible, and has, in fact, never been lost. The "little I" seeks to enhance itself by [many needs including] external approval, external possessions and external "love." The Self That God created needs nothing. It is forever complete, safe, loved and loving. It seeks to share rather than to get; to extend rather than project. It has no needs and wants to join with others out of their mutual awareness of abundance.

The special relationships of the world are destructive, selfish and childishly egocentric. Yet, if given to the Holy Spirit, these relationships can become the holiest things on earth--the miracles that point the way to the return to Heaven. The world uses its special relationships as a final weapon of exclusion and a demonstration of separateness. The Holy Spirit transforms them into perfect lessons in forgiveness and in awakening from the dream. Each one is an opportunity to let perceptions be healed and errors corrected. Each one is another chance to forgive oneself by forgiving the other. And each one becomes still another invitation to the Holy Spirit and to the remembrance of God.

Perception is a function of the body, and therefore represents a limit on awareness. Perception sees through the body's eyes and hears through the body's ears. It evokes the limited responses which the body makes. The body appears to be largely self-motivated and independent, yet it actually responds only to the intentions of the mind.  (T-#/xii-PRE.8:all) & (T-#/xii-PRE.9:all) & (T-#/xii-PRE.10:1-4)

neutral: The Course emphatically states that while our bodies are a neutral end-result or effect, our Minds and their thoughts are very powerful even while we are in a state of separation. Consequently, especially while we identify with our egos, our thoughts are never neutral; they are always full of non-neutral emotions, feelings, needs, desires as well as all kinds of judgments, biases, and prejudices.

You see no neutral things because you have no neutral thoughts. (W-#28/28-pI.17.1:2)

Neutral thoughts are impossible because all thoughts have power. (W-#87/88-pI.rI.54.1:2)

My body is a wholly neutral thing. (W-#435/445-pII.294.Heading)

And yet [the body as] a neutral thing does not see death, for thoughts of fear are not invested there, nor is a mockery of love bestowed upon it. (W-#435/445-pII.294.1:5)

never: Although there is a popular saying, "Never say never," the Course uses the word over 500 times. Below is a selection of key quotations, each prefaced with the topic discussed.

Union: It is, however, only at the level of Christ Mind that true union is possible, and has, in fact, never been lost. (T-#/xii-PRE.8:2)

Holiness: Holiness can never be really hidden in darkness, but you can deceive yourself about it. (T-#8/11-1.IV.2:1)

Separation: This sense of separation would never have arisen if you had not distorted your perception of truth, and had thus perceived yourself as lacking. (T-#11/14-1.VI.2:2)

Mind: The mind is very powerful, and never loses its creative force. (T-#27/31-2.VI.9:5)

Misperceptions: You can never make your misperceptions true, and your creation is beyond your own error. (T-#37/42-3.IV.3:10)

Ego/Spirit: Your ego is never at stake because God did not create it. (T-#49/54-4.I.7:8)  Your spirit is never at stake because He did. (T-#49/54-4.I.7:9)

Jesus: I will never leave you or forsake you, because to forsake you would be to forsake myself and God Who created me. (T-#76/82-5.IV.6:5)

Function: You will never rest until you know your function [of Loving God and all His Creation] and fulfill it, for only in this can your will and your Father's be wholly joined. (T-#183/198-11.II.6:1)

New Testament: There is only one mention of the New Testament (of the Bible) in ACIM, but it is so informative, revealing and powerful that I have decided to include it here. Note that in it Jesus confirms (by implication) that he is both the author of ACIM and that he is the original Jesus of the new Testament.

These are some of the examples of upside-down thinking in the New Testament, although its gospel is really only the message of love. If the Apostles had not felt guilty, they never could have quoted me as saying, "I come not to bring peace but a sword." This is clearly the opposite of everything I taught. Nor could they have described my reactions to Judas as they did, if they had really understood me. I could not have said, "Betrayest thou the Son of Man with a kiss?" unless I believed in betrayal. The whole message of the crucifixion was simply that I did not. The "punishment" I was said to have called forth upon Judas was a similar mistake. Judas was my brother and a Son of God, as much a part of the Sonship as myself. Was it likely that I would condemn him when I was ready to demonstrate that condemnation is impossible?

As you read the teachings of the Apostles, remember that I told them myself that there was much they would understand later, because they were not wholly ready to follow me at the time. The crucifixion was the result of clearly opposed thought systems; the perfect symbol of the "conflict" between the ego and the Son of God. This conflict seems just as real now, and its lessons must be learned now as well as then.

(T-#87/95-6.I.15:all) & (T-#87/95-6.I.16:all)

nightmares: The Course refers to all the nasty and terrible events that occur in our daily human lives as nightmares. This would include diseases, deaths, disasters, wars, and, as Hamlet said, "...a thousand other shocks that flesh is heir to." In the first quotation below, Adam is the symbolic human who represents all of us ego-ridden humans who have fallen into a continuing state of unawareness of both God and our True Selves. In other words, we all need to Wake up. Note that it is a fruitless idea to hide or deny our nightmares by pretending they do not exist; on the contrary, we need to own them without projection, and then dismantle them by giving them to the Holy Spirit to vaporize so he can replace them with His Spiritual Vision of Reality. (See: the Ego-Dismantling Method - G4)

Only after the deep sleep fell upon Adam could he experience nightmares. (T-#15/18-2.I.4:5)

The ego would preserve your nightmares, and prevent you from awakening and understanding they are past. (T-#229/246-13.IV.6:6)

You are hiding your nightmares in the darkness of your own false certainty, and refusing to open your eyes and look at them. (T-#203/218-12.II.4:7)

Your wildest misperceptions, your weird imaginings, your blackest nightmares all mean nothing. (T-#249/268-13.XI.7:2)

Your first exchange of what you made for what you want is the exchange of nightmares for the happy dreams of love. (T-#238/255-13.VII.9:2)

Vision is the means by which the Holy Spirit translates your nightmares into happy dreams; your wild hallucinations that show you all the fearful outcomes of imagined sin into the calm and reassuring sights with which He would replace them. (T-#414/444-20.VIII.10:4)

no one: This is a frequent phrase in the Course presumably because it admits of no human exceptions, either in terms of inclusion, or (in some of the sentences) of exclusion. Here are some key sample quotations each of which is introduced with an explanatory caption. They are organized to run from extreme ego at the top down to remembering God at the bottom. To genuinely look at all your illusions utilize the Ego-dismantling Method (G4).

Our fearful egos have made us into animated zombies: No one who lives in fear is really alive. (T-#30*31/35-2.VIII.5:4)

Imprisonment by ego: There is no one who does not feel that he is imprisoned in some way. (T-#44/49-3.VI.11:1)

Look at all illusions: No one can escape from illusions unless he looks at them, for not looking is the way they are protected. (T-#188/202-11.V.1:1)

Making guilty destroys our Freedom: Holding no one prisoner to guilt, we become free. (T-#/xiii-PRE.14:4)

There is no sin, only correctable errors: No one is punished for sins, and the Sons of God are not sinners. (T-#87/95-6.I.16:4)

Suffering is not of God; it is of the ego: God wills no one suffer. (T-#133/143-8.III.7:5)

We cannot ever forget God: Because of your Father's Love you can never forget Him, for no one can forget what God Himself placed in his memory. (T-#218/234-12.VIII.4:1)

Forgiveness is the key to remembering God: No one who learns to forgive can fail to remember God. (P-#5/12-2.II.3:1)

nostalgia: Nostalgia is an emotional attachment to feelings and events in the past, rather than living in the present moment, Now. Note that it is only right Now that God is not only available but also insisting on our being Awake.

So I encourage you to stand by that which holds the promise of your release from [the ego's] dreams and ignorance. And to be very frank with you, if you ...indulge in a little nostalgia, even a little melancholy...it is really not being present with, and available to, the Now [the Holy Instant] in which God is insisting on your being Awake.  (Raj Excerpt, Princeville, Hawaii--February 1994--G-1994A/R-248)

nothing:  This word is one of the most important and powerful in ACIM, where it is used over 1000 times. The reason is that nothing our egos have made, especially all its false ideas, emotions, needs and motives, do not exist in Reality. (See also: everything)

Any wish that stems from the ego is a wish for nothing, and to ask for it is not a [Real] request. (T-#151/162-9.I.10:2)

Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God. (T-#0/2-IN.2:2-4)

The Self That God created needs nothing. (T-#/xii-PRE.8:4)

It is only my [Jesus] devotion that entitles me to yours. There is nothing about me that you cannot attain. I have nothing that does not come from God. The difference between us now is that I have nothing else. This leaves me in a state [of being fully Awake in the Father] which is only potential in you.  (T-#5/7-1.II.3:9-13)

When you have become willing to hide nothing, you will not only be willing to enter into communion but will also understand peace and joy. (T-#8/11-1.IV.1:5)

Remember that you are deprived of nothing except by your own decisions, and then decide otherwise. (T-#57/63-4.IV.3:3)

Of yourself you can do nothing, because of yourself you are nothing. (T-#135/145-8.IV.7:3)  Rejoice, then, that of yourself you can do nothing. (T-#141/151-8.VII.6:1)

Nothing will change unless it is understood, since light is understanding. (T-#160/172-9.V.6:5)

God created nothing beside you [as His Son] and nothing beside you exists, for you are part of Him. (T-#168/181-10.IN.2:1)

When peace comes at last to those who wrestle with temptation and fight against the giving in to sin; when the light comes at last into the mind given to contemplation; or when the goal is finally achieved by anyone, it always comes with just one happy realization; "I need do nothing." (T-#363/389-18.VII.5:7)

nothingness: Nothingness is what the ego is all about, and what the ego is very busy with on a non-stop basis. The ego itself is also nothing because it was never created by God or our Selves. The ego is no more than a silly, fictional fabrication we have artificially constructed, as a substitute for our Real Selves, so that we can continue to indulge blindly in our imagined separation from God.

Your faith is placed in the most trivial and insane symbols; pills, money, "protective" clothing, influence, prestige, being liked, knowing the "right" people, and an endless list of forms of nothingness that you endow with magical powers. (W-#79/79-pI.50.1:3)

God is not at war with the god of sickness you made, but you are. He [the god of sickness] is the symbol of deciding against God, and you are afraid of him because he cannot be reconciled with God's Will. If you attack him [the god of sickness], you will make him real to you. But if you refuse to worship him in whatever form he may appear to you, and wherever you think you see him, he [the god of sickness] will disappear into the nothingness out of which he was made.  (T-#173/187-10.IV.1:6-9)

O my child, if you knew what God wills for you, your joy would be complete! And what He wills has happened, for it was always true. When the light comes and you have said, "God's Will is mine," you will see such beauty that you will know it is not of you. Out of your joy you will create beauty in His Name, for your joy could no more be contained than his. The bleak little world will vanish into nothingness, and your heart will be so filled with joy that it will leap into Heaven, and into the Presence of God. I cannot tell you what this will be like, for your heart is not ready. Yet I can tell you, and remind you often, that what God wills for Himself He wills for you, and what He wills for you is yours.  (T-#184/199-11.III.3:all)

now: Now is the only time there is because the past no longer exists, and the future has not arrived yet. Our egos even use the present moment, now, to perceive people and the environment as being contaminated with all the insanities learned by the ego in the past. As egos we also expect our futures to be like the past, and so we see our past experiences, our present moments, and our anticipated futures in very clouded and distorted ways.  Note that the Holy Instant occurs Now when we experience God and our Real Self during meditation or in some other moment of Enlightenment. (See: Holy Instant, time)

The only aspect of time that is eternal is now. (T-#73/79-5.III.6:5)

His [the Holy Spirit's] emphasis is therefore on the only aspect of time that can extend to the infinite, for now is the closest approximation of eternity that this world [of ego] offers. (T-#229/246-13.IV.7:5)

The present now remains the only time. (W-#236/242-pI.132.3:1)

The song of our rejoicing is the call to all the world that freedom is returned, that time is almost over, and God's Son has but an instant more to wait until his Father is remembered, dreams are done, eternity has shined away the world, and only Heaven now exists at all. (W-#397/407-pII.2.5:2)

The only interval in which I can be saved from time is now. (W-#443/453-pII.308.1:4)
